WEST MENLO TREE-TOP STUDIO
Modern, sunlit, airy studio apartment; top story above our detached garage. Guests comment on how light it is, with windows all around--but of course you can draw the blinds for more privacy or filtered light.

COVID-19 UPDATE
We’ve reduced all our rental rates due to Stanford’s closure, and we’ve temporarily increased our cleaning fees moderately to fairly pay our cleaner for the additional time to fully comply with Airbnb’s excellent guidelines: https://www.airbnb.com/resources/hosting-homes/a/cleaning-guidelines-for-preventing-the-spread-of-covid-19-163 We are rigorously completing every item on the checklist in advance the arrival of every guest.

LOCATION
West Menlo Park/Sharon Heights section of Santa Cruz Avenue. Close to Stanford Medical Center & Hospital-- 4 minutes by car, 9 minutes on bike, 30 minutes walking. Easy biking distance to Stanford, SLAC, downtown Menlo Park, Sand Hill Rd & 280. We are less than 20 minutes walk from the northwest corner of the Stanford campus and about 35 minutes' walk from the center of campus. We are also walking or easy biking distance to downtown Menlo Park, Palo Alto, and the Stanford Shopping Center.

KITCHEN
Fully equipped, with Jennair electric stove & oven, full-size fridge, dishwasher, microwave, garbage disposal, instant hot. Breakfast bar with tall chairs.

QUEEN-SIZED BED--Comfortable. queen-sized bed with nightstands and bedside reading lamps. A child could sleep on a folding foam mattress on the floor--that would be the 3rd person (there is no a sofa bed).

FULL BATH with enclosed combo tub/shower.

LAUNDRY--dedicated washer & dryer in garage.

AMENITIES
High-quality all-cotton bed linens include a down comforter, 4 pillows, and there is an ample supply of towels. Toiletries are provided (soap, shampoo and conditioner). Though we don't provide an alarm clock; most of our guests use their own phones.

You have your own thermostat, which allows you to adjust the temperature to your comfort. We ask that you set the thermostat to low when you are away.

BIKE OPTION
Many of our guests are international scholars coming to teach, research or study at Stanford. Many of them prefer not to rent a car and have been happy to be walking or biking distance from campus. If you'd like to bike, we have a spare bike we can let you use at a nominal cost: $5 a day, $25 a week or $75 a month plus $75 refundable deposit. It's a medium-sized Huffy, with handbrakes.

HOUSE RULES - NO SMOKING, no exceptions. No shoes (to keep the cottage extra-clean). Recycling actively encouraged.

Guest access
You will be the sole user of your Airbnb rental! The only shared space is the outdoor path from the driveway to your entrance, and the access to the washer dryer in the garage, which is shared with one other Airbnb.

Other things to note
HEAT SETTINGS – Your studio is equipped with an excellent energy-efficient heater-A/C unit. We welcome guests who share our desire for energy conservation, prefer moderate heat settings in the cool weather, moderate A/C use in the warm weather, and are conscientious about turning all settings down when they are away. The space heats and cools very quickly, so there is no need to leave on the heat or A/C when you are out of the studio.

NOTE: San Mateo County Zoning Regulations prohibit “The short-term rental of rooms, for a period of less than 30 consecutive days” in most residential areas. This includes Menlo Park, Portola Valley, Redwood City, San Carlos, Woodside and many other cities.

Garbage pickup is Tuesday morning, usually around 7-8am. You don't need to take the bins out or anything--we just wanted to give you a heads up in case you notice any noise.

Location

Menlo Park, California, United States

Our neighborhood is variously referred to as West Menlo Park, University Heights and as Sharon Heights. We are in the unincorporated county section of Menlo Park, which gives a more casual feel of the neighborhood. There are no sidewalks, and we still see a mix of older, smaller homes with large lots and the more recent mega-houses which have replaced some of them.

We are within walking distance to Stanford campus and the beautiful Stanford foothills, as well as a lovely little neighborhood shopping area which contains everything from The Dutch Goose, a popular local beer-and-burger pub since the 1960s, to one of the premier destination restaurants of the sustainable food movement, Flea Street Café, and everything in between, including a post office, dry cleaner, barber, gas station and, of course, a Starbucks :)

My husband Steve and I are long-time local residents; I was born in Palo Alto, so a real native and Steve is from England. We were high-school sweethearts (his dad was at SLAC for a year), then we reconnected 20+ years later & got married! Now we're empty nesters with 4 kids in our blended family, all living in California. We have a successful home-based marketing agency, so we’re around most of the time for your convenience and security. We love hosting and also traveling-- to my husband's native UK (lots of family & friends still there). Have been to China, Cuba, Mexico and much of western Europe. Hoping to travel more in Asia, Africa and Latin America. We love taking road trips in the Western US (our Tesla is our biggest splurge!), and exploring big cities, especially NYC & LA. Our favorite trip of all was a family stay in New Orleans-- fabulous music, food, history & people! Since Airbnb is asking, the "5 things we can't live without" are (not necessarily in this order): movies & music, exercise, NPR & BBC, our kids & our cats. We are Michael Pollan converts and think his 7-word food philosophy sums it up beautifully: "eat food (as opposed to food-like products), not too much, mostly plants." We buy local, sustainable, organic as much as we can.
