The late Gabriel Garcia Marquez could not have found any other city as full of magic and charm as Cartagena de Indias.
Some of the most memorable passages of his novel "Love in the Time of Cholera" take place in the deserted "Parque de los Evangelios ", or "Plaza Fernandez de Madrid", as it is known today, in honor of an important doctor and historical figure by the name of Jose Fernandez de Madrid.
It was in this square that the starry-eyed Florentino Ariza sat with a book of poetry under an almond tree hoping to catch a glimpe of his beloved Fermina Daza who lived with her over-bearing father in the house across the street. In reality this house, one of the oldest in the Old City, is known as Casa de Don Benito, which today is a beautifully restored private residence located next to the L'Aliance Francesa. Interestingly enough, there is a knocker in the shape of a parrot on the front door - a reference no doubt to the quirky ominous opening sequence of the novel "Love in the Time of Cholera"...
Public transit a few blocks outside the walled city although taxis abound at very reasonable fares.

The apartment was in a great area and very cute and clean.
Stayed 4 nights. Maria is extremely friendly and helpful. The apartment was clean, secure and perfectly located. Would definitely stay there again. Diego and Maria (another one) who work in the cafe below were also wonderful people. Very pleased with all aspects of our stay.
Maria is possibly the loveliest host we have met with 4 years of airbnb. Warm and welcoming she and her wonderful staff made our stay a delight. The apartment is cosy and quiet....and we were here for New Years!!! The apartment is situated on probably the nicest plaza in Cartagena so our evening nightcap was usually at our front door. Cartagena is a picture postcard destination and staying with Maria completed the whole experience. The apartment is small, but perfect size for a base to come and go. We stayed a week and were very comfortable. The mezzaine stairs are quite steep so I would not recommend for the more mature or less mobile. But for a couple or single I think it is a great space. Loved it. Thanks Maria for making our New Years so much fun.
The wi-fi worked great and was plenty fast. The shower plenty hot and comfortable. The location is terrific and pretty special being on one of Cartagena's Old town leafy plazas. The only thing i missed was a balcony or a view. But it was consistently too hot to have windows open anyway. happy to have the airconditioner and fans. So close to several great restaurants, Cevicheria and La Mulata among others.
Staying in Maria's studio was very convenient. We walked right outside to all kinds of shops and restaurants. The cafe in front makes delicious Coco Lemonada and the ladies working in the cafe were so helpful as to what direction we should go and what was available to see. We also really liked eating around the corner at La Cocina de Carmela because it felt like a local place and lunch was a flat $6 for soup, big plate of food, a drink and dessert. They also gave me vegetarian options which was great. We also recommend going to the Volcano for a mud bath. We went really early in a taxi to beat the crowds and were able to have the volcano all to ourselves. Bus loads came in after us. All in all it was a great trip :) Thank you Maria!
Location, location, location ... I loved my stay in Maria's studio, situated right into the magnificent Centro historico of Cartagena, with a balcony overlooking the Plaza Fernandez de Madrid, always full of life. The studio is cozy, with everything needed including A/C, quite important to have in the hot and humid weather of Cartagena. In case you have any problem, Maria is always available, as well as the personnel of the Café downstairs (try the Lemonada de Coco... really :-)) - A great stay, I recommend it !
We had a great time in Cartagena. Maria responded promptly to our questions. The apt we rented was being renovated so Maria offered one of the apts facing the street. The location is excellent: in front of a "plaza" in the middle of the "walled city". Bars, restaurants and historic sites are at walking distance. Highly recommended.
perfect location & comfortable apartment. this plaza quickly became of our favorites in cartagena - very easy walk to everything, variety of food/drink choices, not too large (those are usually packed with vendors & acts) or too small (no food options, no trees, etc)...great spot & just right in all respects. apartment was clean, quiet & cool (important if you want to sleep in or take a nap!), & everything worked perfectly (hot water, AC, etc)...would recommend.
Unfortunately this apartment, although well located, did not meet our expectations.
Great things are: location, air conditioning, security, hot water and Maria!
However, the apartment was loud, dark and not very clean. We were not informed of construction starting at 6AM every morning, after loud music from the plaza ended at 4AM (BRING EARPLUGS). I live normally in a very loud inner city apartment, but this was more than I could handle. I don’t think the floor was swept upon our arrival, and many of the furnishings were falling into disrepair. The sheets on the bed were very low quality to the point where the bottom fitted sheet slipped off every night leaving a bare mattress.
Maria was very nice and allowed us to have a 3rd guest stay one of the nights, but the sofa bed fell over in the middle of the night (nobody was hurt!). Overall we slept very badly which affected the whole visit to Cartagena. The apartment was also very dark, no mosquito screens on the windows, TV had no reception, and the drainage in the shower flooded the entire bathroom floor each time.
The overall cleanliness was not sufficient.
Finally, the value for money is not satisfactory. Cartagena has a range of resorts providing full breakfast, water, cleaning, a view, concierge and pool for only $100 per night (2pp). After buying breakfast every day for $10pp, the extras provided by a hotel or resort would have most certainly outweighed the great location of this apartment.
Maria has a great little spot near everything you need in the old town. We had fun. the place was clean and everything went well. The kitchen is a little limited, but if you don't plan to cook much its a great spot.
