The space

Warm tones of pine offset by vibrant Guatemalan textures and colors make the indoor space comfortable and inviting. The natural laja stone-- easy to live with, covers the floor area of the entire living space inside and the outer patio/corridor. Two separate rooms offer the option of serving as one home, or can be divided into 2 separate living spaces, each with its own entrance for friends/family who might simultaneously like to share their daily life yet maintain their privacy.

In the bedroom, a matrimonial size bed, suitable for 1 or 2 people, is a cozy nook with reading light, delicious for lounging, reading, resting, and meditating. Shutters and door open to breezes, streams of light, and beauty. There is a hanging closet for your wardrobe, and a hand-made lockable cupboard for clothing and valuables.

A second room provides a cozy living/sitting area, an attractive work corner, and a fabulous hand-made sofa/bed for a second or third guest if required (extra charge for 3rd guest.) This is a great space for personal time or for an intimate gathering with a few friends.

Outside, a generous corridor patio-terrace has infinite possibilities, from fine dining under the starlit night to exercising, entertaining, swinging in the hammock and being with the rain. It remains shady in the heat of the day, and is always comfortable. The lawn and gardens are super user-friendly for play and gathering, for night-time around the fire, for holding ceremony, adaptable to your lifestyle.

The living space opens onto the corridor, leading past a semi-indoor shower and wash area with sink, storage, and shelving. Next door opens to the self-contained, equipped kitchen, with fridge, stove, ample and healthy cookware and utensils, and an eco water filter. An outdoor pila can be accessed through the window of the kitchen for rinsing water. The kitchen is equipped with high stool chairs for eating at the wooden counter or for use in preparing food in a relaxed manner. Continuing outside and past the kitchen, the corridor winds around to the pila and toilet area.

The house is accessible by road on 4 cuerdas (close to an acre) of land that stretch up the mountain and afford awesome vistas from so many vantage points; the mountain mother rises up on the north with sheer power and beauty; to the south, the Lago and volcanoes reflect the shifting light shows from dawn to dusk. In the night, the city lights of San Pedro dance across the waters. The neighbour on the east is the magical energy of the Sacred Mayan Site, a mighty rock that is visible through the eastern windows. This is a holy site, mostly unused (by humans), but the occasional host for Mayan fire ceremonies. On the west, our neighbour is a tract of undeveloped land, as well as a couple of rustic homes visible or audible in the distance from time to time.

There are several gardens with herbs, planted veggies, fruit trees and flowers, inviting the loving hands of any avid gardener, depending on the length of your stay. The tree population includes 2 fruit-bearing avocado trees, as well as banana, fig, jocote, cactus, and papaya trees; other trees grace the landscape with white, yellow or purple flowers depending on the time of year.

This beautiful, magical, and versatile space is a home to be with oneself, or to share with others. It is ideal as a creative retreat, as a getaway to a place of beauty, culture and diversity, or as a home base for anyone participating in one of the world-renowned courses and opportunities in our vibrant town of San Marcos. I invite you to experience the tranquility, inspiration, and beauty that I have been graced with in this remarkable place.

Guest access

You can have exclusive or shared possession of the entire hacienda living space. Please enjoy the company of gardens maintained by a competent and most respectful guardien who will administer to your needs. Discover the awesome lookouts on your own mountainside. I recommend weekly cleaning by the wife of the guardien, who knows the home very well and does a beautiful job in maintaining it in good standing. She can provide excellent tortillas upon order, and hand-washing for your laundry. Internet access is assured for any guest renting for more than 2 weeks and likely even for a shorter period.

Interaction with guests

During your stay, I will likely be in my home in Canada on Gabriola Island, but can be reached through or the internet. My neighbour across the way can meet, greet and settle you in, give you some tips, and get you started on your dream vacation here at Gaia Maya, Lago d'Atitlan.

The neighbourhood

This neighbourhood is bursting with life and opportunity. We are located halfway from San Marcos to Tzunana, a lovely walk in either direction, an ideal run for joggers in the spectacular scenery. Our mountainside sky space is filled with an exuberant soundscape, from the fabulous variety of birds, to the celebratory sounds of the pueblos wafting across the water. Sometimes in the still magic of the night, I feel that I can hear the shimmering voices of sparkling stars.

Wonderful offerings abound in San Marcos, a 12-15 minute walk from our gate...
Yoga classes, workshops and trainings, massage therapies, permaculture courses, a world class Tai Chi Center, Cacao ceremonies, great cafes and restaurants, live music and jams, volunteer opportunities in community projects, weaving and art opportunities, day trips and visits to local towns, hikes, and walks, easy access to some of our favourite daily food products (even kombucha and bliss balls!) and deliveries of coco and fruit arranged to your door...
whatever you are seeking, you are sure to find it here in this international hub.

Getting around

Our tereno has direct road access. Tuktuks (3- wheeled motorized vehicles) are reasonable and abundantly available. Drivers are eager to be called at anytime to take you wherever and whenever you want to go.
Both San Marcos and Tzunana have docks for the launchas (public motor boat transportation around the Lago) where getting on and off even in the wavy, windy weather is manageable. The launcha is often a meeting place for all kinds of interesting people. A great mode of travel, it offers a feast for the eyes as it skims past gardens, shoreline homes, and the striking impact of the ring of volcanoes that encircle the lake.

Other things to note

The biodiversity and charm of this natural environment includes a variety of life forms, which may delight us, or... Don't be surprised to see tiny ants, and occasionally some a little larger, wander in. I diligently keep them under control by maintaining cleanliness and mainly keeping food and dishes out of the living areas. Sprinkling diatomaceous earth in their path also discourages them effectively. The hacienda is above the road, with ample privacy, separated by its elevation and ever-growing vegetation. One can hear life flowing by, giving a deep sense of the culture here. The nocturnal orchestra is most soul-stirring, with sounds of lapping waves, crickets, and breezes that sing through the leaves, soothing the landscape.

This place can feel like home instantly. The decor has abundant cushions, little carpets and grass mats that can move around and fulfill many needs. Please treat all cloth and grass materials kindly, kept safely out of the night dampness and rain.
If you are a smoker, please smoke outdoors and dispose of butts discreetly.
Pets can be accommodated on the grounds, but are not allowed indoors. Note that any pet dogs who arrive will have to earn the friendship of the dogs who live on this land.
Please be extra careful not to leave healthy cookware unattended on the stove. I am keen to provide pots and pans that you are happy to use!
It is wise to have someone on the grounds at all times if possible. With a regular weekly/daily outing, your home will be vulnerable to theft. If you are planning to be out in the evening, or will be taking some nights elsewhere, make sure to inform the guardian that the grounds will need to be covered. At the same time, leaving at random times for a short period, having locked up your valuables (electronics!) can be fine.

Universal well-wisher, mother, grandmother, life-long Yogini, musician, songstress and composer, Kids' Yoga pioneer, land-owner, aspiring permaculturist, and Life-devotee-- these cover the essence of my self-identity at this stage of being.
I grew up in eastern Canada, where our wonderful country property was home to me every summer. I waited eagerly for this time each year. Life in Nature always attracted me and made sense: the graceful and potent beauty of the landscape with its shapes, colors and textures, the resonant sky-space alive with birdsong and the vibrant sounds of multidimensional life… splendid simplicity!
The space that has evolved here in Gaia Maya (the name that I have chosen for my land at the Lago) reflects my appreciation for the magical energy and culture which presides here. The stars had astrologically determined my love for beauty, and I keep the atmosphere around me vibrant and charming, filling my homes with the wonderful woven textiles and art of Guatemala. I also appreciate comfort without being spoiled, and like to have my special areas to sit, meditate, appreciate, and create!
As a creative force, I express through music, writing and illustrating, and always share locally with the children of the area around me. Here in Guatemala, I play and sing in an arts program for indigenous children, and also share my Yogic adventures with them.
I am drawn to both solitude and the dynamic company of my fellow beings. I have created a lifestyle in which I can become absorbed in both, drawing from the magnificent tapestry of life to live one of my self-styled themes:
Total Surrender and Full Embrace—fully open to All that Is and showing up with all I have to offer to help this world express its infinite capacity for Wonder and Love!
