Amazing apartment in an amazing location. If you're looking to get away and be close to the surf at Playa Maderas this place is perfect. 20 mins drive from San Juan for bars and restaurants. Will definitely return.

Dunia was a wonderful host, warm, friendly and helpful. She bought the land a few years ago and since then has built the houses from scratch using natural materials. They have a feeling of a New York loft apartment in the middle of the jungle! There is a real feeling of nature, care and love in the place. Although there is no outdoor space, we didn't miss it. You can open the wooden walls so that you feel you are outside and enjoy the sea breeze and views across the trees. The neighbourhood was quiet and safe. Casa Dunia is a 2 minute walk from the beach and a couple of beach bars (one does lovely smoothies). There is a fruit and veg lorry that passes twice a week nd you can catch a shuttle in to San Juan for food shopping, cafes etc but we thought Playa Madreas is the nicer beach, with amazing sunsets!

Dunia is a inspiratonal woman who created an inspiring place! It's a nest in the trees. A fantastic beach is an easy walk away. Great places to eat are right down the road. A fun shuttle goes to town several times a day. We rode horses, hiked to amazing vistas, played in the water and chilled inside resting in the hammock while looking at the greenest scenery. Dunia's knowledge of the area added greatly to the experience.

Where to begin? First, Dunia, as a host and person is one of the most kind, caring, and considerate people I have ever met. She saved my vacation from myself! I went to Nicaragua and Playa Maderas to learn how to surf better, but on my first day out realized that I had come with some more seriously injured ribs from a mountain bike crash a couple of weeks earlier than I had realized. Paddling was too painful and I allowed myself to entertain the idea of leaving early (I'm from NYC and not used to just relaxing in uh one of the most beautiful places I've ever been...haha). Dunia was sympathetic and tried to get me to consider other activities to do while I healed, believing more than me that I would heal and get back in the water before the end of my three weeks there. It took me a day to realize that I was in paradise and was staying with someone who genuinely cared and knew that her beautiful village and country would win over and soften my hardened NYC exterior. I spent a wonderful week doing yoga/meditating, eating fresh fruits and vegetables from the local grocery truck that comes to town twice a week, practicing my limited Spanish with Dunia, and generally letting go and allowing myself to relax and heal. It worked! I was back in the water and having a great time in Playa Maderas perfect waves. I met a lot of very cool people, from locals, to fellow tourists and expats living the dream. Dunia took myself and some fellow guests to the nearest town of San Juan Del Sur for an afternoon shopping excursion and in turn we went out with her and some friends to dinner one night later in the trip to a really nice restaurant in Playa Maderas. Dunia is great company and is fun to be around. Additionally she is a great masseuse and works with a friend who also has magic fingers which comes in handy after surfing for days. One last word of praise for Dunia, which will dovetail into the casita and her place in general. She built her place from the ground up with an inspiring amount of hard work, foresight, and determination. Maybe she will tell you her whole backstory which is truly motivational to follow ones dreams, she has and continues to do so. Now on to her home. I stayed in the top floor casita which is a perfect combination of beautiful and comfortable. Again, she designed and helped build her entire place from the ground up with hard work and a creative attention to details. It's all beautiful tropical woods, clean pored concrete floors, massive screened in doors and windows that open out onto the lush surrounding jungle and allow for cool breezes to stream through the rooms. Even when you are inside you feel like you are outside. There's lots of light and you go to bed with...

Dunia is a diamond in the jungle with a beating heart. Her place is a perfect tree house, the perfect distance from the beach, so comfortable and right. The more time we spent there, the better it was.

Dunia's place was fantastic, and perfect for our Nicaraguan surfing getaway. The house is plenty big enough for two people, good kitchen for cooking, and best of all just a minutes walk from the Playa Maderas beach. Especially excellent for surfing, and close to where the bus to San Juan del Sur picks up. Dunia was a great host, helpful and communicative with whatever we needed - taxis, restaurant recommendations, directions. Hope to make it back to Nicaragua soon, and would definitely recommend this spot.

I love to live at the beach, in my beautiful country Nicaragua and wake up with the sound of the ocean, the monkeys, and the birds. I like cooking and share a cold glass of hibiscus tea with people who comes to visit me, and make them feel like at home away from home!
I am a massage therapist, and love teaching surfing.
