This leads to a well equipped kitchen with electric cooker, microwave, fridge-freezer, dishwasher and washing machine. The cottage is heated by night storage heaters. Upstairs there is a double bedroom with a kingsize bed, a small desk and cupboard, and a twin room with desk and cupboard. There is a small bathroom with a shower over the bath.

Guest access

The Bothy is set in a mature garden which is full of rhododendrons and azaleas and mature trees. The cottage has a picnic table outside and guests are free to enjoy the garden and walk down to the waterfall. Dogs are welcome and there is plenty of room to run in but the garden is not completely fenced. If you come bringing bikes, we have a lockable garage that you can store the bikes in securely and a hose point to clean everything off at the end of the day.

Interaction with guests

The Bothy is part of a large L shaped building and our home is at the other end of the building separated by garages. We will respect your privacy but are available give recommendations and answer questions if you need help.
We have a dog who is very friendly to people and visiting dogs.

The neighbourhood

Many of our guests spend a whole week out walking as there are so many walks to enjoy from the cottage, from climbing the 10 Munroes nearby to gentle riverside walks. From the cottage it is possible to take the Coulin pass over to the Torridon mountain range which is spectacular and there are plenty of coastal walks locally. The Lair river runs through the garden and has a picturesque waterfall. There are many possible trips from the cottage, the Isle of Skye is around 45 minutes away, Eileen Donan castle is about 45 minutes, the stunning Applecross Peninsula is also approximately 45 minutes away, over the dramatic mountain pass Bealach na Bà, which has wonderful views to Skye and the Cullin Hills from the top. There are also opportunities to climb, cycle, kayak and fish locally. The local gardens of Attadale are 20 minutes away and you can also visit the renowned gardens at Inverewe which is further away. The Brochs at Glen Elg are also well worth a visit. There is also a small Golf course in Lochcarron the nearby village.

Getting around

There is amble parking outside the cottage in front of the garages. If you don't want to use your car the Bothy is next to Achnashellach station. Trains from here go in the direction of Kyle of Lochalsh and Inverness. The village of Lochcarron is 7 miles away you will find a bank, a well stocked Spar shop, hotel, bistro, cafe, golf course, garage and petrol station. There are several excellent restaurants a short drive away.

Other things to note

We will provide directions and a code for the key box so you can arrive whenever suits you best and we will be available during the first evening in case you have any questions. Our regular change over day is Saturday, please arrive after 4pm and depart by 10am at the end of your stay. We provide the essentials as well as, towels, washing up liquid, tea towels and cleaning materials. We include electricity and provide ample logs to get you started. More logs can be bought in the village. There is a short track from the main road to the entrance gate which is an unmade road, it is rough and not ideal for low cars. It is not unmanageable but is worth knowing about before hand.
The Bothy is a hundred yards from Achnashellach railway station and some guests have stayed without a car. This is feasible if you come prepared. Guests have scheduled a Tesco food delivery to arrive while the cottage is being prepared which has worked well just let us know if this would help. If you want to hire a car locally for a day or two this is possible from Lochcarron Garage. The train to Kyle of Lochalsh or Plockton is then best for transport to shops and places to eat, Note that there are no shops or pubs etc. within walking distance of The Bothy - just mountains!
