This landmark property continues a 175 year tradition of welcoming travelers to Portland with a first floor, 2 bedroom flat, modern appointments, and parking. Located perfectly harbor side where the historic West End meets the Old Port.

The space

Built in 1842, by Captain John Hasty, this landmark property underwent a three year preservation style rehabilitation completed late in 2016. The result is a historic property boasting distinctively modern touches that respect the buildings history. The original floors were restored. The original moldings, fireplace casings and doors were tediously preserved. Exposed brick was reclaimed.

Nine foot ceilings and southern exposure will brighten even the coldest winter day. Items found hidden in walls and under floorboards are on display as decoration and help tell the 175 year story. For nearly two centuries the Captain Hasty House overlooked the harbor, welcoming mariners and travelers. Stay in a part of Portland's rich maritime history.

Guest access

You have access to the entire first floor flat. This self contained unit includes a modestly equipped kitchen, bathroom, washer/dryer, two bedrooms and an open living dining area. Please relax anywhere on the outside of the property, but we encourage you to take a few steps across the street to Harborview Park- it is a true urban oasis and is enjoyed safely day and night. Also nearby are two playgrounds if you are traveling with children as well as the Reiche Elementary School play fields.

Interaction with guests

I enjoy sharing my local knowledge of this fine city and I'm just as pleased to leave you in complete privacy. Tell me what you need.

Other things to note

The property is located adjacent to Portland's historic Danforth street corridor, the most popular route for walking from the West End to the Old Port.

A wonderful home to base yourself in while in Portland. The city centre is a short walk away, and the neighbourhood is lovely. The house itself has been lovingly restored, and is a pleasure to be in. The notes on Portland, the local neighbourhood and the apartment provided by Gary are delightful to read, and really informative (we recommend Little Giant if you want to eat a few minutes walk away). Gary was very responsive to any queries, and immensely helpful with details such as getting a baby crib organised and into the house. Really can't recommend here highly enough.

What an absolutely amazing apartment Gary has created in Portland. Attention to detail is brilliant and he really has thought of everything to make for an amazing stay. Even down to the groceries and bottle of wine in the fridge! Great location, within 15 mins or so walk into downtown Portland. Has a great local coffee shop right across the road for breakfast goodies We highly recommend Gary's apartment to stay in Portland

This is a really beautiful apartment, and Gary was an excellent host. So many thoughtful details, like flowers on the table, plus a bowl of fresh fruit, and beer and water in the fridge. Communication before we arrived was excellent, and all the information we needed about the apartment and the local area was waiting for us when we arrived. We were travelling with our 6 month old baby, and from booking to checking out, Gary made the whole experience stress free and generally so pleasant. The apartment is spotless and really gorgeously decorated. The history of it is so interesting as well, and we loved looking at the photo book explaining it. The coffee shop across the street was amazing, and there's a very nice restaurant about 10 metres away. It was an easy walk into the main streets of Portland. Would highly, highly recommend!

Gary's place was absolutely stunning - we didn't want to leave! The location was great for walking into the town centre, extremely safe and we loved our time there. Gary was so helpful and welcoming even when we arrived a little early. He gave us lots of suggestions of things to do and see. If we are ever in the area again we would definitely stay again!

I could only describe our stay at Captain Hasty House as perfect. We were greeted by Gary who was very friendly and only too happy to help. The house itself is beautiful and has been renovated to an extremely high level. It is spacious, light and very comfortable. We ended up spending way more time at the accommodation during our stay because of this. The property is well-located right next door to a restaurant, across the road from great coffee shop and but a short walk into to central Portland. All-round a great experience. I strongly recommend.

I willfully and purposefully wandered far, long into my twenties. I will always cherish the journey. When I stumbled upon the City of Portland, Maine, her icy cliffs rising from the sea, a kinship I never expected, cemented. I proudly consider myself an adopted son of these brick sidewalks, and I seek to share all the special locales to which they lead. My husband Andy and I live on the second floor of the Captain Hasty House in our own comfortably minimalist flat. We make our lives here, and they grow a little more magical every day. If you have questions, we have answers. If you seek solitude, we understand as we travel for the same purpose. Ive spent 15 years rehabilitating derelict and forgotten properties and this 2 family home is the one of which I am most proud. I cherish the opportunity to offer our first floor flat , share our city, and welcome you to a residence that immediately feels like home.
