Description

The space

Greetings from the motor city capital of the world, and welcome to Mama’s Place! As dedicated and seasoned travelers we understand the need for a perfect “home-away-from home.” Safety, cleanliness, and comfort are our top three priorities here at Mama’s Place and we are always striving to improve your travelling experience. This century-old home is large, spacious, and cozy; the perfect setting for hosting guests. Mama’s Place offers two floors of guest access. The first floor boasts a full kitchen, dining area, and common area. The kitchen includes a microwave, stove, and refrigerator lightly stocked with breakfast fixings and snacks for the duration of your stay. Cable television is available in the common area and Blast! speed internet wifi is available throughout the house. Office space is also located on the lower level, ideal for quiet study or a place to jot down a quick note or two. The second floor has three bedrooms: two single rooms, and one double with an adjoining private sunroom. There is also a full bathroom (tub+shower) located on this floor as well. All rooms are equipped with sound docks, alarm stations, and charging ports for your convenience. Fresh linens and towels are always a mainstay here, although we also provide guests access to hair dryers, flat irons, (and ear plugs) if you need them ;-)

There is free parking on the premises but for those of you who are in need of public transit Mama’s Place is only a half block from the 25 Jefferson/610 Jefferson bus lines which run frequently and can get you downtown in no time at all. Downtown Detroit has a variety of things to offer from the university/cultural districts, entertainment/shopping districts, as well as the internationally-acclaimed Detroit Medical Center (DMC). The 9 Chalmers and the 13 Conner routes are also nearby if you are looking to explore places outside of downtown. If taking the bus isn't your thing we highly suggest you use Uber. The app is free to download on smartphones and they offer extremely reasonable prices for luxurious driving accommodations.

Jefferson Chalmers itself is working diligently to restore its main shopping district, but there are grocers and restaurants nearby. The Grosse Pointe communities are also close for those in search of upscale shopping and dining options, and the Mama’s Place staff is also available to help point you in the right direction.

Mama’s Place is a labor of love shared by a mother-daughter duo wanting to bring greater awareness and longevity to the city we have known and loved our entire lives. We both grew up in the Jefferson-Chalmers neighborhood and have experienced nothing but warm smiles, friendly people, and great memories. Given our attachment to the neighborhood we wanted to create a space that allowed us to show some fine city hospitality to weary travelers, while also allowing us to continue to strengthen revitalization efforts within the community. We are situated next door to Hope House, a wonderful non-profit, offering housing to students and occasional travelers. They host weekly events in their home for the surrounding community and would love to have you pop by for a visit. Our community is quiet, close-knit, vibrant, and will offer you a truly authentic Detroit experience. Treat yourself to a leisurely walk along our red cobbled street and enjoy the beautifully historic homes around you. There are a number of public parks along the nearby Detroit river, and the neighborhood is riddled with hidden canals and small single block islands with homes on them.

Rai, an occasional tenant here (and the daughter part of this team), is working on becoming a flight attendant, loves to dance and practice yoga, and is very involved in the revitalization efforts happening here in Detroit. She lives nearby and will meet you here to help get you checked in to Mama’s Place. We here at Mama’s Place want you to kick back and relax in this fully furnished, vintage home. We are family friendly here and hope to have you as a part of ours soon.

~Come make some memories and Enjoy Detroit!

Our hosts were very welcoming. Rai met us with the keys at check-in and Cynthia stopped over later in the day with some snacks and breakfast options for us for the following morning. A nice and unexpected touch. The home is in a great location for exploring the city. Everything was about a 15 minute drive, which was great for our trip. Close to Belle Isle, a neighborhood river-front park, and a short drive to many other neighborhoods we wanted to check out (English Market, Hamtramck, Midtown, Corktown). Would stay again :) Thank you!

We had a wonderful stay in Detroit. Cynthia and Rai were awesome. Our flight was delayed so we didn't arrive until after midnight, but they were there to meet us and make us feel welcome not only to the house but to the city. Wonderful people.

Our stay at Cynthia and Rai's house was wonderful. The house is located in the Jefferson-Chalmers neighborhood, half a block from a cool coffee shop, interesting retail, and an easy drive (5 minutes) from several grocery stores and shopping areas. Convenient to both downtown and the Pointes, the house had everything we needed. We loved sitting on the front porch and visiting with the friendly neighbors. Cynthia and Rai were wonderful hosts, and the house came equipped with all the stuff a family needs, and a generous assortment of staple groceries, coffee, and fresh fruit to see us through our two-week stay. The Airconditioner upstairs was wonderful during the second week of our stay, keeping us cool when the mercury touched 100. Our hosts had great communication, and were there in person to check us in and tell us the history of the neighborhood and the house itself. It's well worth hearing the story about the house, the community, and their family's involvement in keeping the street so vibrant. Future guests should be aware that the house is something of a work in progress, and funds from our stay and others are being funneled back into the house to continue upgrading it and assist in the ongoing restoration. It's a gorgeous property, in a gem of a neighborhood. Considering the price, getting three bedrooms and the well-equipped downstairs was great value. The internet was fast and solid, and the library full of interesting current and vintage reads. We look forward to staying here again next year when we are home on vacation. Thank you, Rai and Cynthia!

Response from Cynthia + Rai:
Thanks so much for the feedback Jay! It is sincerely appreciated. As we've shared with you previously, the house is currently undergoing renovations (which are supported by our Airbnb proceeds) and we appreciate your flexibility during your stay. We do have a maintenance service available 24/7 during guest stays that we would have sent over had we been made aware of any issues such as the ones you've mentioned PRIOR to check-out. Especially after we reached out many times to check on your travel party. We are still new at this and want all of our guests to have only the best experience when with us. We do apologize for any inconvenience you may have undergone. Please know that they have been acknowledged and will be addressed immediately. Thanks once more, and we hope to see you in our city again.
