The space

Hostels are rising in popularity, and for good reason! You'll get to meet with new people who love many of the same things you do and compare travel stories. One of the biggest draws of a Hostel is saving money on sleeping arrangements so you can put more into your real adventure.

We love to accommodate all this! We have people from all over the United States and a surprising number of guests from around the world. Our favorite part is the knowing where you are from so PLEASE pin our map and help us improve our story.

Guest access

You'll be very close to Rockwood Mill Shoppes; find anything additional you need there.
While visiting the area you'll be only in the Laurel Highlands and only a few minutes from landmarks like,
Flight 93 Memorial,
Quecreek Mine Rescue Site,
Fallingwater,
Johnstown Flood Museum,
and all the historic farms and nature walks

Interaction with guests

We LOVE to interact but only when YOU want. Because we spend most of our time at Rockwood Mill Shoppes, we'll see you at check in and check out but beyond that, you're mostly on your own.
If you want, we'd love to hear your stories while you have a cuppa' joe at the Mill Shoppes!

THE GOOD: The price is definitely affordable. The facilities are well-maintained and very clean. There are three bathrooms, each with shower, toilet, and sink. There was also plenty of hot water. I travel along I-76 through Pennsylvania frequently and Rockwood is relatively close - only a little bit out of my way. There's a shop two doors down from the hostel that serves pretty good food at reasonable prices. Apparently it works in tandem with the hostel because that's where you check in. EVERYTHING else was closed when I arrived (a Sunday at around 6pm), so I was very glad I that store was open because it was my only option for dinner! THE BAD: Hidden fees. Nowhere in the description does it say it costs extra if you want a blanket or a towel. The hostel's website states this, but not their airbnb description. All expenses must be made very clear up front! There are train tracks about 100 feet behind the house - and they are LOUD! I woke up every time one passed, and always got back to sleep until the one at 4:30am. The mattresses were extremely thin and you can feel every metal bar beneath them. Since there were only a few people in the hostel the night I stayed, I ended up borrowing two other mattresses and piling them on top of each other. This fixed the metal bar problem, but created a new one in that the centers of the mattresses were much more flexible than the edges. In other words, the center was several inches lower than the perimeter. This was an improvement over the single mattress, but it wasn't exactly comfortable. OVERALL: For travelers on a strict budget, the Hostel on Main is a viable option. It's not a bad place to stay, but I think in the future I would rather spend a few extra bucks to get something a little nicer.

Pleasure to meet you! I'm Judy and I own the Hostel on Main. I'm thrilled to meet people from all over the world. I never imagined I would have such an exciting group of guests when I opened the hostel, 6 years ago, but I can 't imagine ever going back.

I love restoring old buildings to something current and beautiful, as you can see from my other properties. While you are here, check Rockwood Mill Shoppes, where you can shop for local and American made products. I also own and restored the Rockwood Opera House which was originally built in 1902 but I restored 15 years ago to be an entertainment venue. You can visit a show while staying in my Hostel! I also love old "stuff" so my husband and I opened an Antique Shoppe which you'll stay right beside!
