Duckcottage is a five room stone settlers cottage built in 1853 on five acres of bushland at Second Valley. The property is now a refuge for wildlife so it is NOT suitable for dogs or cats. We call it 'duck' cottage because of the height of the doorways. It has been lovingly restored, and the habitat for birds and native animals has been established through revegetation. The property is secluded (there are no neighbours in sight) but it is a short drive to the beach.

The space
The cottage is nestled into a five acre garden in the undulating hills of the Fleurieu Peninsula. It has been lovingly restored and is maintained by a local builder. It has been our summer cottage for 30 years and is full of memories for us.
When we first bought the cottage the land around it was entirely bare, except for a row of pine trees along the roadside boundary and some ancient trees near the house which are wonderful for climbing or for supporting the hammock. Now the hillside is a flourishing bushland and the garden surrounding the cottage is full of birds and flowers. It is lush and sunny in the cooler months and shady but much dryer and less colourful in summer.
Inside the cottage we have introduced the best of modern conveniences but kept them compatible with the era. Most recently we added air-conditioning to supplement the passive cooling of wide verandah and 'cool' stone floor and thick walls. Although this had been perfectly comfortable through the past 166 summers it is no longer enough for our extreme temperatures, so we have supplemented it with reverse cycle air-conditioning powered with solar panels.
The cottage boasts a nicely appointed lounge, two bedrooms a bathroom and kitchen, We have chosen to have a minimum of electronic devices throughout- there are no screens or clocks but there is a CD player and a selection of books and games to enjoy in front of the huge open fire - or outside in the hammock.
There are two living areas, the lounge room with its retro settee and open fire is warm in winter and cool in summer. The large country kitchen /dining room has up-to-date kitchen appliances as well as the original wood stove which adds warmth and nostalgia. (it no longer works as an oven).
The small bedroom has two single beds, and the main bedroom has a queen sized bed. All have good quality linen, pillows and doonas (with cotton blankets for summer)
Electric heating is provided to supplement the wood fires and there are fans in summer.
Duck cottage is a private, restorative space which is a perfect 'get-away'.
Mobile phone coverage is quite good ... so those who need screens can bring them.

Location

Second Valley, South Australia, Australia

The beach at Second Valley is a five minute drive from the cottage (or a 25 minute walk) It is a unique beach with impressive rock formations and a safe sandy cove which is excellent for swimming, snorkeling and diving. Fishing is allowed from the jetty.
Our favorite body surfing beach Morgan’s Beach which a 20 minute drive to Cape Jervis. It is a long sandy beach at the foot of magnificent sand dunes.
Rapid Bay beach is closer Than Morgan’s but not suitable for swimming. The fishing from the Rapid Bay jetty is said to be the best in the district, and there are impressive aboriginal caves at the north end of the beach.
There are a number of parks and reserves for bush-walking and camping. The largest are the Deep Creek Conservation Park and the Taliska Silver Mine however we also enjoy walking in the Second Valley Forrest which is home to flocks of yellow tailed black cockatoos and wedge tailed eagles.
There are a number of excellent restaurants in the vicinity. Leonard’s Mill is an easy walk from the cottage, it has a bar (and is our local pub) as well as the fine dining. Travel north to Normanville/Yankalilla for a range of restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets. You can also purchase high quality locally produced wines, cheeses, honeys and other produce.
Groceries, fuel and fishing tackle are available from the Delamere General Store which is a ten minute drive south of the cottage. And the Kiosk at Second Valley Beach carries a more limited range of staples.

One of our favorite things in this area is the night sky. On a moonless night the heavens are dazzling and on a moonlit night nothing can beat a walk up through the bush to the top of the hill or a walk along the beach.

I am a landscape designer and retired academic who loves to sing. My partner Leon (who also sings) and I enjoyed hosting overseas visitors for many years when we were WWOOF hosts (WWOOF is willing workers on organic farms) WWOOFing is about building relationships based on travel and hospitality. This same philosophy is what attracted us to Air BnB. Initially we offered Duckcottage (our holiday cottage at Second Valley.) Over the past 40 years we have relished the project of reforesting the bare land around Duckcottage. Many wonderful working bees with friends resulted in thousands of trees and shrubs being planted over many years. Then we set about repairing and restoring the cottage with the aid of a wonderful local artisan. We are delighted to be able to share the cottage, which has been such an important part of the lives of our family and friends. We go there ourselves as often as possible we enjoy the complete change of pace from our busy lives. Our recent venture is to build a sustainable home on a large allotment in Eden Hills. As well as establishing this home and garden we have joined with neighbours to purchase and revegetate the vacant block next to our home, and return it to community use as a quiet space for contemplation, and access to the adjoining Watiparinga reserve. It is the guest suite in our new home which provides our second Air bnb property - the spectacular Ripper Retreat.
