The space

Situated along the Eastern coast of Sardinia and the Golfo di Orosi’s coastline, Cala Gonone provides access to about 25 miles of pristine beaches. The town’s port offers a launch pad for boat excursions that take you to incredible cliffs and hidden coves that can’t be accessed otherwise—the perfect setting for a private, romantic jaunt to a magical place.

If you’re looking for a relaxing day with incredible views of the Mediterranean Sea, this isolated, picturesque place provides exactly the refreshment you’re seeking. If you’re an adventure-seeker, you can get plenty of satisfaction spending the day in Cala Gonone, as well; the stunning cliffs aren’t only good for sight-seeing, but for rock climbing. Cala Gonone is known as one of the primary rock-climbing areas in Sardinia.

Other things to note

It’s not difficult to find a stunning beach on Sardinia, but finding one that caters for families on a modest budget is more of a challenge. Cala Gonone ticks all of the right boxes. White pebble-and-sand beaches, with sun loungers and parasols for rent, calm, turquoise waters for swimming and snorkelling, a long seafront promenade lined with low-key trattorias – and none of the bling that accompanies the glitzier Costa Smeralda to the north. When the charms of Cala Gonone’s two small but perfectly formed beaches pall, there are daily boat trips to the Bue Marino caves and more remote beaches, such as Cala Luna and Cala Fuili, further south.

We very much enjoyed our stay. This is a pleasant apartment ideal for a family of 4 or 5. The kitchen is well equipped and we were able to cook family meals throughout our stay. It is in a quiet residential area, but we could walk down to the marina and tourist area in 10-15 minutes, passing a couple of small children's play areas and a place to enjoy a coffee or buy ice cream. There were several small supermarkets although food was more expensive than in larger towns. There was plenty of parking near to the apartment and around town. We did not have to pay for parking anywhere during our visit which was a bonus. We enjoyed our breakfast and evening meals on the outside veranda which has lovely views over the town and bay. It was also a great place to dry washing on the airer that is included. During our stay we drove or walked to some fantastic quiet beaches where we particularly enjoyed snorkeling to look at many fish although in most places the sand is a little coarse for sand castles. We would recommend the whole day boat trip along the coast to visit the Bue Marino caves and several beautiful beaches, although these were busy even in May and the ride back in the afternoon sea breeze was quite exhilarating. On our drive over from Cagliari we visited the archeological site of Santa Christa (bronze age well temple and tower). Paola was an excellent host and responded quickly to communication via Airbnb messages before and during our stay.

The apartment is in a good location, about a 10 min walk to the beach. There are two balconys both with superb views of the mountains and sea. Michela was really good at communicating with us during our stay.

Paolas apartment was really nice. It has a beautiful terrace with seaview and everything we needed to have a nice holiday. Altough Paola doesn't speak English, the communication was easy and she and her son Marco welcomed us with a bottle of wine the day we arrived. It's only a 10 minute walk to the seaside, where all the restaurants are, but the apartment itself is situated in a quiet street uphill. We enjoyed our holiday very much and would definitely recommend to stay at this lovely apartment.

Paola welcomed us personally and put some beer in the fridge which was convenient as we arrived on a sunday and no supermarkets were open in Cala Gonone, so great service from her part. Also, as we departed with the early morning boat from Olbia to Civitaveccia and had to leave at an unholy time, she was very forthcoming and trusting in letting us leave the appartment uninspected. The appartment is as comfortable and the view on the bay is as beautiful as advertised. However, the hill is quite steep. Cala Gonone is perfectly situated to do a lot of trips from, there are lots of sites to be visited from it by car. If you plan to have a beach holiday, please do consider that the descent from the appartment to the beach and especially the ascent back from the beach in summer temperatures requires some effort.

We enjoyed our stay at Paola's place. The apartment is very spacious and the view is amazing. The kitchen was also well equipped. However it got very hot in the apartment at night since there is no air conditioning.

The view is really nice from this top floor apartment. It is spacious and could fit 5 (if 2 are a couple) very comfortably. We washed clothes and the machine worked fine and the outside terrace is perfect for drying the clothes in the sun. Cala Gonone is a great base for seeing most of the top attractions in the area including Gola Su Gorrupu--a must see ! WIFI worked the best we have had so far. Beds are very comfortable and there are lots of amenities in the house, like comfy chairs for sitting on the terrace, We also checked in after 9 pm and the owners met us there with no problem and showed us the place. A very, very pleasant 4-night stay. Highly recommended!
