About this listing

You can book your own wooden Little House in the charming garden of Nancy & Hans Wiltink, called 'Garden at Sea' (Tuin aan Zee). An oasis in the city, next to an old lock in the canal. It's built as a place to relax, no cooking facilities.

The space

Long ago (once upon a time) the water between the city of Amsterdam and this garden was a salty sea.
Huge tall-ships passed the lock, coming back from the Indies, loaded with spices and other goods. The area later developped as an industrial area, with shipyards and related industries.
Nowerdays the North part of Amsterdam - Amsterdam across the sea so to speak - is rediscovered, and is seen as one of the most trendy neighbourhoods of the world.
nancy works as a storyteller, Hans is consultant for sustainable projects.

Guest access

Your own 'Little House' is in the garden, you have your own sitting space and share the garden with us. There is a fresh water swimming pond (no chlorides), chickens roam around and an orchard with pear trees, plums and cherries.

Interaction with guests

We live in our own house. Interaction is an option, you can just pick up the key and we respect your privacy. Nancy organises storytelling tours that you can book as an extra. Any time we are at home we love to give you tips about what to do or where to go.

This place is is great! Garden is lovely in May, the location could not be better (seriously), and the family is very nice. It's a no-stress place for a holiday (the chicken was a nice touch too). Amsterdam Noord is great for families with young kids, and the little house is well equipped. We also slept very well in the Dutch cupboard.

We had a great journey in Amsterdam, in partly thanks to the little house. Everything was clearly explained and was as described. Nancy was opened to answer the lot of questions we had to prepare our visit. The little house is really well located, 10 min by free boat, to the central station, from where you can go everywhere very easily. And it is a very quiet bubble after having done crowded visits downtown. The only matter was for little children. We had to be carefull of 2 points : the swiming pool and the 1st floor inside the house (we found it not enough secured for our little boy ; but is it a matter of point of view, here is ours). For the swimming pool, the contract is clear, we were aware of that and Nancy helped us to find a solution to secure us : she lent us a life jacket which was a perfect solution for us. Well, to conclude, a very nice little house, and you can choose it without hesitation. Thanks Nancy.

The location of the Little House is almost miraculous: it's a lovely, lovingly-built quiet space in a tranquil location near the water. You sleep in a cozy little Dutch cupboard bed and wake up to birdsong. You're surrounded by green grass, flowers, and a freshwater pool. Two curious chickens stand patiently outside your front door in the morning, hoping for breadcrumbs. Gracious hosts are there to patiently answer your questions and give gentle recommendations. And then, when you're ready to go out into the world, you just walk down the road for a few minutes, and voila! A (free, no less!) ferry is there to whisk you across the river, and within five minutes you're in central Amsterdam. We're still amazed by this place, and are also so grateful to have found such an idyllic place for our first stay in Amsterdam.

We had a lovely stay in this little cottage, the location is perfect, close to the centre and easily accessible by (free!) public transport, but also quiet and peaceful. The cottage itself is clean and well appointed, we went on an unseasonably warm weekend in March but I can imagine this place would be cosy all year round. Nancy and Hans were always around if we had questions but happy to leave us to our own devices, and their recommendations for food and such were spot on, especially the pizza place!

It's in a quiet place, with chickens and a romantic cottage, but a quick ferry ride to central Amsterdam! It's easy to travel back and forth and wonderful for a quick siesta! Definitely recommend!
