This is one of a few places in the area that has this feature.
Our sunny ‘studio' apartment (sleeps 2 +1 child) is located in the prestigious Vitalhotel leisure complex in the beautiful mountain valley, Gosau, close to Hallstatt. It's the Salzkammergut's premier ski resort (Dachstein-West) in winter, but in summer is centrally located to explore the most lovely lakes and tourist attractions. And we have one of the best views in the building up the valley to the Dachstein, and to the ski slopes 2.6km away.

The space
Our ‘studio' apartment faces south west, on the top floor of the private apartment block of the hotel, and enjoys sunshine from noon till dusk, making it and our balcony the perfect place to relax and dine at the end of active or lazy days in the mountains!

The main room is sunny and spacious, with twin beds and wardrobe to the rear and a new large sofa, dining table and sideboard at the front, leading on to the balcony.

There is also a bathroom, with a WC, tub and shower above, and a kitchen fully equipped for preparing snacks, picnics or proper meals any evening.

High up on the 3rd floor, our apartment and balcony boasts the best views in the building - all the way up the spectacular Gosau valley to the nearby Dachstein mountain, and across to the three churches and to the ski slopes. It's a special place to dine in the summer when the tinkling sounds of the cowbells and the distant church bells create a relaxing and memorable atmosphere.

We are surrounded by meadows, and a small river passes it, with the village centre only 500m away.

In winter guests also have a ski and boot locker, and a practice ski slope to use behind the hotel

Gosau offers a wide choice of local village, mountain-top and lakeside restaurants to choose from. Walkers can take the cable car at Gosausee at the end of the valley, to take them up to several mountain top 'alms' - with the Gablonzahut being the perfect place to take lunch in sight of the glacier and lake below!

But you need not eat out all the time; our small modern kitchen has all you need to prepare proper meals, as well as snacks and picnics, and breakfast, of course, with fresh rolls from 'downstairs'. We don't have an oven, but do have a microwave and a griller. Stay in for a romantic evening once in a while!

Gosau is at the unspoilt heart of the beautiful Salzkammergut lakes region, with its own lake, the Gosausee, at the end of the valley, tucked in below the massive walls of the Dachstein. It features a circular walking trail and a lovely lakeside restaurant with another stunning view of the glacier whilst enjoying an apfelstrudl after the walk.

Gosau is central for a huge range of exhilarating outdoor activities such as hiking, skiing, mountain-biking, rock-climbing, white water rafting, tubing, paragliding and hot-air ballooning. On top of that there is lake swimming, fishing, golf, boat trips, a cog railway ride, several spa towns, a salt mine and the Ice Cave to visit at Hallstatt down the road. With all this on our door step, our apartment is an ideal destination for a romantic break for couples of all ages, in summer or winter.

Reaching Gosau by road is a pleasant experience with good fast roads. Salzburg is only 50 minutes away, and there at the airport is car-hire, taxis and public transport. There is a train that goes south to Golling to connect with the bus to Gosau. Buses run regularly through the valleys, but a car is recommended outside winter as it allows guests to explore the local area at their own pace.

Local charges: The Austrian Tourist Tax, which is 2 euro / adult / day and €1 / child / day is collected by the hotel Reception. A 'cleaning/bed-linen and towels service' fee of 45 Euro is added to the rental when you book. Or can be paid on site.

A minimum of 4 nights is required to stay here (3 in low season), and if guests would like another private apartment for their friends they can book it, if available, through us. Book now!

Downstairs, the hotel provides us with a wonderful mix of leisure, health and sports facilities that guests love after busy, active or lazy days in the mountains, including free use of the indoor pool and sauna. There is also a Wellness Centre and gym, tennis hall, games room, bars and a fine full-service restaurant for the occasional treat. Quiet gardens and the terrace give us more options for relaxing outdoors.

The owners live in England, so we have the on site services of Rita, who lives close by. She manages all the change-overs and cleaning, and provision of fresh bath towels and bedding.

We have no 'High Street' as Gosau village is spread around the whole valley in 3 settlements (Upper, Middle and Lower). There are banks, a good supermarket (ADEG is only 550 m away.), fuel station, hotel bars and restaurants in various locations! And a regular bus service to neighbouring villages (and to the ski slopes direct from our building in winter).

Bring your own music player and hair-dryer! Bed linens and towels are included, however guests should also bring another towel for use in the wellness centre. Your old DVDs are welcome to leave for others, too!

Guest access
Our guests are free to wander about the Vitalhotel building and grounds, mixing with the hotel's guests who are mainly on Half-Board or Full, depending on the season. Use of the facilities is encouraged, with various charges, whilst use of the pool and sauna is free to us and our guests. Those wishing to eat in the restaurant may do so with a little advance notice to the Manager so they can fit you in. You pay our 'Owners' rates, about €23/adult to include a 3-course buffet meal, not including drinks.

Other things to note
Guests may use the hotel ski facilities in the winter, including Boot Room, Ski Locker and free ski-bus to the slopes form the front of the building.
The hotel Receptionists are not responsible for the care of our apartment, and should not be expected to help out in any way.

Gosau, Upper Austria, Austria

400 Kms of marked walking trails start from our front door, if that's what you have come for - so no need for a car. There is the cable car in summer to take you up to the Zweiselalm plateau, and several bars, and trails. And guests should all go for a walk around the Gosausee, and go beyond, to the Hinterer Gosausee too, to be busy for several days.

Gosau village is spread around the whole valley in 3 settlements (Upper, Middle and Lower). There are banks, a supermarket, a fuel station, hotel bars and restaurants in various locations all in sight of the spectacular Gosaukamm ridge at the far end. And a regular bus service to neighbouring villages (and to the ski slopes direct from our building in winter).

In winter, of course, it is skiing on Dachstein West, that everyone has come for! And the skiing is good, with the facilities getting better each year. A free bus takes guests to the ski lifts from the front door.

Hallstatt is on the lake at the end of our valley, 13 kms away, and is a popular tourist destination due to its beauty, the Salt Mine, and pretty lakeside and town square bars and restaurants, and across the lake (ferry to train), there is the cable car, at Obertraun to the 5 Fingers Panorama Trail and Look-Out and Ice Cave.

We have owned this apartment since January 2010, and join another dozen British owners there. Like the previous owner we have continued to rent it out for winter ski holidays and summer holidays. Initially we needed to cover some of the purchase expenses with lettings, but now we are upgrading the fixtures, so please come and stay! The sports and leisure complex, where we are located, has refurbished its reception, bar and restaurant areas as well as the Wellness Centre, outdoor terraces and gardens, so it seems to be getting better all the time! It is located in a rural setting beside a small river, surrounded by grazing pastures, 500m off the main road. Gosau is an ideal place to stay for a short break in the summer, being close to Salzburg, in the midst of the nicest parts of the lakes region. In the valley is the Gosausee (lake) with its pretty and gentle trail around it, a cable car lift up to the plateau above where there are several mountain top restaurants, one with a fabulous view of the Dachstein and its glacier. Here, in winter is the Dachstein-West ski area. Hallstatt, so famous for its lakeside beauty, is just outside our valley, and it's more popular than ever, especially with Chinese tourists who marvel at it, since a life size copy of the whole town has been recreated somewhere in China! We recommend our guests enjoy all the active outdoor activities, before returning for a relaxing session in the Wellness Centre downstairs and then some further relaxation on our balcony until the sun goes down.
