Description

The space

Come enjoy the numerous hummingbirds and learn about how coffee is grown! We run a shade-grown coffee farm that has a lot of nature too! We have 20 hummingbird feeders and you will have private access to over 500 hummingbirds of at least 15 species! The birds are very tame and come very close to you if you stand quietly on the balcony. The photo opportunities are endless, especially because of the diversity of natural backgrounds! We also place out bananas and other fruits to attract tanagers and other tropical birds.

Guest access

We have 4 bedrooms available and each bed comes with a mosquito net in case you are particularly tasty. On the 2nd floor, with the wrap around balcony, there are two bedrooms each one with a full bed, and a shared bathroom. On the 1st floor there are 2 bedrooms, one with a full bed, and another one with 2 single beds, plus a shared bathroom. The bathroom showers are the only places with hot water.
Guests are welcome to use the kitchen, washing machine (cold water only), and living rooms (with dinner tables and couches) on both the 1st and 2nd floors.
Most inviting is to wander the gardens, enjoy the treetop view from the balconies, or relax in the hammocks!

Interaction with guests

Alejandro and I split our time between Bogota and this farm, so you might get to chat science and hummingbirds with us!
Lucero and Mary (family of farm caretakers who live in a house down the hill) are always available to deal with any needs (Spanish only). We are happy to provide meals (3 meals per day for COP $60,000) since it's hard to get back and forth from Fusa (20 mins away) with groceries. Parmenio would be happy to teach you about growing and processing coffee (in spanish)! And Liseth (7 years old) will be happy to be your local tour guide!

The neighbourhood

Vereda Tierra Negra is a valley of coffee and dairy farms, interspersed with patches of forest. Come experience the rural life in Colombia! Your coffee, eggs, milk, fruits, veggies and more have only traveled 50m from farm to table!
We are located down the valley towards the end of a dead-end road (almost no traffic), on a steep hillside (gorgeous view). Our neighbor Don Cesar (across the stream) runs a small store that sells the basics (beer, soda, milk, snacks, etc.) and where people also socialize. We also sell (to go) coffee and eggs fresh from our farm.

Getting around

We are located between Sibate and Fusagasuga, along the old San Miguel highway. If driving, you should arrive in a 4 wheel drive vehicle to go down the hill. There is parking at the top of the hill if you want to leave your vehicle and walk (we could also find someone to drive you if you need it). You can also take a local bus from Sibate (40 min) or Fusa (10 min) and walk ~20 min downhill (steep dirt and paved road) to our farm.
If you are coming with lots of luggage or don't want to walk, our neighbor Don Cesar will pick you up for $10 USD.

Other things to note

We have 2 small dogs (Schnauzer mixes) who "rule" the finca and will keep you company (outside only). Down the hill, the family who takes care of the farm and runs the coffee crop has 2 dogs on dog runs (1 is not friendly), a cat, chickens and ducks (there are two small ponds)!
Rural life starts early and with sunrise (~5:30am) comes roosters calling, hummingbirds fighting, birds singing and dogs barking!

House Rules
Check in is anytime after 1PM

Please no pets (we have enough farm dogs), or smoking near the house or the feeders.
This is a family neighborhood, so we ask that there be no rowdy, noisy behavior.
We take great care of our gardens and wildlife and ask that you respect them and avoid any disruptive behaviors (no littering, hurting plants, harassing birds, etc.).

Kristiina was an amazing host. She was very responsive to all of questions and requests weeks before our arrival. Once we arrived we were welcomed like family. The farm is a truly unique place. It is surrounded by hundreds of beautiful hummingbirds that fly and feed just inches from you. It's a magical experience not to be missed. Don't let the remoteness fool you, it's off the beaten bath but the house has everything you need. The views from the home of the surrounding countryside are amazing. This is a working coffee farm. We were treated to a full coffee tour and participated in all of the steps from picking the beans to processing and finally roasting and of course tasting all the coffee we wanted. Lorenzo led the tour and he is an amazing man with lots of knowledge. We left with a sample of the coffee we helped process and roast. The family that runs the farm and tour are super friendly and they make you feel at home right away. If you want to experience a true working farm and the magic of the beautiful hummingbirds do not miss this experience you will not regret it.

Had an absolutely lovely stay with kristiina, Alehandro and family. Well worth the trip. Loved exploring their farm and seeing all the hummingbirds. They couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful. Perfect place to go from Bogota and really good opportunity to see Colombia in a different light. Would highly recommend the trip and we hope to return.. Perhaps with better Spanish

Went here with three friends and had an amazing time. Sort of confusing directions but if you just get a ride from Lorenzo at the top of the hill you shouldn't have any issues! It was during holiday so a few family members were there and we absolutely loved meeting them. Alejandro's parents who live there were also very sweet and gave us a tour of the farm, coffee and even a drink. Lucero cooked us amazing food that was delicious. Beautiful home, beautiful family, beautiful farm. We highly recommend it!!

Kristiina coordinated our trip from abroad and did a fantastic job of being available for questions and sharing details to help us find our way to the house. She also communicated with the family living on the farm to arrange for cooked meals (delicious and prepared with pride) and a tour of the coffee farm. My two year old especially enjoyed the many outdoor spaces. The loose dogs on the site were friendly and stayed out of the house. The highlight was enjoying the outdoor spaces alive with hummingbirds, flora and views.
