About this listing

Come and stay in your very own 'mini-castle'! Log burner in a cosy sitting room and a bedroom located above the arch, accessible via a romantic stone spiral staircase; Ayton with its pub and village shop just a moment's walk away, the Gatehouse is a retreat like no other. For additional guest reviews from June, click on 'The Host' and then the reviews!

The space

Less than four miles from a dramatic coastline which also boasts unspoilt sandy beaches, the gatehouse to Ayton Castle enjoys an ideal location. Decidedly smaller than its grander 'relation' further up the drive, it combines the comfort of a cosy cottage with the beauty of a castle!

The Gatehouse is built out of the same pink sandstone as Ayton Castle (in the archetypal Scots baronial style) and commands a prime position at the entrance to the castle's extensive grounds. There is ample parking space, and guests also have their own private (and enclosed) garden, as well as access to parts of the estate.

Sleeping just two, the interior consists of a sitting room with log burner, a small but well-equipped kitchen, a bathroom and bedroom. For those who are in pursuit of a little magic, access to the bedroom via a fairy tale spiral staircase should more than compensate for the bathroom being on the ground floor!

Recently restored, the Gatehouse is an unusual delight.

Other things to note

*Bed linen and towels etc. are supplied.
*Due to its stone spiral staircase, the property is not suitable for toddlers or those with reduced mobility.
*The fridge does not have a freezer compartment and there is no shaving socket in the bathroom.
*Underfloor heating in kitchen and bathroom (radiators elsewhere).
*Guests are welcome to smoke in the garden!
*Local pub closed: Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
*We do not include a cleaning fee, and ask that guests leave the property much as they find it.
* Well-behaved dogs (up to 2 if not too large) are welcome, but we do ask that they not go on soft furnishings or upstairs, they have clean paws when in carpeted areas, and that the lawn and flower beds are also left as they are found!
*Care and attention, and appropriate footwear advised in castle grounds.
*Please also note that we are not responsible for the loss of personal belongings or valuables.
* The Gatehouse thanks you in advance for loving and respecting it as you would your own home :).

We had a delightfully relaxing week long stay at the tiny castle. Everything was truly great from the local amenities to the local attractions to the slightly further afield attractions. Properly great.

Absolutely amazing. Beautiful place, warm and helpful host, friendly folks/great food and beer down at the pub which is just down the road, and lots of interesting ways to spend a day along the coast.

Our stay at Ayton Castle's Gate House, and more importantly, our host, Diana, made our holiday in Scotland everything that we had hoped for and more! My daughter and I felt like princesses in the castle here. The Gate House, both inside and out, was a dream: beautiful, cozy, and full of upscale amenities. Diana is a true gem, and I am honored to now call her my friend. From the beautiful fresh flowers in nearly every window to the basket of goodies on the kitchen counter, not a single detail was overlooked. We stayed for a full week, and truly, we never wanted to leave! Of all of the places that I have stayed around the world, this one surpasses all others by far.

A magical and romantic experience staying in The Gatehouse. The ambiance of the home and its beautiful garden was so cosy and relaxing. The house is beautifully equipped and the personal touches Diana adds make such a difference. She made us feel like honored guests! We loved strolling the grounds of the castle and were captivated by the wonderful old trees and the birdlife. We thoroughly enjoyed our walk along the coastal path from Eyemouth to St Abbs and were fortunate to have beautiful sunny weather. Truly a memorable stay - highly recommended, particularly because Diana was such an awesome host.

The gatehouse was easy to find, the setting was beautiful, the accommodation was very comfortable and clean, such a cosy place to stay. Easy distance to visit lots of stunning castles and beaches. A beautiful place all together. Diana was incredibly welcoming and kind with lots of helpful advice about what to do in the area.

From the very moment we booked this stay has been full of communication. Beginning with Diana saying hello introducing herself and saying she looks forward to meeting us, to her providing detailed instructions on how to get there. She gave us such a warm welcome! I loved feeling like we were staying in our own mini Edinburgh castle. This property is perfect! It is relaxing, calming with a beautiful private garden area from where you can watch and listen to a vast aray of wildlife. The home itself just welcomes you and it made my soul just feel (URL HIDDEN) very sad to leave! Diana has thought of everything I feel you may need for your stay (in particular I was delighted to find a potato pealer so I could make corn beef hash for my friend accompanying me). Diana is just an encyclopaedia of knowledge of places you can visit. We visited the local shop a couple of times and found the locals to be very friendly and greeting us with a smile and a hello. On my final day I was missing my Maine coon cat from home and happened to be outside packing up our car and had the pleasure of meeting a very lovely local lady who was walking her stunning puppy dog called Luna (aka floppy ears). I got a lovely cuddle and kiss from Luna, whilst her owner chatted to me as if we had known each other for forever. It was so nice because these days the hustle and bustle of life can stop us from appreciating simple moments, but standing outside the gatehouse with its stunning beauty having someone taking the time to chatter to you and welcome you..,just lovely. I felt like I was at my second home!! I don't travel away from home much, but the beauty of this trip has inspired me to take up photography and I have no doubts I will return to stay again to capture the beauty. If you get the chance to stay here take it! You will not be disappointed!

Diana User ProfileDiana is a superhost.

I work as part of the team at Ayton Castle: a magnificent baronial style structure set amid the undulating landscape of a delightful corner of Scotland.

I speak English, French and conversational Italian, while my partner - who helps out on occasion - also speaks Dutch (as a Dutch man this is hardly surprising!) I have always loved meeting new people, and have a passion for history, architecture...and gardening!
