We offer two, licensed bedrooms to rent short-term that are part of our home. This listing is for the 2 rooms together.

Our location is terrific in an exclusive, highly-desirable part of beautiful Kailua. But please be advised that our house is nearly 50 years old. It has not been renovated and some areas show its age more than others, including these guestrooms.

Staying with us is more like staying with your friends. If you are expecting 5-star accommodations, this is not for you.

The space

This listing is for two licensed vacation rental guest rooms rented together as a pair. The "balcony" and "interior" rooms are part of our home located on canal in exclusive Kainalu Park just several lots from where President Obama vacationed for 9 years. They are on the second story and each has private bath, air conditioning, a queen size bed and cable TV. WiFi Internet is provided at no charge; reception for it is best from downstairs common areas. There is an exterior access to the rooms apart from our regular access to the house, so coming in later at night is okay. There is a shared kitchenette and laundry area. Downstairs common areas include large lanai with ping pong table (see if U can beat us in doubles!). Over 250' of great canal frontage provides idyllic viewing of kayakers and turtles. Private gated beach access is a short walk around the block.

Two person per room limit. Sorry, young children not allowed due to our unique staircase which has widely spaced vertical support poles.

We do not provide meals nor snacks, but do provide complimentary canned juices, coffee and tea. There is no daily maid service but requests are honored for changing of linens/towels.

See our other Airbnb listings for "interior" and "balcony" rooms rented separately.

Rate includes 9.25% "room tax" and 4.7% "sales tax" that we are required to pay to state.

Please note higher holiday rates Dec 15 - Jan 5.

Interaction with guests

My wife and I are on site and happy to offer advice and interact with guests.

Other things to note

Please park curbside fronting the house instead of in driveway so no one gets blocked in (our truck and trailered boat are usually in driveway). In fact, parking curbside further from our driveway/mailbox (and closer to the light pole) makes for better access to back side of house where your unit is.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Doug's place. The beach is very close, and Doug and Bird are very generous hosts, providing everything from snorkel gear to surfboards and kayaks. The shared space was a wonderful place to hang out and enjoy the tropical breezes, and we made lots of use of the ping-pong table. If you are looking for fancy, upscale, resort-style accommodations, this might not be your cup of tea, but if you want a homey, clean, and comfortable place in a very nice neighborhood with a very short walk to a great beach and easy access to everything in Kailua, this place is perfect.

Doug and Bird's rooms are a unique experience in one of the most beautiful places on earth. They are fantastic hosts, who made our group of 4 feel so welcome. They were extremely generous with both their space and local knowledge, which was accurate and invaluable. They have a very social space, with many of their friends and family dropping through, all of whom were lovely. They have three tortoises and a cat, who charmingly show up from time to time as well. The ping pong table is often in use-watch out for Doug and Bird, they are both extremely good. The Kailua beach is stunning and a short walk from their house. Do not miss sunrise. If we are ever lucky enough to return to Oahu, I hope that Doug and Bird still have the rooms for rent :)

I visited Doug with my mother and nephew who do not speak English. However, they still enjoyed a wonderful one-week holiday, thanks to Doug's warm smile, great atmosphere and hospitality. Doug's place is located in a quiet and safe area along a channel. All rooms, bathrooms, and the kitchen were very clean, and everything we needed for a long stay was ready to use. The view, particularly from a bedroom facing the channel, is amazingly beautiful. Doug also has many fun stuff to make your beach time more enjoyable. Ask him for more details. A five- to ten-minute drive will take you to many popular shops and restaurants, and a famous beach in Kailua. Additional great information, especially for Japanese visitors: Two Japanese restaurants are located nearby. Thank you Doug for allowing us to stay in such a wonderful place!

We had a such a wonderful time staying at this place. The room was very comfortable, wonderful location (it was great to walk to the beach to see the sunrise, and we were able to see all the excitement with President Obama staying nearby!) It was also great that we were able to rent everything we needed on the beach - chairs, umbrellas, body boards, snorkel sets, etc. My son loved playing the Bocce Ball in the garden by the canal. But the best part was such warm hospitality extended by Doug and Bird. They made us feel at home and provided all the useful guidance and advise for us to explore and enjoy Kailua. I would highly recommend this place to anyone. Thank you Doug and Bird for such a wonderful stay. We will practice ping-ping and will come back again!

Our stay at Doug & Bird’s home was perfect! We were on the island for a family wedding and booked two rooms for our 4 day stay. We were greeted with the warmest welcome and treated like family. Their home offers the quiet, relaxed and casual surroundings that we love with great views and close access to an awesome beach. The accommodations were clean and had everything we could possibly need. Doug was very helpful with information about local places to shop, eat and drink. Our only regret is that we had a full schedule and limited time, so we will definitely return again for a longer visit.

Our family stayed at this property for a week and enjoyed it very much. This is a homey, comfortable accommodation overlooking a quiet canal within a couple minutes’ walk of a fabulous beach. The owners are very hospitable and eager to help you get the most out of your island vacation whether recommending places to visit, loaning equipment or just sharing conversation in the common area in the evening. It is well located in that you can readily access a lot of the island’s most popular attractions, yet traffic is reasonable and the environment very relaxing. This is not a luxury resort, but for us it was a fabulous experience and we hope to return in the near future. Thank you Doug and Bird!

Doug and Bird were excellent hosts! Their neighborhood was absolutely beautiful, and it was great to be away from the chaos of Waikiki. They had many recommendations of where to eat and things to do, and each one turned out to be great. One of our favorite things to do at the house (besides challenge them to ping pong matches) was to walk up and down the canal at night with a flashlight and count how many sea turtles we could spot (we got up to 18)! We stayed over St. Patrick's Day, and they even invited us to share their meal and hang out with them and their friends for the night-- it was tons of fun! We would definitely return to stay with them again. Mahalo, Doug and Bird!

I am a lifetime Kailua resident. Live with wife, Bird, where we own and manage our vacation rental as part of our home. Retired from police department, I stay busy maintaining this and other rental properties in Kailua, doing most upkeep on my own. I stay active with slow-pitch softball, tennis, kayaking and ping-pong.
