Staying at Lillian's house was the highlight of our holiday. I was reluctant to leave. The house is essentially one large room with a mezzanine floor as a bedroom. There is also a bathroom. A traditional stole built building but lovingly detailed, all hand made from the door knobs to the staircase. A large stone patio outside is shaded by trees and a canopy and was a perfect place to sit and relax and enjoy the peace and quiet of the mountains.
Lillian, Stephan and the children live next door in the farm house and are a delight. They met us as we arrived, made us feel so welcome. They have good English so we had a number of conversations about their life in this rural idle where, after the children, their self sufficiency, and environmental consciousness were central to their lives.
So staying at this amazing place is more of an experience than just a roof over your head. Lillian gave us a guided tour of the farm which included ancient farm buildings and a newer roundhouse which is being finished off for guests.
If you can tear yourself away, the house is situated on the edge of the National Park, so it provides easy access to some of the most stunning scenery and dramatic trekking anywhere in Europe.
Vieira do Minho is very close by with all the amenities you need and because of the tourist trade to the Nation Park there are plenty of bars restaurants and attractions near by.
If it is high end luxury you are after Lillian's house is not for you , but if you appreciate living lightly on the planet (with Wi FI), then you will love it here. We will go back.
