The space

The Yellow Hibiscus overlooks the 20 acre estate surrounded by rainforest within the Puna Forest Reserve, 4 miles from Pahoa but far from neighborhoods. The grounds are very peaceful with bananas, fruit orchard, avocados, palms, and many flowers.

We use natural cleaning products, solar-power and non-toxic pest control. Our nighttime temperatures are perfect for restful sleep. We value your privacy and don’t require interaction for check in or checkout unless you want to say hi or have questions.

The cottages were built in 2013 and Jacklynn bought the estate in 2015 so reviews were restarted to reflect new ownership. The Puna Rainforest Retreat includes the 4 bedroom lodge, swimming pool and four cottages; Green Bamboo, Blue Ginger, Lavender Orchid and Yellow Hibiscus. See listings below for more information.

Other things to note

The 20 acre retreat is within the Puna Forest Reserve and our grounds are surrounded by rainforest that is part of the retreat. Hawaiian Natives own the non-private property within the reserve to protect the Native Ohia forest that is sacred to them. The reserve was acquired by the Trust for Public Lands and transferred to the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. The reserve is endangered species habitat for the Endangered Hawaiian Owl, Hawk, and Bat. While these species are otherwise very rare they are often seen at the retreat. Researchers continue to identify new species and there is ongoing collaboration to control invasives.

The Ohia Forest has giant ferns, diverse species of orchids, epiphytic plants, strawberry guava, passion fruit, geckos, praying mantis and songbirds. The rainforest is very dense and so we ask guests to remain on the grounds for their safety unless we discuss the specific hazards. The retreat property surrounding the grounds feature many skylights into lava tubes as well as lava trees and caves. The Puna Rainforest is invigorating to see, taste, hear and feel.

Nice cottage on a beautiful lot. WiFi is limited so be prepared with downloaded movies for rainy days. If you appreciate quiet this is the place for you.

As advertised. Exceptionally clean, quiet and safe. Shared area with three other cabins. Minimal but elegant decor and great location if you're viewing the lava as it goes into the ocean.

Great location! Great communication with host. Loved the town and the pool on-site. We were a little wary about the no AC, but the evening temps were great and they had a fan. No tv, which is also really nice. Even with 3 kids. Forced them to get outside and play!

The Yellow Hibiscus cottage is an awesome spot! The grounds are beautiful and we loved having coffee on the lanai while enjoying the morning - and the company of the resident cat (he's a sweetheart). We visited sites across the southeast side of the island during our stay here and it was the perfect base! Just a heads up for prospective guests - the wifi was inconsistently available while we were there. It wasn't too much of an issue as our stay was short, and we spent the days away; but, if you're staying longer, keep it in mind since cell service is close to zero.

This is a romantic, well-appointed cottage in a secluded rainforest reserve. there is no tv or radio but the sounds of the rainforest are (EMAIL HIDDEN)e prepared with flashlight, umbrella, and some light food provisions as there's no store nearby. Volcanoes National Park 40 mile away was awesome. We enjoyed dinner with live music at Kaleo's in Pahoa. We would love to stay here again!

Response from Jacklynn:
We are happy you enjoyed! FYI- there is a flashlight and an umbrella under the kitchen cart. Perhaps you didn't see it. Also, there are two grocery stores in Pahoa only 4 miles away.

Nice place to stay. 40 min to volcano national park. 18 min to boat launch if you are taking a boat to see the lava falling into the ocean. House was very clean and well cared for.
