Private lower area of 1883 home. Included in space are a kitchenette, fireplace and bathroom with shower. Overlooks formal garden with spectacular views of the Hudson River. Outdoor sitting area. Two wonderful restaurants in close proximity.

The space

A spectacular location well situated in the midst of the Hudson Valley offering an ideal base from which to explore this scenic region. The space offered is part of the lower floor of a beautiful 1883 home that sits on approximately 14 acres. The location lies adjacent to where the naturalist John Burroughs once made his home and did much of his writing. Hike the trails of Slabsides, Burroughs cabin retreat a bit down the road or enjoy locally sourced restaurants The Global Pallet and Stonehedge, both in close proximity. Otherwise one can just enjoy the natural beauty of the region gazing from the property across the river at the Vanderbilt Mansion, in Hyde Park, also home to the Culinary Institute of America, or by watching the numerous boats that float along the Hudson. The region also is known for its vibrant art scene and Kingston's popular Roundout area for galleries, antiques and great places to dine is under 15 minutes away. Beacon is about 40 minutes from the house. During winter enjoy the day cross country or downhill skiing. Mohonk Mountain House (10 miles), Hunter Mountain (1 hour) and the Catskills are in the vicinity.
Enjoy apple or pumpkin picking in the fall, skiing and snowshoeing in the winter, a summer boat tour or antiquing and gallery hopping all year round. There are a number of grand estates including the Vanderbilt Mansion which are available for public touring. There are a number of sumptuous farmers markets in summer and fall in the area.

Guest access

You may access the space through the entrance at the front door of the house or via a private entrance at the back of the home. The front entrance requires that you go down a set of stairs to the space. There is also a private entrance from the back to the space. There is a beautiful garden and large property that guests will enjoy exploring!

Interaction with guests

Someone will be there to greet them and may be there throughout the stay however a contact number and email will also be provided.

Other things to note

Please note that the shower is approximately slightly lower than standard. As the area is fairly rural a flashlight is advised.

Fabulous real rustic feel and decor. Perfect for the area and type of home. Beautiful view of the Hudson and ideally located. Close Drive to Poughkeepsie, Slabsides John Burroughs sanctuary; wineries; New Paltz :Walking railroad bridge across the Hudson Plan your trip so much to see and do! Again ideal location. Gorgeous Sunrise!! Road 9W close but didn't really bother us as early morning on weekends no noise and same for evening.

Lorie was a wonderful host! Her home is comfortable, old and full of character. The expansive garden rolls all the way down to the banks of the Hudson. You will very much enjoy your stay here as we did.

Lori, Meet us when we arrived, a bit after we had originally expected and showed us our room. After we got familiar with the light switches, doors, kitchenette, etc. we were on our own. She kindly provided a gluten free breakfast for my husband and told us how to walk down to the edge of the Hudson....when it stopped raining. Cozy, quite and restful spot for our overnight as wedding guests for an event nearby.

Lorie was very welcoming. We had just visited Val-kill and it was great to be staying in an older house that night - felt like we were still in an earlier era. We also enjoyed being able to walk down to the river in the morning. I second the recommendation to bring a flashlight. There was a little road noise even from the basement but it didn't disturb my sleep.

Lorie and her family have a place that is truly out of storybooks. If you love arts and crafts architecture, history, and fabulous natural surroundings this is a must visit place! Patio and formal garden overlooking the Hudson River was gorgeous at dusk while lounging with a glass of wine and candles. Hosts are gregarious and generous and went out of their way to make sure our three-night stay was truly memorable! Marvelous country French style restaurant across the street and a short distance from the Culinary Institute of America, Mohonk, and New Paltz. What a treat!

We had a lovely weekend in West Park! The home and the grounds are absolutely beautiful. Our apartment has exactly what we needed (kitchen, deck), and the view of the Hudson was amazing! Carola (our host) was very friendly and helpful. Thanks again!
