The River House, located 30 miles northeast of Joseph, OR, is a charming, and spacious three bedroom home perched on the banks of the wild and scenic Imnaha River. Enjoy fishing, swimming or relaxing under the grape arbor in a cotton hammock.

The space

Located on the banks of the wild and scenic Imnaha River, the River House is peaceful, and private (three miles to the township of Imnaha-population 30, and one mile to the closest neighbor). Enjoy fishing from the front lawn, picking ripe tomatoes from the garden, and fruit from the orchard. Relax in the hammock. Our comfortable home is furnished to reflect our western heritage. Bedrooms are outfitted with queen beds and down comforters and we are limited to six quests.

Guest access

The River House lies in the heart of the Nez Perce homeland surrounded by National Forest. On one side, Hell's Canyon (the deepest gorge in North America), and on the other, the Wallowa Valley and the Eagle Cap Wilderness.

Interaction with guests

We try to meet with guests when they first arrive but our home is thirty miles away so contact is minimal. Be aware that the GPS device on your phone will take you on a round-a-bout, back-road route to our property! Don't trust it! Ask for directions once you book, please!

Other things to note

Don't get locked out! As soon as you arrive and unlock the front door, reach around and manually twist the deadbolt open.
The nearest hospital is forty minutes away. Swim at your own risk. Please bring a flashlight, or better yet, a headlamp!
There is no internet or cell service in the canyon but there is a land-line providing local service. Please bring a phone card if you plan to call long-distance.
The grill is a briquette barbecue. Please bring your own briquettes and lighter fluid.
During winter months the home is heated with a free-standing propane stove, and also, a wood-burning stove. Some experience with wood is recommended.

This is a magical place: exceptionally peaceful, beautiful and comfortable. It's wonderful to unplug (no cell service! no internet!). In the heat of the summer, it's shady and inviting. A perfect base for exploring the splendors of the area (which are many!), but also perfect for just letting time stretch out to the sound of the river. Pamela was very helpful and communicative, and her loving attention to detail is evident throughout the house.

Experiences like this make me wish I had saved 5 star ratings for the truly amazing homes. This wasn't just a nice place to stay, it was an experience to remember. The home is perfect for your Eagle Cap / Hells Canyon launch point. It's location in the remote and beautiful Imnaha river canyon makes even a day relaxing on the porch an adventure. We caught trout right off the rock wall over the Imnaha, swam in the river, relaxed on the perfect porch. The kids loved the huge trees and swing. You should expect the challenges of being in a remote place. Groceries are limited at the nearest store, but we were able to get milk butter and beer a few minutes away. There are wild critters around, which we enjoyed but be aware. The possibility of rattle snakes exist, but we just saw deer, trout, and a gopher snake on the property. We did see a mountain lion a few miles away ( my first in years of Oregon hiking) as well as big horn sheep, turkey, grouse. Saw bear scat but no bear. FYI, the Imnaha to Snake River trail was overgrown and impassable without serious machete work. We loved the experience and will be back

The River House is a wonderful homestead in one of the most beautiful places in Oregon. The home, sauna and gardens all reflect an artist's eye and care, which make the experience feel so special. The spectacular stone walls along the Imnaha River made summer swimming and fishing easy and joyful. Big, sheltering shade trees made hot summer days feel comfortable. Highly recommended for a memorable experience.

The location on the Imnaha River is unparalleled to any place we have ever stayed. The Riverhouse is rustic-old-fashioned but very comfortable with everything one needs for a restful and peaceful retreat. Our hosts provided an ambiance in which we felt as though the place was truly "ours". It proved to be a special time of re-connection with old friends.

My wife and I absolutely loved our stay at the Imnaha River House! Here are some of the highlights: 1. It's very secluded. The nearest house is 1 mile away, so there's complete privacy. 2. The location on the river in the canyon is gorgeous. 3. The house has wonderful character. Every room is beautifully decorated in a rustic and inviting style. The owners lived there for about 15 years, and it shows in how welcoming it feels. The outside is the same - very unique and beautiful. 4. There's almost no connection to the outside world - no cell signal or internet. Just unplug from the busyness of life and read a good book by the river or campfire. 5. The kitchen. My wife loved cooking in the kitchen with the view of the river and garden. She made a rhubarb pie using a little rhubarb from the garden, which we greatly appreciated. 6. We liked the owner when we met her near Joseph. She's great. At the end of our time, we wished we could have stayed longer. It will be a treasured memory for a long time.

This is a great great place on the Imnaha. If you are called to stay here, do. You will love it. We stayed in early March and had a dusting of snow on two mornings but sun and cool walks on most other days. It's hard to describe this area justly - a very special place. Everything we needed was in the home and it was clean and cozy. We had the wood stove going and read a lot. There are great magazines and books there so for the cold days lots of gentle reading time to be had! Thank you for sharing your place!
