A friendly place in Polonnaruwa centre.

The space

Ranaweera’s is a friendly little place. Home to Mr. and Mrs. Ranaweera and their two friendly dogs named Siba and Brown, the place is also frequented by all kinds of birds and squirrels from the neighborhood, who often come to check up on the ripeness of many fruits the garden has to offer. For guests such as you a double room with attached bathroom was especially built adjoining the main family home.

Interaction with guests

Mr. Ranaweera lives in this home, together with his wife. He’s retired and can arrange transportation and activities, while she takes care of the house and makes local dishes upon request. Their two daughters are both living in Colombo to work on their career as bankers.

We had a fantastic stay at the Ranaweera's and a really authentic experience that was true to all the reviews we had read. The Ranaweera's were really welcoming and friendly and made us feel part of the family from the second of our arrival, sharing their pictures and stories. As others have said, the home-cooked food was delicious (and lots of it!). They were able to book a safari tour in the national parks for us and arrange pick-up from the house, which was really helpful. Overall, great value for money - would definitely recommend!

We had a really lovely time staying with the Ranaweera's. They were absolutely great hosts, we felt really welcome and at home, and loved learning about them, their work and Mr Ranweera's environmental projects. The food is amazing, the place is lovely - sitting out in the morning hearing all the jungle sounds and kids heading to school! If you're useless like us you might need to get the fan in the bedroom explained to you - especially if it is as lovely and hot as it was when we were staying! We would definitely recommend the fish therapy if you get the chance!

As other reviews have said, Ranaweera and his wife are wonderful hosts. They made us feel totally welcome in their home and Mala's cooking is both delicious and plentiful. You won't leave hungry. The room is basic but clean and is separate from the main house, so you have all the privacy you need. You can rent bikes for a small fee. They're not much good, but the roads are mostly flat so they're perfect for exploring the ruins.

The hosts were so kind, we had excellent home made meals and the location was great. Near the village, the réservoir and the archeo sites . Very special expérience, very différent from the commercial guesthouses. 100% recommend to real travellers.

Neverbeen User Profile

Neverbeen offers a wide variety of rare homes off the beaten track, from fisherman's huts and tree houses to heritage homes and tea estates. Our team hand-picks and visits every home and meet all hosts to make ensure guests have a positively memorable stay in places they've never been.

We provide travellers and home owners in challenging locations with access to one another, by offering communication services, online marketing services and tourism training, so that locals can make a living off their home and travellers can get to stay in places they have never been.

As such, Neverbeen works for a world in which everyone has the chance to earn income by renting out their home, regardless of language, internet access and tourism experience.

In Sri Lanka, Dishan manages our growing group of homes in cooperation with our scouts, while Rohan creates listings and provides service. In Amsterdam, Marten works out international growth plans. Our team of in-house programmers is constantly developing the platform itself and Ernst & Young does our finances.

The first country we're active in is Sri Lanka, a beautiful country with many undiscovered places to stay. Due to it recently having opened up to tourism after decades of conflict, it is a great place to start and pilot the Neverbeen concept. We plan to expand to ten countries before the end of 2017.
