Pebbles - en suite shower room, double bed, views of Lyme Bay, Jurassic coast and glorious sunsets.
Check in time is between 4.30pm and 6.30pm.
If you wear slippers, bring them, as outdoor shoes are left downstairs, Poppy-dog won't eat them!

Christina is a picture framer, if you've a picture you'd like framed, bring it along, I offer a 24 hour framing service

The space

Tucked behind the sea wall in Chesil Cove you will find Mariners Cottage, a quirky, cosy cottage with murals painted on the outside depicting traditional fishing and old Portland architecture, the inside has lots of character, with beamed ceilings, half panelled walls, exposed Portland stone and decorated in coastal colours. Christina is a picture framer and collector of driftwood which she makes into mirrors, candle holders, drift art etc, so the walls are perfect for displaying and selling her work and that of local artists.

Guest access

Check in time is between 4.30pm to 6.30pm, and I am always here to greet guests.
Breakfast is served between 8.00am and 8.45am.
Guests are required to vacate their room by 10.15am during their stay, and on check out.

Interaction with guests

At Mariners Cottage you will find a good selection of tourist information leaflets and brochures, giving a range of places to visit and suggested walks around the island. Christina can offer ideas based on her local knowledge.
It's a quirky little place...but there is something for everyone here.

Other things to note

Please be aware that on the way up to Pebbles (second floor) you will encounter slight restricted head height at the base of the second flight of stairs. The stairs themselves are a little steeper and narrower than the main staircase.
Minimum of two night stay on Bank Holiday weekends.
Please note, as we are tucked behind the sea wall, you will only have a sea view from the top bedroom (Pebbles - bedroom 2) which has a double bed.
Driftwood (bedroom 1) is a slightly larger room with a King size bed and
stars on the ceiling.
The breakfast room could be described as 'cosy' for four guests dining together, so if you would be happier in your own company than share, please let me know and I will then arrange breakfast times to suit everyone.

Great little place, Christina was very accommodating due to our difficult arrival and early start. Poppy was lovely too, very kind of her to bring me a shoe as a welcoming gift.

Response from Christina:
Thank you both.....I must admit I did have to have a little nap in the afternoon owing to the early start! So good you enjoyed it here and very best wishes to you. Christina and Poppy

Christina was very friendly and offered us a warm welcome and a great breakfast. The room was tastefully decorated and then bathroom was relatively newly refurbished. The location is great - just next to the beach promenade (and to a great restaurant called Quiddles). The room and bathroom were smaller than we'd expected, but overall it was a cosy place to stay for one night.

Response from Christina:
Yes as I mentioned, the bedroom floor slopes one way and the run-off from the shower has to go the other way....hence the slower than normal run away. Sadly there was nothing the plumber could do about it when installing it...... Best Wishes Christina

Lovely room, great bed, fabulous breakfast served by a lovely host. Do check house rules beforehand to be sure you're okay with them - e.g. vacate by 10:15 each day - we had amazing weather so it was no problem for us to be out most days. Christina looked after us well with regular Olympic updates & the lovely Poppy even brought me my shoes one morning! Thanks Christina, we had a lovely time.

Response from Christina:
Thank you Marian for taking the time to post a review for me, very kind and appreciated. Yes I agree with you about checking house rules, in fact, I would hope that all prospective guests look at my website as well as the Airbnb site before booking here, just to acquaint themselves with all the information. The reason I ask guests to vacate their rooms by 10.15am is for purely practical reasons, I alone have to service all rooms and the cottage daily, which normally takes a couple of hours, and I have to get this done before midday as the rest of my day is always full of commitments. All the best to you and hope you enjoy the rest of the Summer.

Great stay, Christina was very helpful in our messages beforehand and with plenty of advice on places to eat, parking etc. Great location, Portland was very picturesque and the room was very cosy in a house full of history! Lovely breakfast the next day, the whole experience felt very welcoming.

Response from Christina:
So glad you decided to break your journey with a night here on Portland, and was really pleased you decided to explore more of the island before you continued West. If you fancy a few days away again before the event, come back and see us and I will give you a special deal. Very best wishes Christina and Poppy

Christina was a delightful host, with a great knowledge of the Isle of Portland and local Dorset area. She gave us excellent ideas of things to do, places to see etc (the views of the tombolo from the chapel on the hill at Abbotsbury were stunning) She also cooked perfect poached eggs for breakfast. The room was clean and comfortable. Many thanks for a wonderful stay.

Response from Christina:
Thank you for your lovely comments, and I am so glad you journeyed along the coast to Abbotsbury to take in that spectacular view along the Fleet Lagoon towards Portland. Yes, I was sure you would like Driftwood....apropos of our conversation about saniflows, you may be interested to know that I have tracked down that 'slippery' plumber, he is coming next week to replace the system in Pebbles, I was so disappointed it wasn't in time for your visit. I will do a special deal for you next time you come to stay....all the best Christina

Lovely host, cute cottage, great location and delightful dog. Breakfast in the morning was delicious with every conceivable condiment available. Poppy the dog was a nice surprise and very scratchable. Only word of caution is while there is free parking opposite it is public and can be filled by visitors to the beach. On the other hand you can see the sea out of the window and with a good throw could get a stone over the seawall and into the water. I would happily recommend this to anyone.

Response from Christina:
With guests such as yourselves it is easy being a good host. For a two day stay I must say you fitted as much into your itinerary as was possible, from historical Portland Castle to hiking along the cliffs to Durdle Dor.....plus fish & chips on the beach. I do hope you enjoyed this quirky and unique island of ours. Come back and see us anytime....with your charger of course! All the best to you both. Christina

What a beautiful location (I am referring to the room on floor 2) with direct views of two most amazing sunsets from the window! We had a very friendly and generous welcome, lovely conversations and most sumptuous breakfasts. Highly recommended
