Affordable lodging on the East side of the Big Island in Hawaii. 27 miles from the Hilo Airport. This cabin has a screened in sleeping area upstairs with a Queen bed. Downstairs is an open air full kitchen and an outdoor shower and composting toilet.
This is a great space to relax and unwind. No TV or internet to distract you. This part of Hawaii is lush and tropical. The ocean is one mile down a lovely old growth mango lined single lane. There is a beach park and a popular local surfing area.
The cabin is located on our five acre gated farm. It is located at the back of the property away from the two other homes on the property. You will have your own private bath and kitchen and are surrounded by a citrus orchard.
Interaction with guests
My husband and I and our son, his wife and two children live on the property. We generally like to give our guests complete privacy, but we are more than happy to help in any way we can at your request.
Other things to note
This is a very quiet, peaceful, rural environment. There is very little night life.
There is a large thermally heated rock pool by the ocean within 1.5 miles which is nice to swim and soak in. We are about 25 miles from Volcano National Park.
No smoking or pets
Checkin before 8pm
Must be comfortable peeing outside and using a composting toilet.
Must be mindful of electricity use. (off grid)

Tom and I moved to Hawaii 5 years ago after we retired. We have a 5 acre property and with family are slowly creating a small farm, growing a variety of citrus, avocados, pineapple, bananas as well as a variety of tropical fruits. We also raise chickens. All the dwellings on the property are totally off grid using solar energy and rainwater harvesting. Our vision is to create an off grid homestead and farm using organic growing methods and decreasing our carbon footprint. Our goal is to curb our personal impact on climate change and global warming, even if it is only in a very small way. As environmental activist, Bill McKibben, says "The problem with climate change is that it's very large, and as individuals we seem quite small against it, so it's easy for people to feel disempowered." We hope that in some small way, people who stay in our cabin, will feel empowered to make their own small changes. This can be as basic as a shift in thinking from mindless energy use to "mindful" energy usage, like turning out unneeded lights. We believe that millions of small changes can create big results
There is something magical about the sun providing your energy, the rain your water, and feeding the trees with your organic wastes.. We enjoy living simply and in harmony with the earth. We love interacting with people and enjoy the diversity it brings to our lives.
