Charlie Chaplin built this enchantingly cozy historic cottage surprisingly near the biggest intersection at the most central point of the city. Equidistant to everywhere. And Rudolph Valentino called it home!

NEWS! The pinpoint generated by AirBnB's map system is off by a few blocks. This listing is on Poinsettia Place just south of Fountain Avenue.
One of the most notable gems in Los Angeles' vintage charm is this jungle-drenched grouping of cottages built by Charlie Chaplin in the 1920s as a very centrally-located village for his crewmen.
This particular second story wood-paneled loft has been called home by such greats as Rudolph Valentino, and with its ceiling beams, built-in nooks and bay window overlooking a fairy-lit courtyard, it has the feel of a Swiss chateau or Yosemite lodge.
The queen-sized bed has a removed-from-the-world feel with a window that overlooks gnome rooftops and exotic trees and palms, and the windowseat couch (and additional fold-out cot) can be used as further sleeping space for those that like to wake to sunlight.
There is one bathroom with a tiled shower and hand-built shelves. There is an office tuck reminiscent of a writer's retreat cove, and a unique decorative fireplace filled with candle pillars to really cement the cozy feel.
The kitchen is well-equipped for gourmet fun, with the exception of a microwave and dishwasher (we keep it trendily old-fashioned here). In place of a TV, there is a projector that easily connects to a laptop, a hanging screen, and DVD player left for your use in the closet. There are also historic landmark sports bars (Formosa, Jones) just down the block for any shows or games you might be used to watching.
There is a laundry hut past "The Shire" gardens with a washer/dryer that is a dollar in quarters per load. And if you're into memorable dinner parties, there is an additional fold-out table for eight that hides beside the fridge for entertaining larger groups than the built-in breakfast area would sit.
Romantic is the name of the game around here, whether it's ten friends, two lovebirds, a family, or just you needing a place to unwind!
Other cottages in this fairytale of a Shire have housed many familiar names, from Marilyn Monroe (across the courtyard in the princess turret bedroom with slot windows) to now-a-days Patrick Dempsey.
Giving the mood of a European get-away, the complex's architecture boasts hand-cut stable doors, wood beams, bespoke windows (some with large Tiffany stained-glass scenes), and medieval-style staircases with oxidized copper rooster wind-turns atop white-washed towers.
The village is tucked away behind a wooded gate on a tree-lined street a surprising few minutes from the hustle and bustle. There is one of every grocery store within three blocks, and to be in the grid of Santa Monica Blvd / Sunset / Melrose & Fairfax / La Brea is an unbeatable location as per proximity to anything. Public transit buses whiz down SMB every few minutes. Maximum twenty minutes of drive time to every corner of Los Angeles, too.
As this will be like staying at a lived-in fully-furnished pal's place (I will be leaving all my amenities as-is in the bathroom and kitchen and closet), you can of course take full advantage of my two surfboards, tennis racket (at the court up the street), office supplies, and art buckets if you feel so inspired! I will leave one spacious rack open in the walk-in closet for your use, too. I simply ask that if you use anything, there is a notepad provided to add it to a list, just so I know to replace it for myself or future guests.
Lastly, the courtyard is bountiful with a hearty BBQ set-up and plenty of tables and chairs, but as this is common space, please do respect it as such and leave it perhaps better than you found it if enjoyed. :)
WiFi and street parking are of course included.

Should you want more host attention, just say the word! Otherwise I tend to think guests appreciate a more hands-off "this is your house while you're here" attitude. :)

Annie's place is a treasure ... and she was very gracious to accommodate me on such short notice ... hope to come back again soon !
Annie's cottage was the shining star of my trip. Cozy, comfortable--it was a dream. Also great neighborhood, very central!
The place is lovely, rustic, great location to experience the Hollywood extravaganza yet safe, comfortable, and kid friendly.
Annie's cottage could not have been more perfect. I stayed there with 3 friends for a long weekend, and we hardly wanted to leave to explore LA because we adored the space. We were enchanted from the moment we walked through the gate. The unit has a tree house/Snow White/woodland charm, as does the rest of the property. In a word, it was magical! Annie was very responsive, and very thorough. We loved it, and will most certainly try to book this every time we return to LA!
We had such a nice time at the Shire. It's a cozy and comfortable home with tons of charm. The location is perfect and walking distance to coffee, grocery stores, food, etc. the neighbors are a delight as we got to know quite a few of them by just hanging out in the courtyard. I will definitely stay at Annie's again
This is why I love Airbnb, places like this, this fun-sized cottage. The space is so odd, you really feel every corner of it. The shower's sideways and about as big as an envelope. The bed is up near the ceiling and you have to climb a ladder to reach it. You can sit on pillows near the window and look out onto the courtyard. Quite simply, there's no place like it.
Annie was super helpful, responding immediately when I arrived and had trouble finding the key. She sent me a picture, and when I found the key it was right where it was supposed to be.
This is such a lovely space. Totally unique and charming. Annie was great to deal with. Will definitely recommend to friends. Martyn
Annie's hospitality is great, she'll make sure you get all your needs met and plus I've had a wonderful stay at the cottage.
This was great experience. I would definitely stay here again.
My friend and I had a great stay in this unique and cozy apartment. It was only for one night, but I would definitely stay there again.
