Our family of 4 adults just came home from a 2+ week stay in this beautiful, light-filled, comfortable, fragrant, and roomy apartment. A bottle of wine, Dutch treats, and the loveliest flower arrangements greeted us when we arrived (and lasted a long time).
The apartment's location is 1/2 a block from the Vondelpark, a large and wonderful green idyll through which you can walk to the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and MOCO in about 25 minutes. It's a wonderland with cafés, playgrounds, wooded paths to ride bikes or walk or skate, expansive lawns for picnics, exercise, and frisbee, and multitudes of Pokèmon Go players.
The apartment is also near the #1 streetcar, which will take you directly to the Centraal Rail Station in about 20 minutes.
There are 2 places to rent bikes nearby (and cheaper than in the center): OttoBikes and Second Life Bikes, both on Overtoomstraat. The bike paths of Amsterdam are a marvel. Be alert to cyclists passing you on the right without warning, and of Vespas passing on the left.
The Oud West neighborhood is not in the center of Amsterdam; architecture is early 20th C, it's less touristy, not crowded, calmer. That said, it was not exactly quiet either. We had all the windows open to catch the breezes in the summer heat, so naturally heard construction and trash trucks, sirens, and motorcycles racing up Overtoomstraat.
The stairs of this apartment are an adventure: extremely steep, curving, a total of 63 steps from the street entrance to the top floor, in 4 flights. Not a problem if you always hold onto the railing and if you don't have super heavy luggage.
We enjoyed using the kitchen with its two sinks and gas stove/oven. Tiny fridge was perfectly adequate for the 4 of us. Washer worked well; the dryer didn't (but it should be fixed by now); there is a huge, collapsible drying rack and lots of hangers to have clothes dry in the windows. Vacuum cleaner, iron, ironing board, all manner of cleaning supplies on hand.
We appreciated how many spaces there were to relax, sit and read, including the lovely tiny terrace on the top level. Beds very comfortable. Great having a toilet on each floor. The view from the 3rd floor master bedroom was sweet-- onto a large leafy courtyard between apartment blocks, with apple trees and individual garden plots, a preschool, a few cats, and small green parrots.
We loved every minute of our stay at this apartment, and are pining for Amsterdam now that we are back home.
