Self-catering 1850s blackhouse set in the North Harris hills. Lovely remote area close to Loch Seaforth on a working croft with hens at your door and eagles in the sky! Kitchen/sitting room, one double bedroom and shower room. All linen, towels, electricity and gas for cooking is provided. Eggs from the hens will be in the cottage for you and more can be bought if wanted. Peace and quiet plus walking tracks out the hills from the door.

The space
An ideal self-catering getaway to relax and enjoy the islands of Lewis and Harris. All amenities are at the cottage except WiFi but there is limited Vodafone access. Being a traditional, original Blackhouse type building, the accommodation is compact and can only sleep two people in the double bedroom. Heating at present is by electric heaters and a log-effect electric fire.

Guest access
You have access to the garden, laundry and boot room for storing cycles, etc. There is a short, easy walk to the shore of Loch Seaforth where mussels can be gathered or, if you are very quiet and very lucky, the chance to see an otter.

Other things to note
This is strictly a self-catering property and guests should make sure they purchase their provisions from either Tarbert or Stornoway as there are no shops near by. Also please remember there are no shops open on a Sunday on the island. Fresh eggs will be provided on your arrival and more can be purchased from us if wanted. We also have our own heather-fed mutton available if you would like to try a deliciously different taste. Dogs are welcome as long as they are kept under control at all times.

The hills in this area are known as the most likely place you will see Golden Eagles and Sea Eagles. Indeed, during the summer months, the RSPB in conjunction with the North Harris Trust, conduct an Eagle Walk every Wednesday morning from the car park at Bowglass.
If you do not want to cook your own meal, the Loch Erisort Inn, 10 miles north from Bowglass, has excellent home-cooked food including local seafood. The shores of Loch Seaforth are just a walk away across the fields where mussels can be picked from the rocks at low tide.

I live on the Isle of Harris, Scotland, am English but married to an islanders who is a shepherd on the Harris hills. During the summer months we provide self-catering accommodation in the old family home here on Harris.
During your stay
I live just in the next village about half a mile away and visit the property every day, morning and evening, to feed the hens. Either myself or my husband, Angus, are always ready to help if needed. My mobile number is 07470086749. The cottage will be left unlocked ready for your occupation on your day of arrival so please just make yourselves at home and I will see you later.
At certain times of the year, usually July and September, guests are welcome to take part in the sheep gatherings, walking with the shepherds and watching the dogs working.
