This is a traditional Japanese House (Kominka) with nearly 100 years of history located in a quiet forest near Lake Saiko. This house uses a unique A-shaped sloping thatched roof, high quality natural cedar wood, and unique construction techniques, showing all the beautiful characteristics of early traditional Japanese architecture. In 2022, we carried out a partial restoration, hoping to preserve its beloved and historic architecture as possible and to add basic facilities and comfort.

The space
This traditional Japanese house (Kominka) has 2 floors and a courtyard. The first floor is about 126 square meters, the second floor is about 69 square meters, and the courtyard is about 150 square meters. Behind the building, we have a semi-open bath and BBQ yard.

1st floor and courtyard BBQ
The first floor, approximately 126 square meters, is mainly used for living and gathering. There is an elegant living room, a spacious tatami room, a renovated kitchen, a new handmade wooden staircase, a bathroom and two separate toilets, and classical cabinetry for your enjoyment and use. The tatami room, surrounded by engawa, is connected to a deck stretching into the courtyard. It is spacious and bright, great for relaxation or rest. You can enjoy the outdoor courtyard through the tatami mats and enjoy the outdoor scenery of the lake and mountains. The outdoor courtyard can be used for BBQ, and the equipment you need is provided.

Semi-open bath
This all-wood semi-open bath is located at the back of the building, passing through a Japanese stone path to reach this bath. The bath is equipped with a changing space, and a beautiful stone bathtub, spacious enough for family and friends to enjoy together. The bathtub is surrounded by natural grasses and flowers, and the Japanese wooden curtain design allows you to soak in peace while enjoying the outdoor breeze and the scent of grasses and trees for total relaxation.

2nd floor
The second floor is mainly a resting place, with a spacious Japanese-style bedroom, a corridor, and a sitting room for gathering. Through the window in the sitting room, you can enjoy the tranquility and beauty of nature with a distant view of Lake Saiko and hills.

Courtyard
The courtyard is about 150 square meters, planted with trees and flowers for all seasons. In spring and autumn, you can immerse yourself in the romance of cherry blossoms and maple leaves, and in summer there are exquisite and elegant purple sunflowers, and small yellow and green flowers on lacquer trees. In winter, in addition to the snow, you can also see the white fresh Chinese holly’s flowers.

Parking
Currently there are two places for parking. One is located next to the house for 2 vehicles. The other one is a free public temporary parking lot located 2 minutes walk away.

Other things to note
- No shoes in the all-wood bathhouse.
- The bath is surrounded by grasses and nature, and you might see bugs and dust.
- Please watch your steps when walking on the stone path.
- In order to present the elegant history of the home, we kept most of the wood structure. As a result, the original wood in some areas is slightly old, and some of the Japanese paper windows may not close completely.
- Due to the nature of the Lake Saiko area and the old wooden structure, we have done insect prevention treatment, but there will always be some insects entering the house. This happens more often during warm seasons.
- There are animals in the surrounding mountains and forests at night, so it is recommended to use a flashlight when you go out at night.
- Once you enter the entrance, you need to take off your shoes and change to indoor slippers.
- The interior of the house is made of original wood flooring and tatami mats, so heavy items and suitcases are strictly prohibited.
- As the original structure of the house has been preserved, many of the beams are at eye-level. You’ll need to pay particular attention to avoid hitting them.
- For your health and environmental protection, we do not provide cleaning services during your stay, such as changing towels, bed sheets and cleaning.
- We do not provide disposable items such as toothbrushes and toothpaste.
- Please be careful when walking up and down the stairs and in the corridor on the second floor, especially for children’s safety.
- The roof on the second floor retains the centuries-old natural thatch roof construction, some natural thatch may fall off
