Our homestead is a peaceful oasis nestled in the mountains of eastern Vermont. Get away from it all, yet be close to everything Vermont has to offer year round! Minutes from Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH and King Arthur Bakery/School in Norwich.

The space

Nestled on a wooded hillside at the end of the road, our newly renovated home has four available guest rooms--two single occupancy bedrooms on the second floor, and two double occupancy bedrooms on the third floor of the house. Each bedroom is listed separately on Airbnb, so if you are interested in more than one room, or a different sized room, please see our other listings. We also have a cabin listed through airbnb. It sleeps up to 5.

This bedroom listing that you are viewing here has a double bed, and is located on the third floor. It has a great view, and privacy. All rooms include bed and bath linens, and access to two full bathrooms (one with a large stall and rain-shower, the other with a deep soaking tub--we also have a lovely outside shower available during warm months). A self-serve breakfast of local foods is included in nightly rate.

Our open living/dining room area is naturally well lit with views across the valley and woodlands. The house is sited above the confluence of two streams, and has a large south-facing deck, screened porch and stone patios, offering space for relaxing or working outdoors. High speed internet and wifi are available, but no television. Cell coverage is poor at the house, but a land line is available for domestic calls.

We have a friendly Corgi, a joyful Cockapoo, a shy Great Pyrenees, and gentle cat. Many wild birds visit our feeders year round. In the summer, our house is surrounded by perennial and vegetable gardens, and a growing orchard on the hill above.

Our property is adjacent to the Appalachian Trail Corridor and is contiguous with Land Trust and town forest, offering access right out our backdoor to miles and miles of trails for walking, hiking, mountain biking and cross country skiing. Each season offers opportunities to glimpse wildlife and birds.

We are located 9 miles from the I-91/ I-89 interstate junction, within a short drive to Dartmouth College/Hanover, NH, Woodstock, VT, as well as many ski areas and local attractions. Driving times from Boston: 2.5 hours; NYC: 5 hours; Montreal: 3.5 hours. Public transportation from Boston, New York and Burlington/Montreal (trains and buses) are available to nearby White River Junction. You will need a car to get around, as much of Vermont and New Hampshire is rural with little to no public transportation. There are a number of rental car agencies nearby in West Lebanon, NH/White River Jct, VT. There are many restaurants within a short drive (15-30 minutes).

We hope you will consider our home, Solheim ("sunhouse" in Norwegian) for a beautiful Vermont mountain retreat within easy driving distance of many northern New England attractions and activities year round.

Guest access

Guests have access to all public spaces in our home, full use of the kitchen if you prefer to bring in your own food and cook for yourself. All gardens and woods on our property.

Interaction with guests

Guests are warmly welcomed to our home. We will be in residence during your stay, but you determine how much you want to interact. We orient you to the house, and are available to answer any questions. If you prefer to have privacy or less interaction, feel free to come and go as you please. If you enjoy some conversation or a shared breakfast with us, we are more than happy to engage--we've met many wonderful people through airbnb!

Other things to note

During the winter months, Vermont roads require at least good snow tires. Many people have 4 wheel drive vehicles, or use studded snow tires for winter driving conditions. Our road is well-maintained by the town, but it is a typical Vermont mountain road--it will be a challenge without good snow tires or 4 wheel drive until the plow comes through. If you have any questions, please ask!

Soldheim Farm is a little piece of paradise, though you do need to like dogs, and hills, if you are to enjoy it to the full! The house is so much more than a B and B - I would say it is a community of beings, and yet there is always a place - on the deck, or a comfy chair inside - where you can find solitude, and beauty. Alex and Martha are wonderful warm hosts and they have built an amazingly beautiful home and garden which they share so generously with their guests.

We really enjoyed our two night stay at this property. The bedroom was cosy and comfortable with a beautiful view of the woods in the morning. We valued being able to use the kitchen facilities to cook a meal and breakfast was very chilled as we were told to help ourself to a range of things laid out for us. We loved the menagerie of animals that Alexandra had at her home including the dogs, kitten and ducks! A fantastic stay!

We spent a wonderful week-end at Solheim Farm. It's the perfect place to explore Vermont and take the time to slow down. Alexandra and Martha were interesting, mindful hosts and great company, not to mention the dogs and cat. The house is cozy, tidy and very well-situated with a beautiful view on the surrounding forests and garden. Our room was just what we hoped for: clean, private and comfortable. We were able to cook in their spacious kitchen and loved the outdoor seating area to sit and relax. The Green Mountains are a short drive away and there are great walks nearby. We could have easily spent all of our time at the farm and hope to be back soon.

We had such a lovely time here. Our hosts were so welcoming and easy to talk to. Their house had so much life to it, and so many furry friends for us to interact with! We can't wait to come back and visit again!!

This home is truly a special place to stay. It is filled with all the necessities you'd need if you are in the Upper Valley for business or pleasure and then add to that, two of the most welcoming hosts you could ever imagine. Alex and Martha are so kind and their home is so comfortable that I try to stay with them every time I'm in the area for work (4x/year).

I live in Norwich, Vermont, but am a graduate student at Harvard, so commute to Boston regularly. My area of study is International Relations with an emphasis on sustainable development, education and human rights. I've been working in education and education administration, as well as organization development consulting for the past 20+ years. Our house is our home, homestead and sanctuary. We are enjoying developing our property according to permaculture principles and have put in a fruit tree orchard, honeybees, a simple rainwater catchment system, vegetable, perennial, forest and native species gardening are underway, and we are managing the land for sustainable biodiversity. In addition, we have a well established sugarbush with approximately 450 taps. Guests visiting during maple sugaring season may have the opportunity to participate--depending on mother nature and the trees.
