The space

The Yellow Hibiscus overlooks the 20 acre estate surrounded by rainforest within the Puna Forest Reserve, 4 miles from Pahoa but far from neighborhoods. The grounds are very peaceful with bananas, fruit orchard, avocados, palms, and many flowers.

The Yellow Hibiscus cottage has a queen size bed with a private lanai and ocean view. The second bedroom has a trundle bed that expands to two twin beds for extra guests. There is a small kitchenette with all the amenities. The full bathroom has a extra deep sink also used by the kitchen.

We use natural cleaning products, solar-power and non-toxic pest control. Our nighttime temperatures are perfect for restful sleep. We value your privacy and don’t require interaction for check in or checkout unless you want to say hi or have questions.

The cottages were built in 2013 and Jacklynn bought the estate in 2015 so reviews were restarted to reflect new ownership. Interaction with guests

We value your privacy and don’t require interaction for check in or checkout unless you want to say hello or have questions. Caretakers live next door and we are available if you have any questions. The property is very private and quiet. The only other folks you'll see are guests.

The neighbourhood

There is little reason to leave a 10-mile radius but Hilo is only 24 miles away, Volcanoes National Park 40 miles and the Mauna Kea Observatory, where you can view through telescopes, is 50 miles. Kona is 100 miles over the new saddle road making the connection to the other side in about 2 hours. Puna Rainforest Retreat is special because you can stay in a private place in a natural setting away from the busy neighborhoods and resorts but are still close enough to enjoy the attractions.

Getting around

We are centrally located with many attractions within a short distance. The retreat is quiet and has no light pollution at night for unbelievable skies. Neighboring properties include La’akea Permaculture Farm and rainforest. Opihakao Road, only 1 mile away, is a world-class skateboarding hill and one of the best downhills and climbs for road bikes on the island. Cycling is ideal here because of the short distances between attractions. Natural steam vents are close by and funky Pahoa is 4 miles away offering fantastic organic food and supplies leaving little reason to leave Puna. The Ahalanui Beach Park and Pohiki Bay are 8 miles away and offer paddleboarding, surfing, body boarding, swimming and hot springs. Kalapana and the new Kaimu Black Sand Beach are about 7 miles away near Uncle Robert’s kava bar and Sunday farmers market. A recent addition to Kalapana is the UFO landing pad and star visitor sanctuary created by the Reinstated Kingdom of Hawaii. The best snorkeling on the island is 10 miles away at Wai’opea tidepools near Green Lake and the heated ocean pools at Champagne Ponds. Also near Kapoho is the Ancient Mango Grove leading to intertidal swimming pools.

Other things to note

The 20 acre retreat is within the Puna Forest Reserve and our grounds are surrounded by rainforest that is part of the retreat. Hawaiian Natives own the non-private property within the reserve to protect the Native Ohia forest that is sacred to them. The reserve was acquired by the Trust for Public Lands and transferred to the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. The reserve is endangered species habitat for the Endangered Hawaiian Owl, Hawk, and Bat. While these species are otherwise very rare they are often seen at the retreat. Researchers continue to identify new species and there is ongoing collaboration to control invasives.

The Ohia Forest has giant ferns, diverse species of orchids, epiphytic plants, strawberry guava, passion fruit, geckos, praying mantis and songbirds. The rainforest is very dense and so we ask guests to remain on the grounds for their safety unless we discuss the specific hazards. The retreat property surrounding the grounds feature many skylights into lava tubes as well as lava trees and caves. The Puna Rainforest is invigorating to see, taste, hear and feel.

Nice place to stay. 40 min to volcano national park. 18 min to boat launch if you are taking a boat to see the lava falling into the ocean. House was very clean and well cared for.

Jacklynn is great about responding to questions in a timely manner. Her property is very spacious with a wonderful hiking path. You feel safe and peaceful there, with plenty of outdoor space for outside activities. My daughter fell in love with badminton while we were there!

We loved our stay in the Yellow Hibiscus House - what a great place to live! If you're into nature and like to stay off the beaten path, this place is perfect for you! The house was very clean and had new furnishings. It is close enough to Pahoa that if you need groceries, shops, restaurants it's only about a 10 minute drive. They have a guest book that has very detailed and informative information about the surrounding areas and what to do. We'll come back for sure :)

I don't think I could ever convey how grateful we are to have found the Puna Rainforest Retreat. It was exactly what we were looking for. Quiet, tranquil, and off the grid, but also incredibly accommodating and cozy. Though we shared the space with three other cabins, we still felt like we had privacy and in many ways the communal aspect of the space added to its charm. Our hosts left us to have our vacation but were very responsive and friendly anytime we had questions or needed advice. There is s great guestbook in the cabin that was very helpful both in understanding the property and the surrounding area of Pāhoa. Also the cat that lives on the property is pretty much the coolest dude ever! If you are looking for a quiet place to return to after adventurous days of exploring the big island, this place is pretty much the best choice you could possibly make. I could not recommend it enough, nor could I imagine wanting to stay anywhere else. Nothing but fond memories, and there is no price for that.

Amazing retreat! Noticed we did not had a tv on the last day and it was not needed. This place felt just like home as we are originally from Puerto Rico and we could hear the coqui's at night sign just like in PR. The house is exactly what we expected and needed. The walking path was awesome and it was secluded like que wanted to be! But, close to lave sites. This place is awesome!!! I would stay here again without a doubt, if I visited in the future!

I'm from Haines, Alaska with my partner, Elijah and two daughters where we are surrounded by glaciers, rivers, salmon and sunshine. We do environmental research, cleanups and restoration with our company, Chilkat Environmental. I teach dance and Elijah is all about mountain biking. We are excited about sustainable living and growing food in Hawaii.
