We loved Le Terrier de Bois dalon. It is a very special place and we really felt we were privileged to be staying in an authentic French home. It is just off the beaten track so no neighbours to bother if we wanted to sit up chatting into the small hours with music playing but it lies within a few minutes of the local amenities of the town of Chalais, with an Intermarche, Lidl, Train station etc. We were a party of 9 the youngest being 19. Julie met us at the house and made us feel very welcome. We had a problem with the pool alarm which seemed to be quite sensitive but a quick email sorted everything out without further issue. The area is fabulous for outdoor activities. We kayaked and ran and explored the local towns but basically just loved hanging out at the house, enjoying the pool and facilities on offer. cant recommend highly enough.

This country house is set in stunning surroundings of plum and Apple trees. It's like a post card. We really enjoyed sitting out in the evening listening to the sounds of the countryside when the kids had gone to bed. However unfortunately there were some downsides. It didn't feel like some rooms had anybody in them for quite sometime. It's the countryside so we were expecting insects and animals however the number of spiders and spider webs in some of the bedrooms was too much. Overall the bedrooms were too old and not maintained well. There are two reasonable bedrooms but would emphasise these are the only double rooms. The other three twin rooms are not up to standard, two of which, in the boiler type room annex, could not be used by a family as they are a safety risk with exposed shelves of cleaning products, cat litter tray, boiler with sharp edges and open attic full of old belongings. The beds in the annex were extremely old and not up to the standard expected. Similarly the Two bathrooms in the house were old and of poor quality. There is a really nice pool in the beautiful gardens which our two kids thoroughly enjoyed however for parents make sure you are aware there is no safety fence around the pool. Also, we were made aware on arrival of a large electric fence around one side of the house for the neighbour's pony. The voltage is high enough to seriously injure a child yet we were told we were not allowed to turn it off despite our concerns around our children's safety. This is unacceptable and meant we could Not let the children out of our sight or run freely in the garden, which was a shame as was one of the main reasons we chose this house and location. Before our departure we had also enquired as to how to vacate the house and the communication with the owner led to much confusion. We left the house in good condition with dishes washed, rubbish removed etc. We hadn't used the living room so it was same as how we found it. The only thing we didn't do was the standard professional cleaning such as washing bathroom floors, wash/dry bed sheets and make the beds for the next holiday makers, etc However the owner was under the impression it was our responsibility to do this as well which is a little strange and which is why there seemed to be a lot of confusion. They also followed up afterwards asking for 100 euro for them to hire a cleaner. Again this was baffling as professional cleaning was never agreed and also we know the Maid cleaning service costs 10 euro per hour so 10 hours of work would be a little much for what was required. Nevertheless we gave the owner 30 euro for 3 hours cleaning. Unfortunately this left a a bit of a sour ending to what was...
