Interaction with guests
We live in the city but can always be reached by phone, text messages and email with anything that comes up, questions or concerns.
A mobile phone that we provide is used to open the gate. See directions and House Manual (that you get access to when we accept your reservation) for details.
Spectacular Northern Lights (aurora borealis) can be seen frequently during winter (or after it gets dark at night sometime in August).
The cottage area is in a beautiful valley (Eilífsdalur = Eternal Valley in Miðdalur = Center Valley) with small family farms, roaming lifestock, large mountains, waterfalls, rivers, creeks and a number of hiking opportunities.
The fjord (Hvalfjordur = Whale Fjord) is spectacular and can be seen from the balcony (not the ocean during summer because the trees have grown so tall) and from the hills and certain parts of the road behind the cottage, and is only a few minutes drive from the area.
Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, is only a 30 min drive (city limit); 40-45 min to the city center.
Keflavik, the International Airport, is a 70-80 min drive (89 km).
A small store called Kaffi Kjós (Café Kjos) - open during weekends in Apr-May and every day during the summer - is in the next valley (East) by Meðalfellsvatn (Medalfell-lake), a 12-15 min drive.
Meðalfellsvatn (Meðalfell is the name of the fell/small mountain) is a beautiful lake with trout and salmon where the public can fish for a small fee. Guests are welcome to use our kids rods in the cottage.
The closest gas station and a small convenience store (Kjalarnes) is a 15 min drive towards Reykjavik. The closest (heated) swimming pool - not fancy.
The closest large supermarket/town (Mosfellsbær) is a 25-30 min drive (towards Reykjavik) with e.g. one of the nicest outdoor (and indoor) swimming pool (Lagafellslaug) with three slides, several hot tubs and more. Open all year.
One of the most famous salmon rivers in Iceland, Laxá í Kjós is a 10 min drive (East).
The tallest waterfall in Iceland, Glymur is a 20 min drive, plus approx. 20 min walk (in the bottom of the fjord). A famous hike trail (Leggjabrjótur) starts there (22,51 km / approx 3 hours).
The national park, Thingvellir (a part of the "Golden Circle") is a 40-45 min drive.
A regular car is needed. No public transportation.
During the winter (November-March) a 4-wheeler / CUV on winter tires (preferably with studs) is strongly recommended (we close from mid December to mid March).
Winds can reach 50m/sec, snow can get deep and icing on roads make them slippery.
Other things to note
It is very important that you read the House Manual before your stay.
There we attempt to explain everything that we feel is important for you know so that you can make the most out of your stay.
This is a family owned cottage that we designed and built ourselves with the help of carpenters in 2008-2009. We expect guests to take good care of it. No more than six guests over 2 years old are allowed.
Partying is not allowed.
Smoking is not allowed inside.
Pets are not allowed (for allergy reasons).
The house will be cleaned by us but you should leave the house in order (i.e. with the things where they were when you arrived), tableware washed, trash in the trash bin outside by the main entrance (during the winter in the trash containers by the mobile gate), and the hot tub securely strapped.
Please do not wash the linens (sheet sets). If you need to change them please use the spare ones in the cabinets/drawers and inform us so we can plan accordingly. We are very particular about how, with what and on which program and temperature they are washed :-)
During the winter you should NOT turn the heaters all the way down when you check out. If temp goes below 0C (32F) the water in the pipes could freeze and the pipes explode.
More details in the House Manual that you get access to when we have accepted your reservation.
From Jun 1 - Aug 31, 2017 the minimum stay is 4 nights.
