About this listing

Located in a quiet backwater with wonderful views and country walks in ancient woodland and nearby grand estates, yet only a couple of miles from the A303 with easy access to London. Local highlights are the Hauser & Wirth Gallery and other spots in the increasingly hip town of Bruton 4 miles away as well as Longleat Safari Park (9 miles) and the beautiful Stourhead (NT, 2 miles). Ideal for a spring break to enjoy the beauty of the local scenery or simply to relax in our beautiful surroundings!

The space

A newly converted stables block incorporating the character of the old flint and stone walls, yet with all modern luxuries such as a wood burning stove, eco electric radiators, duck down and feather duvets and leather sofas.
Situated right on The Macmillan Way which runs 290 miles from Boston in Lincolnshire to Abbotsbury in Dorset.

Guest access

Acres of fields to walk in, as well as local woodlands with a huge selection of footpaths, tracks and bridle paths. Guests also have access to the Tennis Court and are welcome to visit the large pond in the garden. Although the owners accommodation is on the same site, guests have the privacy of their own seating area in front of the Old Stables.

Interaction with guests

We are available on site if we are needed as we live in the farmhouse next door and we are always happy to help your holiday go smoothly. We do not impose ourselves upon our guests!

The neighbourhood

The locality is generally quiet, however Somerset is the home of cheese making, with several award winning cheddars such as Wykes, Barbers, Keanes and Godminster made nearby, along with local Cider. The world famous Glastonbury Festival is held 10 nearby, whilst both Bath and Wells are a short distance away with a wealth of attractions. Quirky towns like Frome, Shaftesbury and Castle Cary are on your doorstep, and the seaside at both Lyme Regis and Burnham on Sea are both approx 30 miles distant. Several National Trust houses are in the vicinity, the closest Stourhead only 3.5 miles away, and Alfred's Tower just 2.5 miles away.

Getting around

Car required, although extensive walks are available from the Old Stables through the woods to Stourhead and Alfred's Tower.

Other things to note

Due to the remoteness of the Old Stables and our own house nearby, our internet service is through satellite broadband rather than cable or BT line. Speeds and service quality vary considerably, and satellite broadband is no good for high speed gaming or similar. Please don't book if fast and reliable broadband is a must for you!

The television does not have an integral DVD player but it does have a USB port, if films are your thing I suggest you download your films onto a USB stick and bring them along with you.

Access to the property and facilities is available only to the booked party and permission must be sought from the owners prior to inviting additional guests to use the facilities.

Lovely clean and well equipped accommodation in a beautiful part of the English countryside. We were looking for time away to spend time together with our teenage children and had a wonderful opportunity to do that here. The location is remote and in the farming countryside. Lots of places to explore.... And all accommodating of having the family dog in tow. Wendy is a very friendly, relaxed and informative host.

We had a lovely stay in the cottage over New Year. The cottage is cute and comfortable and was cosy, especially once we got the fire going. The location is secluded with some nice countryside walks possible straight from the cottage, and it's well located within a half hour drive of most of Somerset's attractions. There was a bottle of Cava awaiting us upon arrival in the fridge, which was much appreciated. I would recommend the cottage to anyone looking for some peace and quiet and time in nature or a romantic getaway. Wifi is a bit patchy, as is the TV signal, so it's a good idea to take some DVDs - we took an HDMI lead and external DVD drive and ran movies off our laptops, which worked well. Overall, we had a lovely time.

I am sorry to hear that you had some issues with the Internet......had you mentioned this whilst you were here we may have been able to assist with this. I had thought we had given an honest overview of the erratic nature of getting broadband up here but have now rewritten the blurb. We have however, never previously received any issues with the television reception nor any reports of such so we will also now look into this. I am glad these things did not detract from the quality of the cottage.

Wendy's cottage is a lovely little bolt hole out in the middle of nowhere (but not too out in the middle of nowhere!) Starting with the cottage itself, it was clean, well presented, warm, comfortable and well appointed in terms of facilities. The Kitchen had lots of plates and cutlery, a big dishwasher, excellent hob and oven, plenty of fridge and freezer space and a decent kettle and toaster, all top things on my wish list for a comfy stay. In addition the shower has excellent pressure, lots of space and plenty of hot water, also all big things on my list. Bedrooms were spacious enough with again sufficient storage and felt cosy and comfortable. We also loved the open plan living space which was perfect for the three of us and could cover four with similar comfort. The facilities were great also and Wendy was always happy to take the cover off the pool for us even when our 7 year old fancied a dip in the rain. The tennis court was an added bonus which we made great use of. Just be aware that there is a property rule that any guests not on the original booking, are not allowed to use any of the facilities, be they individual or otherwise. Wendy is a very welcoming and helpful host, with lots of helpful information. She was really quick in responding to any of our messages. We always felt that she was on hand to help if we needed anything which was great but she also left us our privacy.

We were delighted to stay with Wendy. It is a beautiful part of England we had not explored before, and Wendy could not have been more welcoming. Our two young girls absolutely loved Wendy and all her pets and animals and were delighted to be there. It is stunning countryside, and so much to do and see there. We will be back!!
