Neighbourhood highlights

Via Maqueda is one of the main streets of the historic center of Palermo, the property a stone's throw from all the monuments and the central station of Palermo will allow you to explore the center and move comfortably by train to reach Cefalù and many Sicilian cities.

At the end of the 16th century, the Viceroy decided to create in Palermo a new road hub that crossed Via Toledo to give a greater relief to the urgent requests of the nobility who asked for new areas to build their buildings, while at the same time making movement within the city more flowing. The road was designed in 1577 and will be completed in 1599.

This way, the city's five historic neighborhoods became four, creating the four commandments (The Loggia, The Cape, Kalsa, and the Hotel).

Map that takes part of Via Maqueda
At the intersection with Cassaro, you'll find Piazza Vigliena, better known as the Four Amounts, in an ocgonal shape.

In the centuries after the cut, an intense construction activity began with the creation of noble palaces, churches and convents.

As the new road hub perfectly designed perpendicular to the ancient Cassaro, it created a cross (looking at the city from the top) that was nicknamed the Baroque Cross.

At the end of 2014 the stretch between the Massimo Theater and the Four Amounts is closed to traffic during the day; in August 2019 the stretch between the Four Amounts and the Tukory course is also made pedestrianized. The road becomes the main street of the city's promenade, favoring the opening of numerous new activities.
