The space

Experience modern Shanghai in a comfortable, renovated, old Shanghai house with a big garden full of leafy green plants.

My apartment is located right on the southern border of the Former French Concession in Shanghai. Zhaojiabang Road subway station is just a 5 minute walk away. The huge shopping center of Xujiahui (7 full-sized malls with international luxury brands and local goods alike, 2 movie theaters, 3 massive grocery stores including imported goods at Olé, more than 200 restaurants, bars, etc...) is also just a 10 minute walk away. With a 25 yuan cab ride (about $4) you can get to almost any famous location in Shanghai.

The Apartment:
This unique and charming 1BR studio apartment has a kitchen, bathroom and living room/bedroom divided by a folding screen for privacy. There's also a beautiful outside patio/garden space with deck chairs and umbrella, perfect for cooling off on hot Shanghai summer days-you won't find a garden like this in many houses in the neighborhood! In-depth description below:

Bedroom Description:
My apartment features a comfortable Queen size bed with hotel-style bedding and 4 super-comfy goose-feather pillows. The bedroom has a massive wardrobe with clothes hangers provided. Passing through the bedroom will bring you to the doorway to the patio, but ceiling-length curtains can be drawn closed to shut out all light.

Kitchen description:
My kitchen features a western oven, microwave, refrigerator, coffee maker with coffee bean grinder, blender, and brand new kitchen utensils and cookware. Everything in the kitchen and refrigerator is free for guests to use. I provide coffee and 10+ different kinds of tea for guests, including earl grey, English breakfast, green tea, jasmine tea black tea, pu'er tea, ginger lemon tea, jujube brown sugar tea, etc... If you want to request a specific kind of Chinese tea before you arrive, just let me know and I'll do my best to accomodate.

Living room description:
The living room includes a comfortable couch, Chinese-style storage chest that serves as a coffee table and flat-screen TV with DVD player HDMI cable for connection to your laptop as well as 100+ movies on DVD free for your use. I also provide a Xiaomi Box with domestic TV service, and international and domestic movies and TV show streaming via the high speed internet connection. The living room is separated from the bedroom by the beautiful traditional Chinese folding screen visible in my pictures. The sofa converts into a bed that can sleep one person.

Bathroom description:
The bathroom is fully renovated and features a double shower head with regular and "monsoon" or "rain" attachments. If you've never used this kind of shower head before, you've definitely got to try it! The rest of the bathroom is outfitted with Western flush toilet, sink, mirror, and clean tile paneling. I provide bath towels and hand towels for guests.

Garden description:
You'll have a hard time finding a similar apartment in the area with such a large and beautiful outdoor space - this kind of patio/garden is only possible in 1st floor apartments like this one. The patio is filled with plants, flowers, deck chairs for sitting and a big umbrella. The outside space is partially covered by a glass roof and is perfect for outdoor drinks on hazy summer nights or afternoon tea. Shanghai is cold in the winter, so you may want to move the tables and chairs inside for a dinner table. The garden area also has a washing machine and clothes rack for your use if you want to do laundry during your stay. A stand-up steam iron is also provided.

Other things for description:
*There is unlimited hot water in the shower or kitchen. Be aware, the hot water is VERY hot.
*Free high-speed wireless Internet service is provided for guests.
*The apartment is cleaned by a housekeeper after each guest's stay and everything will be spotless for your stay.
*There is a storage space in the wall in the living room that I use to hold cleaning supplies and extra furniture. Guests are welcome to store suitcases inside this storage space if they will be staying longer and want to fully unpack their luggage.
*Since many people have asked me this, I will repeat again here: this apartment sleeps three people total because of the sofa-bed in the living room, for which I can provide bedding. I must charge extra for a third person to cover the additional cost of getting the couch bedding washed and dried.

Description of the community:
This apartment is down at the end of a old traditional Shanghai community. The community itself looks old and a little rough around the edges, but is kept very clean by the local residents. If you really want a sparkling modern community, then Shanghai has plenty of 5-star hotels and high-rise apartments for you. But if you want the authentic old Shanghai feel while still enjoying modern amenities and comforts, then this charming space is perfect for you. Inside the community itself you'll find locals playing cards and mahjong, grandparents playing with their grandchildren, and lazy dogs napping in the Shanghai summer sun. Just outside the gate to the community is the bustling Zhaojiabang Road and immediate access to Shanghai transportation and attractions...the best of both worlds. Just outside the door of the apartment is a small convenience store for buying sodas, beers, and some fruit, while a full-service convenience store (called Quickly) is located at the entrance to the community.

Interaction with guests

I will not be at the apartment during your stay. My workplace is close and I would be happy to meet you and chat about your trip to China and give suggestions and recommendations for things to do in Shanghai during your stay. I'm only a phone call or email away at any time, unless traveling internationally for business (I'll let guests know if I'm unreachable because of travel).

Other things to note

*If you're interested in taking a tour of traditional Shanghai street food, I can arrange a food tour for you at a discount (I'm a part time food tour guide in Shanghai). Tours include Shanghai street food breakfast, dumplings tour (with cooking lesson) and night markets street food tour.
*I will provide shampoo, bodywash, towels, hair dryer and hotel-style toothbrush kits for guests
*I can provide as many keys for the front door as there are guests staying at the apartment
*Please contact me directly if there's anything I could do to make your stay more comfortable. As long as it's reasonable, I'll do my best to accommodate!
*Notice I have a moderate (5 day in advance) cancellation policy

House Rules
Check in time is 2PM - 12AM (midnight)
Check out by 12PM (noon)

Please no smoking inside; outside on the patio only! Please treat my house the way you'd treat your own. Absolutely no drug use in the apartment. Be respectful of the neighbors and the community.

If you want to do photography it's fine, but you will have to pay for a 2 night stay, as that is my minimum. I will not rent my apartment out for just 1 day, and I will not give you a discount because you "only need it for a few hours". Thanks for understanding!

David was such a wonderful, helpful and responsive host. The apartment is as nice, clean and comfortable as shown in the pictures and made us feel like we were at home straight away. It has everything you might need (fridge, internet, stovetop etc.) and is spacious enough for two people. The apartment is not more than 5-10 mins walking distance away from two metro stations but is also central enough to reach all attractions/neighborhoods by short taxi rides. David even helped me out after our stay when I accidentally forgot something in the apartment. We had such an amazing stay and I can't recommend it enough!

Hey all! I'm from the US and I currently live and work in Shanghai China. My job at a consulting firm keeps me pretty busy and you probably won't see me much during your stay, but I'll be very available for communication. Although I'm busy, I still try to stay involved with hobbi…
