Ever want to sleep on an island? You can on Chebeague Island by Portland. Bike ride around the island, walk between Big and Little Chebeague at low tide. Find out island life in a 1905 Maine cottage. Note 2 rooms sleep 2 each, 1 room sleeps 1. Best way to contact me June through Sept. is through messaging on Airbnb. This is an island, and the phone is not always good.

The space

The cottage used to be a boathouse by the shore around 1905. It was hauled up the hill to become a cottage. Downstairs was changed as pictures show. Upstairs is the original classic 1905 Maine cottage original rustic wood. Just the windows have been replaced and bathroom has newer fixtures. There are spiral stairs up to the second floor. Please make sure you are comfortable with spiral stairs. Will add more pictures when the site lets me.

Guest access

Guests will have access to the kitchen (refrigerator, stove, mcrowave and coffee maker), dining, living areas and deck. There are 3 bikes. I will provide a map of the island showing beaches and interesting places.

Interaction with guests

Internet is accessible at the cottage, but perhaps not all phones. Be sure to ask if you need help. There are also places you can go to if your phone internet doesn't work at the cottage. You can have all the privacy you want, but be sure to ask if you need help.

Other things to note

If you are a coffee drinker (I'm not), please bring your coffee! I have a coffee maker. The Niblic does have great coffee. We do have a fun outdoor shower for after the beach!

Joan met us at the ferry and immediately made us feel at home. We found the accommodation just as described - a quite remarkable historic building with lots of character and a tastefully renovated ground floor. Joan unexpectedly loaned us 2 bikes to explore the island, which we thoroughly enjoyed being able to do and by prior arrangement (at her suggestion) had arranged for fresh lobster to be delivered for our evening meal which she cooked for us. A real Maine experience. Joan is a wonderful host and made our 24 hour stay on the island a throughly memorable one.

Exploring Chebeague Island was going to be a quaint little adventure for us, off the beaten path for an end of summer journey. While we certainly expected to enjoy the island, what we didn't anticipate was how much we would enjoy staying with Joan. Her home is immaculate and classic Maine. Joan gave us our space to enjoy as we wanted, but she allowed us to pick her brain on both the historical and contemporary of the island. Most of this conversation took place on her patio which has stunning views, a gentle breeze and nicely kissed by the sun where we could have spent our entire visit. Traveling to the island on the ferry, we packed light and brought our bicycles. Fortunately, we had enough room on the return trip to pack fond memories and the souvenir of a new friendship.

Response from Joan:
You both were a lot of fun to have. And good sports about bicycling the island. Keep up the cycling! I will treasure the medallion.

Joan's house is a great setup for a small family who would like to get a taste of a very sweet and friendly Maine Island community. Her house is cozy, and the guest rooms are sweetly decorated. Her location on Chebegue worked well for me-I was in for a wedding. She is very close to the amazing, timeless boat yard and one of the few eateries on the island. I did not spend much time at the house except to sleep and eat her nice, modest breakfasts. I brought a fair amount of food and Joan graciously cleared off a whole shelf for me.

I love Chebeague Island. It's walkable and friendly. I enjoy rowing in my dinghy, sailing and croquet. I go back to CO for the winter. I'm lucky to enjoy majestic mountains and the ocean.
