It's a lovely, quiet, self-contained room, with kitchenette, bathroom and its own front porch. It has two king-single beds, a fridge, a microwave, a heater, a fan, a hair-dryer, a DVD player and WIFI...You wake to the sound of the river, within a stone's throw, and birdsong....

The space
Murchison is a little mountain village at the western end of the Four Rivers Plain, on the way to "everywhere..." (an hour and a half from Nelson or the West Coast, three and a half hours from Christchurch). There are eight rivers weaving through this valley among the mountains. It's one of the gateways to Kahurangi National Park. It's also the whitewater capital of New Zealand - with kayaking, whitewater rafting, bush tramps, gold-fossicking and, arguably, some of the best brown trout fishing the country has to offer...

Where you’ll be

Murchison, Tasman, New Zealand

The Front Room is walking distance to all of Murchison, and looks out on paddocks, poplars, beeches and willows leading down to the river. This little settlement is surrounded by mountains and, sometimes, mist which loops the bush-covered hills like a river ghost. In winter, we have frosts and snow - in summer, the temperature can soar above 35 under a bright, cloudless sky.
Murchison (permanent pop. 490-ish) has cafes, a museum, a kayak school, gift shop and general store, also “somebodies treasures” and a great Dust & Rust retro and vintage store located in the renovated old stables..... cafe and pub, Fresh handmade pies, sweet treats, artisan breads from the smallest bake shop around, the caravan just by the museum, Tutaki Bakery, check out the Cowshed restaurant...
white-water rafting on NZ's longest untamed river, a swing bridge (just down the road) and there's gold in them thar rivers...!

We lived and worked happily for over 20 years in the city (Auckland), and now we've chosen somewhere cleaner, quieter, more sustainable, and with a bigger sky. Murchison ticks every box. We're on 2.5 acres, drinking filtered rain-water, growing our own vegetables, splitting and stacking our own firewood - and watching the light play on the hills, the colours glow and dim, and the clouds create fantastical echoes of the mountains. This is a space to kick back and discover peace. We love it. We'd love our guests to have that feeling, too... whether on a stopover for a few days, en route, or at the end of a wild day kayaking or rafting. Of course, fishing and tramping and simply exploring deserve their own quiet finale. Wine on the porch, perhaps?
