One of five artist-made guest rooms in a recently renovated 1902-built hostel/B&B near Hawthorne, Belmont, Division & Downtown. Walking distance to variety of restaurants, bars, theaters, shops, grocery stores, parks & public transit. Memory-foam queen bed with overhanging hammock. Kitchen, dining room & living room access.
With an aesthetic created in part from salvaged strips of lumber from a small wood mill down the street, Mill Room was designed by me, Evan Cael, "Inn Keeper" at 1234 House. Sway on the canvas hammock hanging over a queen-size memory-foam bed. A couch and table also provide a place to relax.
Mill Room is one of five guest rooms at 1234 House designed by a local artist. The house, built in 1902, was recently renovated from the ground up, with an eye toward art, community and providing a unique space for travelers to call home while visiting Portland.
Just down the hall is a shared bathroom with clawfoot tub and tile mosaic wrapping the walls. A second shared bathroom on the main floor has a shower. Make use of the washer/dryer on the second floor. Relax on a giant chaise lounge in the living room or play a song on the red piano. Take a break from the restaurant crowds and make a meal in the kitchen. Sit at the 11-foot Doug-Fir-slab dining table.

I live here. I'm Evan, 36, a native Portlander. I'm happy to chat or provide tips about the city. Also happy to go about my routine with little obtrusion.
Other things to note
There is no off-street parking here. We live on a corner, so there is typically plenty of curbside parking in front of the house. A local church has a 40-spot parking lot across the street they make available to the public everyday but Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday.
If you arrive before our 2 p.m. check-in, or when departing your travel plans are later than our 11 a.m. check-out, you're welcome to leave your luggage at the house where they'll be safe and head out on an outing, or you're more than welcome to hang out in the common areas of the house (kitchen, dining room, living room, front outdoor patio). Just leave your bags in the living room on the window seat.
General respect and kindness is a good place to start.
•Check-in: After 2 p.m.; Check-out: Before 11 a.m.
•No smoking tobacco in the house
•No illegal activities
• Quiet hours range between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m. everyday, which basically means don't make excessive noise during those times.
• No pets
•Outside patios and balconies must be maintained as quiet zones, with normal conversational levels, especially after 10 p.m.

My name is Evan. I'm a native Portlander who has lived, worked and traveled elsewhere but now feel fortunate to be living in my beautiful home town. I recently spent two years leading the complete renovation of this 1902-built house, and very much learning how to do it on the job. I enjoy playing music and going to local live shows, chatting on porches and taking walks in the neighborhood. I used to be a journalist and lived/worked as a writer in Lima, Peru several years ago. Now, running 1234 House is my primary focus.
