The space

Set on a quiet and lush canyon, who would ever guess that you were in a large urban city! Although it's southern California and a car is very handy, this apartment is close to good public transit, either by trolley from San Diego State University, or a 5 minute walk to a rapid bus service to the downtown. It is close to all major freeways for anyone coming to San Diego for the zoo, beaches, the desert, and Mexico.
This self-contained apartment - with a bedroom, bathroom, living room and kitchen - occupies the ground floor of 4770 and has a separate and private entrance from 55th St. It looks out on a large and terraced backyard with a B-B-Q in which the travel weary can relax and "chill". It is the ideal deal for one traveler or a couple.

Guest access

Laundry facilities, back yard.

Interaction with guests

Guests can have as much - or little - interaction as they wish with me when I'm on site.

The neighbourhood

It's quiet and friendly, the sort of place where singles go running, couples walk their dog, and folks - generally - mind their own business.

Getting around

Yes. While SD is generally poor for public transit, there is a Rapid bus service to downtown at the end of 55th St, and the trolley has a station at San Diego State U - a 15-20 minute walk from 55th St.

Awesome host. Great experience for my first time using airbnb. Beautiful home and location is close to everything in San Diego. Very beautiful backyard and Peter is a wonderful host who makes sure ou have everything you need while you are in his rental. Next time I am in San Diego, I will definitely check in with Peter first.

Response from Peter:
First off, I very much appreciate these kind and thoughtful words. Because they were at Comecon, i didn't get a chance to get to know Adam and Susie as much as I would have like. But what contact we did have spoke a lot about what a delightful couple they were. They were appreciative of what was offered to them in terms of accommodation and breakfast, and respectful of the space offered to them. They left the apartment in immaculate condition! Needless to say, they - and anyone they would care to recommend - are more than welcome to sat here again with us!

Our stay with Peter was wonderful. My boyfriend and I had just moved to San Diego and stayed at his Canyon apartment hideaway for 5 weeks while we were looking for an apartment. Firstly, Peter is an exceptional host. He is a warm, kind, and caring person and it was a pleasure getting to know him. The apartment quickly became home and it has everything you could want! It is quite roomy, the bed and couch are extremely comfortable, TV and wifi work well, laundry is right up the stairs in the main house, and the kitchen is fully equipped. The patio/backyard area is also gorgeous -- lots of trees and places to relax. We definitely should have spent more time out there! As for logistical things, parking spaces were ample and the location is great, with easy access to good food and highways to major areas of San Diego. I actually liked that it was a little out of the way. It is close to SDSU but it is a quiet neighborhood with beautiful houses to look at! I would recommend this place to anyone who is visiting San Diego!

It's a review like this - with these very kind words coming from folks like Anna and Andy - that reminds me about why I like being an Airbnb host - or should I say "service provider". Rather than use the term "host", I use this latter term - which at first glance may strike one as a little clinical and distancing - for a particular reason. Having someone stay with one for a "holiday" - however much I enjoy the energy of folks when they are more relaxed - is a very different experience than having people stay who are in the midst of important life transitions. Having had a few in my time, I have some feeling for the curious mix of excitement and stress that usually accompanies a major move. For that reason it is an added treat to be helpful to folks like Anna and Andy. Because they were such a self-reliant and self-sufficient couple who made minimal demands on me as their host, all it seems that all I had to do was to provide a setting that is quiet and relaxed - and they were off and running ..! So you know that when folks who are so pro-active and self-motivating, it does not come from a place of frivolous need or entitlement. It then becomes a real pleasure to help them with what they need. Having the opportunity to socialize with Anna's parents as they visited to help this couple settle in to Diego was an added bonus. When parents are involved productively in the lives of their adult children, it is always a pleasure for me to see the precious value of positive parental support. All in all, it was a real treat for me to have Andy and Anna stay with me. I have no doubt they will thrive and prosper here in San Diego, and it gives me great satisfaction to know that the three of us who live here permanently and make up Airbnb - myself, Felix and Anh - played a small part in helping launch them in this part of their life adventure.
