Sovalye Island is located about 15 minutes from the coast and the town of Fethiye, and is entirely pedestrian. Its paths are lined with bougainvillea, pine and lemon trees and with no roads or traffic, the island is a dream destination for a quiet and pleasant holiday. The island is very small, a walk from one end of the island to the other is 45 minutes or so, along a coastline dotted with ancient ruins, coves and sandy gravel. In fact it is so small that it does not show up on most internet maps, but you can find it on (website hidden) Earth. Previous generations did not have trouble finding it however, and it seems that some of the first inhabitants of the island were ancient Romans, as you can easily see the remains of settlements dating from the late Roman period in the crystal clear waters; old olive oil jars, amphorae, a Roman cistern. The island, according to mythology, was first named by the Knights Templar, Sovalye being an extraction of the French word for Knights- Chevalier, and The Knights Templar's great rivals, the Knights of St. John were also active on the island. The remains of a crusader castle they built can still be found. Legend has it that Sovalye was also a base in the Middle Ages for rogue Knights who had become pirates. The island's restaurant is 5-10 minutes walk away.
Transportation between the island and the town of Fethiye is through a water taxi service running every an hour, Private sea taxi service is also available 24 hours a day for the short 10-15 minute ride.
Private sea taxi 10€ for all
Sea taxi service 1.5€ per person
