About this listing

A stay at "Casas Caiadas"  intends on being authentic, reminding us of lived experiences in a time past. The space

Casas Caiadas

"Casas Caiadas" is a boutique home close to Évora (Unesco heritage), designed for hosting families, or groups, up to 8 persons (10 persons from May to September).

You will find 3 independent houses, fully restored from a core of old water mills, in the heart of an Alentejo with waterways, luscious green landscape most of the year and megalithic rocks.

The social house consists of a kitchen, living and dining room: the meeting place per excellence, very welcoming, where handicraft objects combine with great elegance with furniture and minimalist pieces. In this house, besides every morning breakfast (included), local and delicious dishes may be prepared at all meals by a cook – hosted families may decide, each day, if they wish for one or two meals be prepared for them, or if they prefer to prepare them themselves (wine list available).

The other two houses are, respectively, a suite installed in a stone house and a house with 3 more rooms: a suite (room + bathroom) and 2 bedrooms with a sharing bathroom. The beach-like swimming pool installed between an ancient waterway of the mills maintains its most natural form. A place to relax by a stream that runs between stones, surrounded by centennial olive trees, menhirs and a beach-like swimming pool.

Around Casas Caiadas (whitewashed houses) there are fabulous country rounds to explore: walk or take a bike (3 bikes available). Nearby, there are villages of unique beauty and historical interest, with castles and other monuments, great restaurants and wineries (detailed information available on request).

Alentejo has distinct seasons, with a green spring rich in wild flowers. In the early summer, storks build their nests on rooftops in whitewashed villages, and the heat turns the plains to gold. And when night falls the sky offers a chance to contemplate the stars with visibility conditions like no other place in the south of Europe.

At Casas Caiadas it is as if you were alone in the world, despite the fact that the small village of Sabugueiro is located a little over a kilometer away... close to Évora, the authentic Alentejo!

Casas Caiadas is reachable by a country road. It is located 1 km from Sabugueiro, 15m from Arraiolos, 30m from Évora (Unesco heritage) and 1 hour drive from Lisbon.

We were a family of 6 and we were looking for a secluded farm house kind of stay and this was the perfect house and more. It's wonderfully decorated and we spent a lot of time at the pool outside the house. There is the main house that houses the kitchen, dining and living room. And 2 buildings for that house the sleeping quarters. We used the building with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. Mario is friendly and very helpful, communication went very smoothly. He responded quickly and made sure we were having a good time. He gave us recommendations on where to visit and where to eat. The stay comes with breakfast, Claudia came by every morning to make us breakfast. We also signed up for the dinner the day we arrived. She also makes our beds while we are eating, which was really nice. The house is close to many tourist sites within short driving distance. We visited Evora, Monsaraz, Estremoz, Arraiolos and Comporta for the beach. We also visited wineries close by and fantastic restaurants. We contemplated staying in Evora at one point, but we were so glad we chose not to. This house allows you to have a unique experience, allowing you to absorb the country side while living in a beautiful house with modern amenities. We had 2 babies with us and Mario provided us with 2 cots to use. The babies loved the pool with the beach entrance. They ran around in it without me worrying about them falling in. The place does not have a washer/dryer but has laundry service. The nearest nice supermarket was in Arraiolos 15 minutes away by car. I definitely recommend this house for those who want to experience Alentejo at its best!

Casas Caiadas was a great experience. It feels like you are in a different world, relaxing and peaceful. The restoration of the old farm into a modern, minimalistic space is extraordinary. It is a unique setting as the different rooms in the compound are separated, living room/kitchen from rest of rooms, however it works well when traveling with a group. The rooms didn't feel too warm despite not having air conditioning. The breakfast served every morning was great and we had one of the meals cook for us and was exceptional. Mario was very friendly and helpful. There is no TV, which we did not miss, so we could spend more quality time with family. We all agreed that the main drawback was the difficulty using the internet within the house, it was very difficult to get enough signal to send emails or do anything basic. Mario told us they are working in getting better signal, which I am sure it is not easy, but nowadays it is very difficult to spend a few days without internet due to work. I had to use my cell phone roaming service to do some basic work. It was nice to have the pool, the kids loved it, despite the cold temperature of it, not sure why it doesn't get warmer with the hot summer days. Highly recommended stay to relax and visit the area.

Josep, thank you for all your comments! In fact, our internet conection is very painfull since there is available a 2G GSM conection (voice only) in the area. However, seems that brand new 4G antena is coming to Sabugueiro and hopefullly it will give us signal (let´s pray...). Really glad that you all enjoyed your stay, All the best, Mário & Paula

We had a wonderful stay at Casas Caiadas. The grounds are absolutely stunning and the house is everything you want it to be. Beautiful, clean and welcoming. I loved its peaceful simplicity. Paola has an impeccable taste and decorated it flawlessly, with warm chic touches. The pool is an absolute joy to use, cleverly designed and so perfectly beautiful. Mario is a wonderful host, who was a pleasure to communicate with before and during our stay and went beyond to make sure we had everything we needed, paying extra attention to our initial inquiry about shade around the pool to the extend he had a shading sail installed for us... Last but not least, Claudia prepares wonderful breakfasts and her meals are not to be misses (we enjoyed several of them!)... A lovely, lovely stay.

Mario greeted us very well, showing us all aspects of the property. The photos were not deceiving, it was just as beautiful. Once you realize that this is a secluded property, it is very easy to disconnect and relax. The food prepared for breakfast and most dinners was amazing, Claudia is a very good cook and used her knowledge of local tastes very well. Because summer is so hot, the pool was a great addition and we made great use of it! Even though no air conditioning is included, the houses were built in a certain way that we were never hot, in fact the interior spaces were nice and cool. The overall experience was very memorable and we look forward to cherishing the memories! Thank you for sharing your little oasis with us Mario!

Having never been to Portugal or the Alentejo region, we didn't know what to expect. Casas Caiadas was an amazing experience for our family holiday to Portugal. The property and surrounding countryside created an incredibly relaxing experience. Mario is a very thoughtful and attentive host and was helpful in every way particularly with local activities and restaurant recommendations. The morning breakfast and home cooked dinners were an extra special touch. He has a great local wine selection as well! The property is very cool and very nice with a top-notch recent refurbishment. You will not be disappointed by the quality and comfort of the property as Mario clearly invested a lot in the refurbishment and maintenance of the property. The surrounding nature of the property....the smells, the sounds, the rolling hills....were beyond our expectations. The beach-like pool, the brook and the monolithic rocks provide plenty of places to wind down and relax. The hiking and biking around the property are great as well. You will need a car to explore the local area but everything is in a very scenic 45 min drive or less. We visited local villages with Roman ruins, wineries, horse farms, lakes, historic Evora, Alentejo coast and spent a few days in Lisbon. We are planning a return trip to Casas Caiadas next summer.

Casas Caiadas was the best part of our visit to Portugal. The complex, is gorgeous and secluded. You feel like you are in your own world. Mario met us in the nearest town and escorted us to Casas Caiadas. He gave us a tour and made sure we were comfortable. We were able to contact Mario with any questions and he always replied immediately. There are 4 bedrooms split between two buildings and another building that houses the family room, dining room, and kitchen. There is a beautiful pool, 2 bicycles, and great outdoor seating area. The interior design of all the buildings is gorgeous and it feels very luxurious while still being extremely comfortable. You can feel the love Mario and his wife put into Casas Caiadas through all the little details- perfectly placed antiques, custom made local rugs and great art. Claudia came and made breakfast for us and we paid extra to have her come and cook us dinner twice and lunch once. It was all excellent, the best food we had while in Portugal! And she was able to work around my dairy-free diet! Casas Caiadas is truly a special place. We didn't want to leave and definitely want to come back and stay for a longer visit. Don't hesitate. There is internet but it is painfully slow and only good for sending a text or two if you're lucky. It didn't really work for us. We could ride 5 minutes toward town and connect to our cellular network if we needed but it was nice to be "unplugged". It made the experience at Casas Caiadas even more relaxing. We were able to make day trips to Evora and Monsaraz but our favorite thing to do was hang out and enjoy Casas Caiadas!
