The neighbourhood

Ranworth is a beautiful village in the heart of the Norfolk Broads. There is a nature reserve in the village which has a thatched visitor centre on stilts at the end of a boardwalk which overlooks Ranworth Broad. From here you can take wildlife trips on the Norfolk Wildlife Trust boat. There is a huge array of birds and wildlife to observe and listen to here. The rare swallowtail butterfly can often be seen in the garden. Ranworth church which you can see from the property is known as the 'Cathedral of the Broads'. Climb up to the top of the tower and enjoy wonderful views of the village and views all the way across to the coast. The church is known for it's beautiful rood screen and antiphoner and is well worth a visit. There is also a cafe here. A few minutes walk from the accommodation is the staithe which is host to the many boats which visit the village. Here you will find a pub, shop (closed from November until March) and cafe. It's a great spot to have a meal or a drink and watch the world go by. There are walks in the area and you may also like to visit the nearby Fairhaven Woodland and Water Gardens, which comprises of 53 hectares (131 acres) of beautiful ancient woodland, water gardens and a private broad at South Walsham.
Amongst the many things that make living here special, are waking up to the sunshine with the mist hanging over the broad (with the boom of the bittern in the distance if you are lucky!), listening to the owls hooting late at night and drifting along the river on a boat. There is so much to see and do here not only in the village but also in the rest of the Broads. We are also close to many beaches. Winterton beach is a favourite both with locals and our guests. There is cafe right on the beach and a cosy pub in the village of Winterton. Norwich is only half an hour away with it's wonderful shops and museums. Wroxham is 15 minutes away where you can hire a boat to explore the waterways and there are fishing jetties on the River Bure, about 10 minutes drive away. Imagine Spa in Blofield Heath has a range of relaxing treatments available too, again only 10 minutes away!

Getting around

There are train stations in Acle (5 miles) and Salhouse (3 miles) for trains to Norwich, Great Yarmouth and North Norfolk. Norwich International Airport is 10 miles away.

Other things to note

Please note that the stairway up to the main sitting/bedroom is steep so may not be suitable for all guests especially those with mobility issues. The kitchenette has limited facilities and is only suitable for preparing basic meals (no oven).

The Boathouse is an absolute gem within the Broads. My boyfriend and I went for 3 nights and were welcomed by Jane on arrival. A very homely and welcoming place with the local pub a 5 minute walk away (great desserts!) We were able to easily drive out to surrounding towns and have relaxed nights in the boathouse. The kitchenette is well equipped and ensured we had our pancakes for breakfast. A lovely stay and sure to be back.

We had a lovely few days stay at the Boathouse. The welcome touches made us feel at home - especially the dog bowl and biscuit for our dog Rosie! Jane always responded to texts quickly and was very helpful. The boathouse has views across fields to the rear and the Broads to the front. It is a peaceful place, yet walking distance to a local shop and pub for evening meals. Highly recommended.

We found the Boat House when looking for a place to stay for a friend's wedding in a nearby village, but when we arrived we found not just a place to stay, but a place to relax and unwind as well. From the ease of the booking process to the beautiful surroundings and the immaculately clean yet homely feel, the Boat House was perfect. Although it's located in a small village, the Boat House is well placed for the surrounding villages and towns, and Jane has made available plenty of helpful books and guides to what's on in the area. The Boat House itself is very cosy, and makes great use of the space - it was clear that a lot of effort has gone in to making it a welcoming and peaceful environment. Jane was fantastic - the instructions she provided shortly before our stay were very helpful, and she was on-hand to welcome us when we arrived, despite it being quite late! Overall, a fantastic place to stay and a great base to explore the Norfolk Broads from. Hope to be back again soon!

We had a wonderful few nights in the boathouse, it is so cosy and well presented with everything we needed - including lovely soft towels, a small kitchenette (which does include a portable hob and pans etc). We went to the very good local pubs and we recommend getting a takeaway pizza for the Maltsters round the corner (made freshly to order). We were on our bikes and found plenty to do locally and we also got the train from Salhouse to Cromer and the beautiful Felbrigg hall. Thank you so much Jane for a lovely stay. Claire and James

I was born and brought up in lovely Norfolk and live here with my husband and children, along with a gang of dogs, chickens, guinea pigs, and rabbits. I hope you enjoy this wonderful part of the world as much as we do!
