Neighbourhood highlights

Luing is a small, beautiful island around 30 minutes’ drive from Oban and 2.5 hours’ drive from Glasgow airport . Oban is also easily reached by train and the route is deemed one of the most scenic journeys in the world, it is part of the world famous West Highland Line which also heads off to Mallaig via Glencoe and Fort William. Many of the trains have specially adapted areas to store bicycles.

One of Scotland’s Slate Isles, Luing has a rich history of quarrying and evidence of this industry is still visible today. However, it is now a rural and tranquil retreat perfect for exploring the surrounding area. The views from the island are considered to be some of the best on the west coast of Scotland.

At only 6 miles long and 1.5 miles wide, Luing is one of the most accessible islands on the west coast, the regular car and passenger ferry takes only around five minutes to cross over the 200m wide Cuan Sound (please check the current Cuan Ferry timetable.) For those travelling without a car, there is a regular bus service from Oban to the Cuan ferry slipway.
The island’s charm lies in its natural beauty and unspoilt, peaceful scenery which is easily explored on foot, by bicycle or by car. It is an excellent place for wildlife spotting with otters, hares, buzzards, peregrines and hen harriers all resident on the island. Seals, dolphins and porpoises are regularly spotted off the coast.

Luing cattle are a beef breed developed on the island by the Cadzow brothers in 1947. It was formed by first crossbreeding Beef Shorthorn with Highland cattle and then breeding the resulting progeny with Beef Shorthorns to produce an animal three quarters Beef Shorthorn, one quarter Highland. The breed of red-brown cattle are medium sized and extremely hardy. The idea was to produce a good beef cow with the ability to raise a calf under adverse weather conditions. It was officially recognised as a breed by the British government in 1965. The breed is still farmed today, mainly in Scotland but also in other areas of the world.

The island is the perfect place to unwind, enjoy nature and the magnificent sunsets seen from the west coast. Walking, cycling and water sports including wild swimming , coastal rowing, kayaking and sailing can all be enjoyed on the island and with access to the many activities on offer in Oban and the surrounding area, Shore Cottage is the ideal base for a self-catering holiday.

The village of Cullipool has a reputation for wonderful sunsets framed by the islands to the west. Cullipool houses the Atlantic Centre, a community run venture containing a café (opening hours vary, please check their website), history exhibitions and a shop where you can buy locally made crafts and books. Cullipool Village Hall also hosts regular events and it’s worth checking what is on during your stay.

As well as being the island’s Post Office, Luing Stores serves the island with a good selection of food and drink, including some local specialities, crafts, newspapers, gifts and cards.
Bike hire is available from Sunnybrae Caravan Park which is close to the ferry pier.

Toberonochy
The pretty, whitewashed cottages in the village of Toberonochy were built to house the slate miners of the past. The village is centred around an attractive village green where the road continues to the harbour, complete with slate beaches and piers, lobster pots and fishing gear.

Hi I'm Louise. I'm a busy bee working between teaching, my busy cafe and spending time on the Isle of Luing! I've lived in Soctland now for around 8 years and I love it! There are so many beautiful places to explore from beaches to mountains, cities to tiny villages and everything in between! Having travelled around Scotland for years, I decided my favourite area is Argyll and Bute, it really does have everything! Amazing scenery, good transport links, lots of visitor attractions as well as peace and tranquility. I also like to travel outside of Scotland too, in the past few years I've explored China, Iceland, Canada, the USA, many European countries and lots of the UK including the Lake District and London. I'm looking forward to upcoming adventures to Australia, Spain and South Africa. I love to cook and when I travel one of my favourite things is hunting around supermarkets looking for unusual ingredients as well as eating unusual things too! The craziest things I've eaten are zebra intestine (Africa) and chicken feet (China), my motto is I'll try anything once! I look forward to welcoming you to stay at Shore Cottage, and I hope you'll enjoy the peach and tranquility of the island as much as I do.
