The space

This is a newly renovated 5th floor apartment in the center of the vieille ville or old town of Grasse. The house dates from 1690 and there is no lift, so pack light and be prepared to climb. Once up there, you will have comfort, fabulous views and no-one above you to make noise.

The apartment is 67 sq m. There is one main bedroom with large bath en suite, and a study upstairs with a sofa bed that opens to sleep two. The view from the French windows in the bedroom is south, out over the old town of Grasse to the nearby hills.

The bathroom has a large tub, a washing machine and sink, and spacious clothes closets. On the other side of the apartment there is a separate shower and sink, which is convenient if more than two people are staying. The WC is separate as in most French homes.

The kitchen has been recently renovated and is fully equipped, with a four burner glass-ceramic cooktop, microwave, electric toaster oven, Tassimo coffee maker, electric kettle, and blender. There is plenty of counter top space for preparing food, and a snack bar with two bar stools for convenient breakfasts or drinks.

The dining area seats four and shares an L-shaped room with the sitting room, which is equipped with stereo CD and radio and has soft niche lighting. Large windows offer a view across the tiled roofs of Grasse over to the hills beyond.

Upstairs is the study, with WiFi connection, a desk to work at, the sofa bed, books in French, English, German and Italian, and games for adults and children. The views are the best from up here, down to Cannes and Mandelieu la Napoule on the coast, out over small streets and prominent buildings of the old town, up into the hills, and over to the cathedral of Notre-Dame-du-Puy, which is illuminated at night.

All the big windows have external roller shutters enabling you to let in the breeze without the heat in summer. These shutters and the double glazing throughout reduce the transmission of heat and sound, and provide excellent security as well.

Except at the upper level, all the floors have the original tomettes or terracotta tiles that are typical of historic buildings in the region, carefully preserved and maintained.

Amenities: WiFi, washing machine, a/c and electric fans for summer, heating for winter, microwave, toaster oven, Tassimo coffee maker, electric kettle, blender, CD player and radio, and hair dryer. Iron and ironing board on request.

Interaction with guests

A local representative who speaks English as well as French will meet you to give you the keys and show you the apartment. She will be available by phone should you encounter problems during your stay.

The neighbourhood

Check out for information on Grasse and the surrounding area in English or French.

There are many festivals in Grasse and the surrounding towns during the spring and summer, from the Fete du Jasmin in Grasse to the film festival in Cannes and the Grand Prix in Monaco. Be sure to do a little research online.

There are famous gardens to visit on the Cote d'Azur, beaches you can reach in 20-30 minutes' drive, and hills where you can walk or explore villages perched on rock cliffs.

In addition, Grasse has many museums of its own, from the comprehensive International Museum of Perfumery, with collections dating back to Roman times, to small collections of Provencal costumes and furniture, houses of note, and maritime history.

For those of you who enjoy shopping, there are many boutiques in Grasse, and of course the famous perfumeries offer tours of their facilities.

In nearby St. Cesaire, you can visit amazing and extensive stalagtite and stalagmite caves, or at the Confiserie Florian in Tourettes-sur-Loup you can see the process of making candied fruits and flowers and sample the products.

These are just a few ideas to get you started.

Getting around

The narrow cobbled streets of the historic center of Grasse are closed to traffic from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. daily, making it pleasant and easy to explore on foot.

There are parking garages within easy walking distance from the flat, the closest being about 5 mins. away. Get a weekly pass when you arrive.

There are various ways to get to Grasse from Nice airport:

- Rent a car
- Order a car to meet you
- Take a bus

If you need help ordering a car to meet you, let us know.

The number 500 bus goes from Terminal 1, Platform 4 and costs 1,50 euros. It takes about 90 minutes, winding up through the hill villages. Ask the driver to open the storage under the bus if you have a lot of baggage. You'll have a 15 min. walk at the other end to get to the apartment. Find schedules at

If you arrive by train, exit the Grasse station and cross the road to take the FUNIX bus up into the old town. It's easily recognizable as it's covered with paintings of flowers. It costs 1,50 euros. Get off at the stop named Fragonard, normally the 10th stop unless the driver skips one or two.

Bon voyage!

Other things to note

We can do laundry for you by arrangement during your stay (if you don't want to use the washing machine). There is no dryer, but there is a clothes rack, and clothes dry quickly.

Four adults max, or two adults and two children 10 or older.

Here’s what some people have said about staying in the apartment:

Alex, USA: I love everything about the apartment, both inside and out. I can't imagine a place with a better view, and to walk up to the top room, open the windows, and sit there looking at the ocean with the sun and the wind streaming in is pure magic.

There is a feeling of being tucked away, yet the views out over the city and of the sea give you an incredible feeling of openness. What a unique combination of sensations!

Laura, Japan: We loved the town, which is so rooted in its history as one of the centres of perfume making but not locked into it. It’s alive - not a museum - and has all the things one loves about Mediterranean France without the flashiness of the bigger cities.

Mary, UK: The apartment is a lovely place to stay after exploring the old narrow streets of Grasse. The International Museum of Perfumery is fascinating. Returning to the comfortable, well equipped flat is restful, and we particularly enjoyed the wonderful views over the red rooftops, right down to the coast.

Sophie, UK: It's a bit of a climb up to the flat but once up there it's a haven of calm and light. You can open all the windows and get a lovely through breeze in the heat, and the views of the red tiled roofs of the old town and the swifts swooping in the evening air are lovely sights.

Liz, UK: I have very fond memories of my holiday in Grasse! We had such lovely mornings in the flat! Enjoying fresh coffee and croissants overlooking the beautiful rooftops and out to sea in the glorious morning sun! The bedroom is lovely and light and the bed was very comfortable.

The view from here is fantastic! and the apartment is a lot bigger than it looks in the images. Be prepared for the long flight of stairs (hence the beautiful view) Enjoy the bells ringing from the Cathedral.

Charlotte's apartment is very well-situated in the historic centre of Grasse. We arrived after a very long journey and delayed flight on New Year's Eve to be greeted by the friendly Patricia, who knew we would be late but who had not received our texts. Even given the miscommunication, she was warm, welcoming, and so helpful. The apartment is ideal for exploring the historic town, although perhaps not for families with young children and those who have mobility issues, as it is up several flights of stairs, as detailed in the description. The pictures do not do justice to how characterful the accommodation is, and how stunning the views are, from several of the windows. Wifi is good, board games were available (and put to good use) and the kitchen is well-equipped with cutlery, crockery, herbs and spices. The flat has a TV, two large, comfortable beds, a bathroom and a shower room. We really enjoyed staying here and would happily return in the future.

The flat is a spacious, comfortable and relaxing place to be based, and there are fantastic views from more or less every window. Patricia met us on arrival and was very helpful with queries, and it is useful that she is also in the building. Grasse is a good place for a base. It is an interesting old town with fine art and museums, and is within striking distance of some very attractive smaller places to explore like Tourettes-sur-Loup, Vence and St Paul de Vence.

We had a wonderful stay in this perfectly situated duplex. The person in charge of the check-in/out was very nice. Moreover, Grasse is a wonderful city with plenty of cheap or free museums, and some beautiful pieces of nature nearby. Car is not easy to park, but you'll understand better after seeing how small and intricate is the city center.

The apartment was perfectly located - central to everything. We walked from the bus stop. Happy we had backpacks instead of wheeled suitcases, otherwise, the cobblestone streets and 6 flight walk-up would have been difficult and frustrating. The apartment was clean, spacious and quiet. My daughter and I felt very comfortable and safe. It was unusually hot during the time we were visiting - having air conditioning would have been nice - but we made good use of the fans that were provided.

Response from Charlotte:
Hi Mary, Thanks for your nice review. We have added a "ventilateur rafraichisseur" to replace the air conditioner that was not working. I know how hot it can get! Shasha
