Welcome to our home! We live in a big, welcoming historic house in the wonderful neighborhood of West Philadelphia (University City). A short walk to Penn, Drexel and CHOP and HUP, easy access by trolley or bus to downtown, close to great restaurants of all kinds. The bed in your room is comfortable -- two twins that can be separated or kept together to make one big bed. Our house is fun and friendly; your Philadelphia home away from home.

The space

Our house is a big, welcoming historic home in the really fantastic neighborhood of West Philadelphia (University City). The neighborhood is tree-lined and relaxed, a close walk to everything you need or easy access by public transportation to downtown. The house itself is friendly and has a lot of "character" --lots of quirky art on the wall collected in our travels. Your room is on the third floor which, you'll see from the photos, is bright and open...though your room is private and quiet. We're sure you'll feel comfortable here.

Guest access

Your room is a private one on the third floor. You'll be sharing the third floor bathroom with the kids whose bedroom is on the same floor, or with other guests, but we'll make sure to give you your space. You may use the kitchen as you like (coffee in the morning!) and you can use our laundry machines. We have a sound-proof band practice room which you can use while you're here (though talk with us first to make sure there isn't anyone else scheduled to play down there). The rooftop deck has a lovely view of the city.

Interaction with guests

I work at home so I'll be readily available to answer questions. I'll be really happy to give you directions, suggestions and recommendations for restaurants or anywhere you want to go. Always happy to help make your stay pleasant in any way.

Other things to note

Some notes!
-- Happy to make special offers for long term stays. We love guests who stay a while.
-- Parking is free on the street. Some blocks have two hour restrictions, some blocks have no restrictions at all. Weekends most of the blocks have no restrictions. Most guests haven't had a problem finding the right spot.
-- The bed in your room is comfortable but note that it's two twin beds together. You can separate them if you want, or keep them together for a great big bed. [NOTE: I'll be out of town for most of the summer, collaborating with both my wife and a wonderful local co-host make everything great. Because of the fact that separating the twins and putting them back together to form one big bed is a bit of a pain, I'm going to be kind to my wife and the co-host and ask that if you book from June 14-July 16, or from July 30-August 22nd, you go with the "one big bed" option. That makes for a king-sized bed that's definitely big enough for two.]
-- We keep our house well, but it is 100 years old and is not a bland, generic box. Interesting art on the walls, friendly environment top to bottom...lots of fun to be here.
-- The bedrooms all have window air conditioners, as does the open room on the third floor, so you'll be comfortable in your room in the summer. Like most old West Philly homes there isn't central air.
-- The kids will probably be around while you're staying here. They're great kids, three girls, sometimes playful but they won't pester you.
-- Squirrel is a wonderful family dog -- big and very mellow. She's a very quiet dog, though she may greet you with a couple barks when we all first meet you. After that, not a peep. When we're not in the house we'll keep her behind a gate in the kitchen.
-- I'm a music teacher. On Wednesday and Saturday mornings I teach a music class for families in the living room. You're welcome to walk through and it shouldn't have any bearing on your stay.
-- If you're a musician and want to use the sound-proof band room, great! Ask me about it beforehand to make sure you'll be able to use it the way you want while you're here.

Jay and his family were extremely welcoming and made me feel at home in Philly. What a wonderful family! His place was at a perfect location for my externship at UPenn and there were plenty of incredible food just a few blocks away from his house. I highly recommend this place and would definitely stay with Jay and his family again when I get to come back to Philly!

Jay's place was a great stay during a two week externship at UPenn. Himself and all of his family were so lovely and willing to help at any opportunity, and made me feel right at home in Philly. Definitely recommend this place, particularly for any UPenn or Drexel students!

Jay and his family were incredibly friendly and so helpful when suggesting attractions and anything else local to the area. The room was great, very spacious and the house is in a good location. I would definitely stay again when back in Philly.

Felt very welcome. Accommodation as described and the neighbourhood was clean and quiet with places to eat three blocks away. Takes about 15 to 20 mins to walk briskly to upper quad entrance to U Penn.

The house is amazing and the location is phenomenal! They've obviously done a fabulous job of reviving this beautiful gem of a house. The only thing that was not optimal - for me anyway, may not be a problem for others - was that the bed is extremely soft. (It looks like it's kind of a combo day/trundle bed with canvas & spring supports under the mattresses so just not as much support as I need.) Jay and his family were very kind, Squirrel the dog was easy-going, the neighborhood information they provided was superb, and we loved the view from the roof top!
