In the Biological Reserve Caoba you will be sleeping in very confortable and unique tree house built on a mango tree overlooking the river. You will be staying in a place full of peace and nature, hearing the sound of the water all the time, having the possibility to swim in a pristine river, see butterflies and hummingbirds, walk on ancient indigenous stoned paths, eat healthy and first and foremost relax far away from the tourist track.

The space

The property you will be staying in is a biological reserve in the tropical forest of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. The property was purchased 18 years ago by a German/ Colombian biologist couple with the purpose of reforesting the almost 32 hectares. Now we don’t need to reforest anymore, but sustain this magical place. Everything here has been built bit by bit with effort and love for nature and creativity. From a labyrinth of medicinal plants with a meditation fountain and Coi carps in the middle, to a collection of palms, trees, pineapples and water plants, from ancient indigenous stoned paths to indigenous Houses and a museum, from our macaw project to feeding Amazonian fish and last but not least: our pristine river. It’s a place not just to relax, but also to explore and learn. Staying with us is not “just” the accommodation, but experiencing the entire place. The tree house you will be staying in is on a mango tree with a balcony overlooking the river and forest.

Guest access

When staying with us you have access to the entire reserve, where you can visit the animals, stroll or find a nice spot to do yoga or meditate. We have also the best natural pool in the region.

Interaction with guests

In the reserve there will be always someone if needed.
We are a private and family owned natural reserve and we always look forward to welcome guests from all over the world, who are interested in spending some time in the nature and relaxing. Just having a pleasant and good time with us. Feel free to see how we do our home bread in our clay oven =)

Other things to note

In the property you will be able to see how Caimans and the biggest amazonian fish (arapaima gigas) are fed. If you wish you can book beforehand a small introduction into medicinal and edible plants.
Also: It is important for you to know the cellphone reception is very bad. Nowadays, we consider this to be one of our attractions.
Dont forget your camera. you will use it very often!!! Bring trekking shoes or shoes for trekking bring also your bathing suit.
Please be aware, we are located 11 km away from Santa Marta only access with an off road, therefore driving to Santa Marta can take sometimes up to 1 hr.

No words can describe the beauty and love put into this place. It's surrounded by nature and love and you feel that you are living in someone's home! The food is definitely the best I have tasted in Colombia and the hosts are truly special. A place that I will like to keep a secret, but it really should be shared and appreciated!!

The Biological Reserve of Caoba is something of a fairytale. Every step taken within the reserve will bring you new sights, beautiful, exotic plants and up-close views of wonderful animals. I have always wanted to stay in a treehouse and this first experience, being so close to nature, is exactly how I imagined it and more. From the animals, to the medicinal plant labrynth, the look out point and the hidden swimming hole, we had a great experience. Not to mention the amazing food Kath cooked for us, accommodating our vegetarian diets and surpassing expectations. If you're staying or passing by Santa Marta, I couldn't recommend Kath's place more highly.

If you still have doubts booking a few nights in one of these accommodations or to spend a day here, please don't! Book it! We stayed in the treehouse (yes you are reading that right - treehouse) and it was -hands down- the best experience I had in Santa Marta. Walking around learning from plants, herbs, flowers, animals, trees, the river, Koguis... and that just next to your house. Literally, the best experience I had in Colombia! Thanks a lot, Katherine, Eberhard, Gloria, Mike, and all the others that made this stay one to never forget :) We will be back for sure!

Katherine's place was beyond amazing. We stayed in the treehouse and it's an experience like no other. They cooked us breakfast, lunch, and dinner, which was all delicious. There is so much to do on the reserve. We hiked up to the waterfalls, went to a cacao farm, saw all kinds of wildlife, swam in the river, and relaxed. One of the most unforgettable places and experiences.

This AirBnb is genuinely a paradise. In addition to the beautiful tree house you get an entire nature preserve to explore, with fruit bats and caymans and basilisk lizards and giant Amazonian fish and a medicinal plant labyrinth and macaws and wild peccaries, etc. etc. The location is remote and quiet with few other tourists, but there were plenty of things to do. The host Katherine is incredibly cool and thoughtful, as were the rest of her family that we met. Her English is perfect so there's no trouble if your Spanish is limited. The meals were all home-made from scratch and we looked forward to every dish. This is a nature preserve run by incredibly passionate, intelligent and welcoming people. Do yourself a favor and stay here if you can!

For anyone seeking a retreat, this is the place! The tree house is just the coolest, but the Reserve has so much else -- great swimming, interesting animals and plants and hammocks to relax and read in. On top of all of this beautiful nature, Katherine and her mom are wonderful cooks, using some ingredients from around the Reserve. If I'm ever back in this area, I will definitely stay again!

As a traveler: Traveling and enjoying nature is one of my passions. I have lived in many different places and always been open to new things and people. Another passion is food: cooking and eating.
Through Airbnb I have found one of the best ways to travel outside the tourist road and giving me the feeling to be at home in new place.

As a host: it's interesting and exciting meeting new people from different countries and even better to be able to show my guests the beautiful side of the Colombian nature. I am unbelievably grateful for the guests I have had the possibility to meet and connect with. Welcome to my little paradise.
