Our cosy Studio for 2 nestles on the edge of woodland, yet only 5 mins away from Shaftesbury in Dorset. Wake up to bird song, go for long walks right from the door step, explore many nearby attractions, enjoy a meal or drink on the private terrace.
This self contained, modern & comfortable studio annex as its own entrance with private terrace and outdoor space. The property sits in an area of outstanding natural beauty, nestled on the hillside on the edge of ancient woodland. The property is set in 1 acre of wildlife gardens in a quiet hamlet just 5 minutes drive from the historic hill town of Shaftesbury on the border between Dorset and Wiltshire.
We are located about 1.5miles outside Shaftesbury in a small hamlet on the edge of the woods.
The Studio has a very comfortable King size bed, well equipped kitchenette, sitting & dining area, small shower room with basin and toilet, and a walk-in wardrobe/storage. Ideal for walking holidays and short breaks. The studio is well located if you want to visit the End of the Road Festival or Larmer Tree Festival.
The kitchenette is well equipped, including full size fridge with freezer compartment, microwave combo oven with grill, 2 plate induction hob, kettle, toaster and extractor fan.
The Studio is ideal for individual travellers, close friends or couples (we welcome all couples!). We also accommodated parents with babies, but you will need to bring your own cot. Please note that children need to be supervised in the garden!
There is a 42" TV with Freesat and DVD player, free Wifi Internet connection (although this can sometimes be slow or disrupted because of our rural location - we can therefore not guarantee the internet service) and stereo speakers for plugging in your iPod or MP3 Player. A selections of DVDs, games and books are available.
Outside is a picnic table and BBQ. You can view the many different birds on the bird feeders, stroll around the wild gardens or sit in one of several quiet benches around the garden. Please note that we basically live in the woods, so there is no view from the Studio terrace. However, guests are welcome to stroll to the end of the garden and enjoy some views from the bench.
There is a well stocked village store only 2 miles away in the village of Ludwell, a small grocery store at the petrol station 1 mile away. In Shaftesbury you will find a large Tesco superstore and a lovely town centre with interesting shops and cafés including some very nice food shops. There's a market on Thursday mornings.
Shaftesbury is famous for its Gold Hill (from the Hovis Bread ad), it's Abbey, historic buildings and the amazing views across the Blackmore Vale. Salisbury is only 35mins drive to the east and Bath an hour north. An hours drive will also get you to some of the most stunning beaches of the Jurrasic Coast.
We have created our house and the Studio as environmentally friendly as possible. We have solar panels to help heat the water and Solar PV to generate electricity. Rainwater is collected and feeds the toilets in the house. We use environmentally friendly cleaning materials and recycle and compost. The Studio is extremely well insulated and has central heating.
What makes our place unique is the location. You will be right at the edge of the woods. Deer and badgers sometimes visit the garden and we have an abundance of different birds including Woodpeckers, Long Tail Tits, Jays, Song Thrushes and Bull Finches. You will find some wonderful walks (short and long) right on your doorstep. Yet we are only a 5 minute drive from Shaftesbury, Dorset which has an good selections of shops, a small Coop and a large Tesco. The Jurassic Coast (Poole, Studland, Weymouth) or Bath are within an hours drive.
We run a non-smoking property, but you are welcome to smoke outside. Just leave your cigarette butts in the receptacle provided outside your entry door.
We have a dog ourselves, so know how difficult it is to find accommodation that allows dogs. As the Studio is only a one-room accommodation, it is not suitable for very large dogs. But if you do want to bring a small dog, please ask and we will consider it. We also have a cat. She's basically an outdoor cat, but she likes to manipulate guests to let her into the Studio. You should know this if you're allergic to cats, as we cannot guarantee that the Studio doesn't contain allergens. Also if you do not want her in your room, just chuck her out and keep the windows open only a small gap at night, as otherwise you might receive an unwanted visitor.
Guest have their own patio and outside area with picnic table and BBQ. Guests are also welcome to explore the gardens at their own risk. There are various benches where one can enjoy the birds or read a book, but the property is on a slope and care must be taken as some path or slopes may be slippery. Parking is right next to the Studio.
Interaction with guests
We're happy to interact with guests as much as they would like. We like to get to know who's staying with us and enjoy giving tips about what to do in the area. But we also completely respect our guests' wishes for privacy, so we interact as much as or little as our guests desire. We do live on site and are here most of the time. The Studio is completely self-contained and guests will receive a code for the key safe before their arrival so they can check in and out without the need for us to be present.
Other things to note
The Studio is suitable for a maximum of 2 people. Babies and children are welcome, but we don't provide a cot. An air mattress and additional bedding is available at request and a surcharge of £10 per night. If you want to come with friends or a family, consider renting both our Studio and our Eco Glamping Pod together. Check out our other property.
Please be aware that there is no hall between the studio and the shower/toilet room. Some guests find that this doesn't give enough privacy.
We can accommodate small dogs (there just isn't enough space for large ones). But please ask beforehand. There is a extra charge of £5 per night for dogs. No cats allowed.
Please note that we are an eco-property. We save energy wherever we can, all cleaning materials are eco-friendly and we don't use any chemicals inside the house or in the garden. This has a few consequences you may want to know before renting:
1. Our towels and bedding are air-dried. We don't use fabric softener or a tumble driers, which means towels may not be as soft as you might expect. We only iron the pillows, not the sheets.
2. We have an abundance of wild life, including insects. Spiders are an important part of this eco-system and keep other bugs at bay. We therefore do not kill spiders, but will remove them from the Studio before guests arrive. However, they are quick to move back in and rebuild their webs within hours. If you find a spider or spiderwebs in the Studio, it is not a sign of lack of cleanliness, but something that just happens in an environmentally friendly house in the woods. Furthermore, wasps may feed on the untreated cedar cladding on the outside, colonies of ladybirds may hibernate in window frames in the winter.
Please leave the Studio the way you find it. We don't expect you to do a major clean, as the place is cleaned between occupancies. But please clean and tidy away your dishes. Empty the fridge and take your rubbish outside to the bins provided. We do appreciate you stripping the bed and putting the towels into a pile on the floor but that is not a requirement. Please leave by 11am on the day of departure unless otherwise agreed.
BBQ: There is a small BBQ and you will also find firelighters, please organise your own charcoal. Please do NOT opperate the BBQ or any disposal BBQ on the wooden decking as it can cause burns and fire. Keep it on the grass!
Dogs: We allow a small dog with prior arrangement. If you want to bring your dog, please check with us first before booking. If we have agreed for you to bring your dog, please keep him on a lead in the garden. We have very friendly wildlife, including a resident pheasant and don't want it to be disturbed. Bring a bed for your dog, or if you want your dog on the bed, please bring your own bedding or a blanket to cover the bed. Please also always clear up after your dog, both on our property and in the lane. Thank you!
The Studio is non-smoking. You're welcome to smoke outside, just make sure your butts are well extinguished and placed in the receptacle provided outside.
Make sure all windows are closed and the door locked when you go out.
We run an eco-friendly property. We harvest our rain water to flush the toilets, we generate hot water and electricity via solar panels and the heating is an energy efficient airsource heatpump. Therefore we'd like to invite you to use water, heat and electricity conscientiously without compromising your comfort and enjoyment of your stay.

My husband, Neil and I have a passion for wildlife and eco-friendly living and this is what we would like to share with our visitors through making our annex studio for 2 available. We like simplicity but comfort when we travel and hope that you will find the same when staying at the Coppice Studio Retreat. I am a raw nutrition coach and integrative nutrition coach, and Neil is a photographer and designer. We like to get to know our guests and are happy to help where ever we can. But if you prefer to be left alone, we'll be happy to do that too.
