Our 1880 homestead cabin is a dry cabin with no electricity, bedding or running water. Please bring your own bedding, water and basic camping supplies along with firewood if you'd like a fire. Check in by 8pm mountain time.

The space

This is the real deal folks. Just like the homesteaders slept during the westward movement in the 1880's, you too can experience what it's like to be a homesteader out on the prairie. Be like Laura Ingalls and let the song of the coyotes lull you to sleep. Our cabin sits miles away from any other building out on the edge of the White River in the South Dakota Badlands on our family run Circle View Guest Ranch. It's a genuine experience you'll never forget! Just a 6 mile drive to the main headquarters of Badlands National Park.

Please reserve the cabin ONLY if you can arrive by our strictly enforced check-in time 3pm-9pm Mountain Time. It’s very important that you arrive at the ranch before dark in order to locate the cabin and get unpacked and settled before dark. The place can be tricky to find in the dark and can seem a bit daunting if you’re not able to see the area during daylight. If you have any concerns about not being able to arrive before dark, please consider other lodging options.

Guest access

While this listing is for the 1880 camping cabin, we have several other lodging options here at the ranch including rooms at the B&B with private bathrooms and a full ranch breakfast, simple rooms at the bunkhouse and 2 pet-friendly modern cabins.

Interaction with guests

Hosts live on property and can be contacted till 9pm.

Other things to note

Please bring your own bedding, water, basic camping supplies and firewood.

Where to begin... we had read reviews below where guests had said one night wasn't enough... so we booked three, and still found leaving hard. An amazing place: silent, private, right in nature. Sunrises over the river in front of the house, and coyotes shouting at night. It felt very safe, and is only a fifteen minute drive from the entrance to the Badlands. It is also on the edge of Pine Ridge Reservation, so a lot of Native American culture and heritage. The cabin is more spacious than it looks in the pictures, felt very clean, especially given its age, and had a great porch and rocker. There were also two beds. Amy and Phil were excellent at all stages of booking and communication, and gave us a delicious breakfast on our first morning. A really unusual place and a great base for exploring everything the area has to offer.

We had a really great night in the cabin! It's in such an amazingly beautiful setting, a mile away from the Amy and Phil's farm, by the river. It's really comfortable inside, we cooked our dinner on a camping stove we bought with and went to bed listening to the coyotes yipping in the fields. Its so close to Badlands National park that you can spend all day there and not have to worry about a drive home at the end of the day, and has a store selling everything you could possibly need in scenic, which is a 3 minute drive. Thanks for having us!

The experience in the cabin was great. We loved the rural location and the warmth of the fire; the inside stove kept us warm through the cold night. Amy was really friendly and helpful during check in and even let us have some eggs from their chickens. We wish we had more water with us as there was none from the pump but we still had a great night.

Staying at the Old Homestead with Amy & Phil has been one of the highlights of our trip so far: no electricity = no work emails, just enjoying sunset at dusk, the amazing stars at night - and the fab breakfasts at the ranch in the morning. Very recommended...

Definitely ranks as one for the books for unique experiences! The title is no joke- this place is primitive, so be ready for an experience similar to camping. Not for the faint of heart of you are not comfortable with sleeping in the outdoors (no problem for me at all, girlfriend wasn’t as fond...lol). I was going to rate this as 4 stars because with that being said , I did feel the price was a little on the high side for such a desolate spot..but after a fantastic breakfast with Phil and Amy and their family the next morning I will say it’s every bit of a 5 star experience. Hosts were awesome, and have an entire family history to the ranch. I 100% recommend the breakfast with them back at their B&B, totally made the stay for me

The cabin was great, a step up from camping and the kids loved learning how people use to live. The property was amazing, totally secluded and we enjoyed the river. We will definitely be back!

Staying at the homestead was one of the best experiences I have ever had. The sunrise and sunsets where breathtaking. The cabin was just what we needed to get unplugged. Breakfast was something to look forward to every morning. The only regret is that we didn't stay one more night!
