Description

The space

The space is mostly one big room with high ceilings - sitting area on one side, queen memory foam bed on the other, and a separate kitchen area. Please note there is only a space heater, and its extremely cold in the winter! In the summer there's an evaporative cooler, and not typical air conditioning.
It's a tad rustic and "funky", but has the basics one needs for an affordable getaway.
Wifi and a small TV with a DVD player and some movies - no cable.
The location is great - only one lot down from a paved road on the border of Joshua Tree and Yucca Valley. It's a quick and easy drive into town for restaurants, shopping and the National Park (you will find that many homes out here, while secluded, take forever to get to and from!). 5.4 miles to the park visitor's center.
There's lots of joshua trees on and around the one acre property, and beautiful views of the sunset and sunrise.
Note: the reviews mention goats, but the girls have retired from airbnb work and are now on a big farm with other goats.

Guest access

The kitchen area has a small/medium refrigerator, microwave, hot plate but no stove. There's a charcoal BBQ on the patio. Fireplace cannot be used, otherwise it's space heaters and can get chilly in the winter. For the summer there is a large evaporative cooler, which many people prefer to air conditioning in the desert climate. It puts moisture into air, rather than pulling it out.

Interaction with guests

The studio is attached to the main house where I live, but I usually just have it up for rent when I'm not in town. If I am home, it's separate entrances on opposite ends of the house, and very private.
If out of town, I will be sending access info, and you'll have the whole property to yourself! (main house is locked up - 2 guests max, don't get any bright ideas about a party)

The neighbourhood

Right on the border of Yucca Valley and Joshua Tree, it's the best of both worlds - space, privacy and views but still an easy quick drive to all the shopping and restaurants if needed.

Getting around

Just a few houses down from the main paved road - enough for peace and quiet withOUT a long bumpy dirt road drive! About 4 miles to the National Park welcome center, 2-3 miles from shopping centers.

Other things to note

While it's mostly quiet and the sounds of birds, you may occasionally hear or see neighbors. That goes both ways, so wrap up the drum circle by 11pm, please.

We had a wonderful time at Kelly's plac. It was private and cozy, close to the park, and had all the basics. We would stay here again.

I'm not sure I would have booked this place if I knew what I was paying for... I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it seemed as if the owner hadn't tended to this property in quite sometime. The pictures are a bit misleading. The yard is very overgrown accompanied by an old trailer and a fallen tree. The inside was definitely on the "funky" side as described in the listing, but we didn't expect there to be parts of the floor removed or trash still in the bathroom. We were not able to pull into the property itself which made for some long trips of lugging our belongings back and forth. And the description of finding the entrance to the studio itself could use some more detail, seeing as how it's nowhere near the entrance to the gate. I'm not one to complain, I just want to know what to expect and what I'm paying for.

Response from Kelly:
Funny how the messiest guests I've had here left the worst review! "Trash" in the bathroom would be a few paper towels/wipes used during cleaning, and there are no parts of the floor removed - I don't know what she's referring to. There's an unusual tile job on the floor, which is shown in the photos. The studio is about 100 feet from the gate - this is the first complaint, but if someone needed to drive their car inside the gate so as not to lug their belongings more than 10 feet, prior arrangements could be made to do so. If an unoccupied trailer on the property will bother you, than it's probably not the best choice (and neither is Yucca Valley/Joshua Tree for that matter - since at least half the properties have one or more!).

Such a great little spot. Close to town and yet remote enough to feel like you have some space. Great paintings and art and a perfect little kitchenette. Will be back.

My husband and I stayed at Kelly's studio for our 1 year wedding anniversary- I was looking for somewhere cozy and private, close enough to the national park so we could easily explore, and that's what we found here! When Kelly says the studio is a tad "funky," we knew what she meant, but it is funky in a charming way and completely functional. It was not at all too cold for us at night despite it being a rainy, windy weekend. We heard the neighbors every now and then but it wasn't bothersome. Wifi was great- we watched movies on our laptop each night. There are more dishes and cookware than I expected, as well as a large refrigerator (you just need to plug it in when you get there and unplug it when you leave), and the hot plate was perfect for our simple meals. We thoroughly enjoyed our relaxing stay at Kelly's place and would absolutely return!

After booking an impromptu trip to Joshua Tree, we found Kelly's place to be one of the most splendid and well priced places in the area. The location of her home is close to Joshua Tree and to the center of town, so getting to and from the house was a breeze. The unique and cozy atmosphere of her place made us instantly feel at home. Her books, music and amenities made our downtime tremendously enjoyable! Her home has given us a deep appreciation for the desert and we are already trying to plan a trip back. If you are looking for a quiet/artistic space to enjoy the desert, book with Kelly.

I had a lovely time here! Location is great, quick drive into town but plenty quiet with great sunrises and sunsets. Kelly is easy to communicate with, the bed is comfy, the porch features amazing sunrises and sunsets. Easy to recommend. Note: dirt parking space, like most in area. Motorcyclists bring a puck for you stand, I had one and had zero problems. Cars would have no issues.

Kelly made checking in a breeze and was so easy to communicate with. We stayed over the Thanksgiving holiday and she contacted me after I booked to make sure I understood that the kitchenette is not really equipped for making a Thanksgiving dinner, which was much appreciated! We ate at friends' places and at the nearby restaurants so never really used the kitchenette. Kelly was also responsive during our stay, coming over to give us a lighter on our first night there so we could start a fire in the lovely stone fireplace. We spent our evenings in front of the fire and our days at Joshua Tree national park which is a convenient distance from the rental.

I'm an artist and split my time between LA and Yucca Valley, and am a host in both.
I love Echo Park - I can be so close to the hustle bustle of one of the greatest cities in the US, yet still have hummingbirds on my porch and occasional raccoons or skunks in the yard. I've tried to leave, but always come back!
