The late Gabriel Garcia Marquez could not have found any other city as full of magic and charm as Cartagena de Indias.
Some of the most memorable passages of his novel "Love in the Time of Cholera" take place in the deserted "Parque de los Evangelios ", or "Plaza Fernandez de Madrid", as it is known today, in honor of an important doctor and historical figure by the name of Jose Fernandez de Madrid.
It was in this square that the starry-eyed Florentino Ariza sat with a book of poetry under an almond tree hoping to catch a glimpe of his beloved Fermina Daza who lived with her over-bearing father in the house across the street. In reality this house, one of the oldest in the Old City, is known as Casa de Don Benito, which today is a beautifully restored private residence located next to the L'Aliance Francesa. Interestingly enough, there is a knocker in the shape of a parrot on the front door - a reference no doubt to the quirky ominous opening sequence of the novel "Love in the Time of Cholera"...
This property is just steps away from restaurants, bars, pizzerias, supermarkets, banks, and nearly all the historic sites. Public transit a few blocks outside the walled city although taxis abound at reasonable rates.
Other Things to Note
"Plaza Fernandez de Madrid" is one of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's favorite squares, which inspired
