This characterful house is situated in the heart of a buzzy (well - in the evenings) Andalucian pueblo blanco. When you open the front door you are in walking distance of a spectrum of bars and restaurants which range from the very local to the more high end (note this has no relation to the quality of the food). But its hilltop location, balcony, swimming pool and fabulous view encourage the feeling that you are in the middle of nowhere. So the beauty of this property for us was this best of both worlds quality- the conveniences of town and the beauty of the landscape.
The house is large and well equipped. It is the owners' former home and they still use it extensively so it has a very lived in feel. The speaker systems are tooled up for external devices so once logged onto the wi fi we had quality sound. Digital TV has UK stations and the projector in the pool/games room is pre-plugged into a DVD player although you can run your laptop also. The house is old and has been developed in stages over time so there are lots of nooks and crannies (e.g. the front room, poolside, balcony, courtyard and roof!) where people can hang out for some solo time.
As well as bars and restaurants the village offers some wonderful walks (the castle, the gorge, the wild swimming lake, campsite barbecue on Saturday nights), supermarkets and day trips (train to Ronda, drive to beach at Tarifa, Soto Grande Sunday market).
The hosts are marvellous. Angel attended in person to show us round the house and at first we thought this was a little odd. But once we met him we relaxed and understood. He has not let the house out very often and he wanted to personally walk us through how the house works (e.g. coffee machine and under floor cooling) and show us round. He is very friendly and very interesting and after a few beers we were friends. He led us on a brief "tapas-crawl" and left us with enough local know how to last us two weeks. He was constantly available throughout our stay - we only needed to speak to him once or twice but on each occasion his response time was impressive. We didn't have the pleasure of meeting Jennifer but if she's Angel's partner she must be cool.
I hope and expect we will return to this wonderful house. Perhaps in winter(difficult to picture that central cooker fired up and burning). It is a slightly "different" holiday from the standard "villa in the middle of nowhere" model. Although JDF is far from undiscovered neither is it on the tourist trail and we feIt we got a sample of Spanish village life. My only word of caution would be that it may not work well for very young children. Many of the qualities which make it a delight for adults would conspire against toddlers.
Apart from that - fantastic.
