Located in the heart of East Nashville and just a mile from downtown, this cozy apartment houses you minutes away from everything Nashville has to offer.
Our basement apartment is steps from the Cumberland River and Shelby Park, 1.5 miles to downtown, LP Field, and the interstate, and 1 mile from popular 5-points. Whether you’re here to experience one of the country’s emerging foodie cities or you’re in town for a conference, the location suits any traveler. And unlike many Airbnb hosts these days, we’re Nashville natives and can help you engage the city either as a typical tourist or like a local. We’re particularly savvy on restaurants off the beaten path and pride ourselves on extensive knowledge of Tennessee state parks.
Yeah, we know cozy is code for small, but the uniqueness of this 600-sf space impresses our guests as charming rather than cramped. The quirks you might imagine about a basement apartment are probably true. It’s got relatively low ceilings, the plumbing is audible, and it’s always about 5 degrees cooler than the rest of the house. Moreover, my husband and I live upstairs and have two kids. Our toddlers won’t wake you with any cries, but the pitter patter--or rather thud thud--of their scurrying feet are certainly noticeable. Most guests don't mind, but some have found their footsteps mildly annoying. Additional quirks include that the bed is built into the wall, so you step up to the full-size mattress and snuggle into a little niche—while it’s kind of like sleeping in an adult-sized bunk bed, it’s not necessarily handicap accessible. Many guests describe it as sleeping in a treehouse nook.
I begin with these oddities so that your expectations are accurate. But I hope that doesn’t detract from the allure of the space—if you’ve lived in an apartment building with units above you, your experience here won’t differ much. All tenants we’ve welcomed adore the uniqueness of the ambiance and decor, appreciate the privacy (or conversational nearby hosts if desired), and love to gander at our backyard chickens from the private patio. Yes, your mini-fridge will be stocked with eggs from Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph, and Amy Poehler, the friendly fowl whom you can thank in person for breakfast.
•Fully furnished mini-kitchen (microwave, toaster, refrigerator/freezer, full range oven and stove)
•Kitchen utensils, pots, and pans needed for cooking and dishes for 4 people.
•New memory-foam, full mattress
•A pack-n-play is available upon request
•French press with locally-roasted coffee
•Eggs from the backyard hens
•Flat-screen TV with DVD Player (cable included)
•Private patio with seating for four and view of "the wilderness"
•Full HVAC (with an additional space heater and fan, if needed)
•Plenty of parking on the street
•Full bathroom with basic toiletries provide (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, tooth brush/paste, etc.)
•Free laundry access (units shared with us)
•Board games (children's toys/books are available upon request)
The apartment may NOT be for you if:
•Overhead footsteps are intolerable or you plan to sleep 'til noon (we try to keep them quiet, and get out of the house often, but we won't strap them to a chair)
•You require ADA-compliant amenities (a small footstool is necessary for mounting the bed, and access is by a stone path meandering around the house)
You have many Airbnb options to choose from in Nashville, but if you can appreciate a unique space and want an East-side experience close to the city center, we believe ours won’t disappoint. You are welcome to our home!
If you never want to see us, you won’t have to. We’ll text you the code to the lockbox on the door so you can get inside on your own, which is helpful for all of us if you’re arriving late. You’ll have the whole lower level to yourself, save for the mudroom/laundry area you enter from the outside. A separate, interior locking door divides the apartment from the rest of the house.
Interaction with guests
As mentioned earlier, we live upstairs, so even if you don’t want to see us, you may hear our footsteps. Otherwise you can have as much privacy as you’d like. But we know that Airbnb guests are often outgoing folks eager to meet new people. If that describes you, we’d love to chat and talk up our lovely city. We are always a text or phone call away if you have any questions. Whatever you prefer!
-We do ask that guests do not smoke inside. You are welcome to smoke outside on the patio.
-No pets please.
-Check out time is at 11 am. Later arrangements can sometimes be made if given enough notice. We can also hold your bags for you after check out, if needed.
I’m Merrill Durham. My husband and I were raised in Nashville, and our daughter is ultra-local: she was born in our home! Incidentally, I’m a Certified Doula and childbirth educator serving mommas in middle Tennessee. I work from home when I’m not attending births and am the primary caregiver to our dear Genevieve. My husband works for a local nonprofit that does healthcare for the homeless. You might think of us as modified East-Nashville-hipsters: bike-commuting, chicken-raising, world-traveling, Walmart-avoiding, organic-eating foodies, who still actually watch TV and won’t scoff at instant coffee. We love meeting new people and opening our home for guests.
