The late Gabriel Garcia Marquez could not have found any other city as full of magic and charm as Cartagena de Indias.
Some of the most memorable passages of his novel "Love in the Time of Cholera" take place in the deserted "Parque de los Evangelios ", or "Plaza Fernandez de Madrid", as it is known today, in honor of an important doctor and historical figure by the name of Jose Fernandez de Madrid.
It was in this square that the starry-eyed Florentino Ariza sat with a book of poetry under an almond tree hoping to catch a glimpe of his beloved Fermina Daza who lived with her over-bearing father in the house across the street. In reality this house, one of the oldest in the Old City, is known as Casa de Don Benito, which today is a beautifully restored private residence located next to the L'Aliance Francesa. Interestingly enough, there is a knocker in the shape of a parrot on the front door - a reference no doubt to the quirky ominous opening sequence of the novel "Love in the Time of Cholera"...
This property is just steps away to restaurants, bars, pizzerias, supermarkets, banks, and close to many historic sites. Public transit a few blocks outside the walled city although taxis abound at very reasonable fares.
Other Things to Note
"Plaza Fernandez de Madrid is one of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's favorite squares, which inspired "Love in the Time of Cholera".

My wife and I stayed at Maria's for 7 nights and had a great time. Maria and John were extremely easy to talk too, pleasant and helpful. We sat on the balcony every night and watched the world of Cartagena go bye. The room was comfortable, as described and as shown in the pictures. I would definitely recommend this to anyone.
We had a great stay in this lovely studio overlooking Plaza Fernandez de Madrid in Cartagena! It looks exactly like in the pictures. Maria and her staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. It was located in a very convenient and central area of the Old City. Walking to the different plazas, restaurants, and attractions was really easy and fun. The studio itself was a good fit for a couple. It had a mini fridge and sink for us to use when we bought fresh fruits. The Wifi was helpful to check email and read about things we planned to do. The air conditioning was super-strong and amazing! The studio did have its quirks: the shower wasn't hot but kind of lukewarm and the bathroom light sometimes wouldn't turn on as a result of a shared fuse or something. Also, being located on a square has it's pluses and minuses. We loved the fact that we could hear the sounds of the lively nightlife - folks dining in the street, musicians serenading and performing, and the clip-clop of the horse drawn carriages. The balcony lent itself to enjoying the warm nights and the plaza entertainment. However, if you were looking for a very quiet retreat, this probably isn't for you. Overall, we had an amazing stay in Cartagena and would not hesitate to stay there again.
This was a great place. The room is as advertised. I had everything I needed. Very clean and tidy. Great location right next to a park that feels more frequented by locals than by tourists (which I view as a positive). Maria was an excellent host and fixed any problems I had as well as provided suggestions on where to go and what to see.
Maria was informative, helpful, accommodating and so very kind. Her instructions getting to the apartment and general guidance were great.
The room is in a stunning white building. There is a common area and a private key to your room--everything was accurately depicted and described. Downstairs there is a cafe that serves tinto, chocolate, and breakfast. Very convenient to start your days or end your days there.
Maria and the room were both lovely--we hope to be back!
My husband and I decided to book with Maria because of all the amazing reviews her place was receiving. I am including yet another one. We stayed for three nights in February 2014. The city is beautiful. This studio in particular was perfect for us. It has two doors and a balcony overlooking one of it's most charming and quiet squares. High ceilings, air conditioning, refrigerator and living area complete the package. I loved that we had our own building key and did not have to get buzzed in by a concierge every time we came and left. Maria is friendly and very helpful. She is present and attentive when you are in need and gives her guests the space to navigate on their own. The area is very central, yet not on the loud and busy blocks just streets away. We would have stayed for the entire 10 days but our plans included some travelling. Though, we did stop by for a coffee downstairs in the cafe and a chat with Maria before we left. We will be back...
Excellent location, perfect spot to sit, people watch, and take in the beauty of this great city!
Our apartment was in a great location overlooking a square which we thought was one of the nicest squares in the old city. The room was a good size and had a really high ceiling which combined with the air conditioning kept the room cool. Maria was a really helpful host and gave us plenty of info on how to spend our time. The coffee shop below made great juices.
Cartagena is a really beautiful place, lovely to wander around and look at the old buildings. We easily managed to spend a week in the city with a couple of trips out.
