Spicy Villas was the highlight of our trip to Thailand! It is hard to put into words the beauty, sense of community and hospitality of the place. However, it is not a place for everyone. The amenities are basic (cold showers, no cleaning service, wet bathroom tiles etc) but if you are willing to tough it out - you will be rewarded with an amazing experience. You get out as much from your experience as you put in - so ask questions and be willing to try everything. Samart was extremely responsive and made the booking process very easy. We booked all our activities through him and he put an itinerary together for us that fitted all our desired activities into our stay that did not leave us exhausted. We did jungle trekking, visited a waterfall, bathed an elephant, visited a Karen village + school, cycled, did bamboo rafting and had a cooking class within 3.5 days there. Altogether it was decently priced. If you did your research, you could probably do those activities in that area for a cheaper price but we believed the price was worth it for the convenience. You are assigned a guide upon your arrival. A huge shout out to all the amazing guides we met, but especially so to Boon who took such good care of us. The highlight during our stay was having dinner with the volunteers and guides. We had so much fun helping out in the kitchen, plus the banter and laughter was contagious. Paying guests eat separately from guides and volunteers. The staff will respect your privacy as they understand some guests escape to Spicy Villas to enjoy the peace of the mountains. However, if you want to make the most of your experience, we recommend asking your guide if you can eat dinner with all the volunteers and guides. It is so much fun and they are such lovely people. Who you spend your time with at Spicy Villas is luck of the draw, but we met an amazing Swiss and Australian family during our stay. Wishing them safe travels! Overall, we had an amazing stay and highly recommend it to everyone. We love Spicy Villas so much we are thinking of returning to volunteer. If you need a detox from the real world - this is the place. Thank you Samart and the team! P.S. The mountains do get cold at night, so bring along a few warm clothes for your trip!

I think this place is severely overpriced. It's a great experience but nothing was too well organized. Understand you get no choice of meals. The classes and tours you also get no choice in what you make. It's a very unique experience and the food is great and the guide Daro was amazing. But understand that you're staying in the jungle with open floors in a shack with probably no hot water and tons of insects I just don't know how the cost is justified and how they can even fail to provide soap and toilet paper. I don't know why I was charged a cleaning fee when there was mud on my bed and the sheets weren't clean and the mosquito net had holes and there were I old cobwebs and wasp nests inside the room.

Response from Samart (Joe):
Thank you for staying with us and we're so happy to hear that you had a unique experience and enjoyed your food and were happy with your guide Daro. Thank you for pointing out that our accommodations are basic we do write this in our listing and also provide accurate pictures but it's always good to mention it so that our guests know that stay at Spicy Villa is not for everyone. You do stay in a jungle and there are bugs and insects and our bungalows mimic simple tribal lodging. So this is only for those who wish to experience this kind of life not for guests who are looking for a more refined accommodation. We cook local meals with several dishes for our guests. The dishes are at your guide's discretion but if you have any special wishes, your guides will listen to you. If they know the recipe of course. This is another great point for our future guests. Please tell your guide about any special wishes for your meals. We do not have a menu or an option to order dishes as this is not how we operate. We serve meals as hosts would serve them to their guests. If there's no toilet paper in the toilet, please let us know and we will provide it. We do not provide soap however. We never charge a cleaning fee for our guests and if this happened, we will provide a refund. All rooms have to be clean for our guests and you should complain if that's not the case. We will provide another room. A part of our income goes to our community projects so that's also included in the price of your stay. Thank you for reviewing and pointing out what you were not happy with. We appreciate it a lot and take your comments seriously.

Spicy Villa was such a special retreat! Though only a couple hours outside Chiang Mai, it felt like a world away, with its views of rice terraces, jungle, and elephants (and with the easy ability to either have guided experiences with those, or to just curl up with a book and look at them). It was also a wonderful combination of welcoming people, from the generous local staff to volunteers to fellow weekenders. Samart was also incredibly communicative, thorough, and helpful, even with our last-minute request - we're extra grateful to him and he clearly puts the same thought into the place he's built. All in all, Spicy Villa was exactly the retreat we needed, and we hope to go again!

Everything you could want in an escape from the busy world. The beautiful back drop and cozy, colorful bungalows were perfect environment to unwind and appreciate your surroundings. The itinerary constructed by the staff gives you a taste of everything from trekking, floating on the river, to elephant rides and baths. It's unforgettable. BEST THAI FOOD YOU WILL EVER HAVE..seriously.

Spicy villa was a great experience! Very chilled atmosphere with plenty of activities. Very good way to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Bear in mind, it is remote so no wifi. At the accommodation is nothing fancy but does the job. Sam was our guide and he was excellent. Very knowledgeable about the everything. The cooking classes were awesome and the food is excellent. You get fed very very well. We Will be back!!

The Spicy Villa is simply amazing! The bungalows are simple, yet they have everything you need; a bed, electricity, hot shower, and toilet. Samart organized a great itinerary for me, and my private guide took me through the jungle to visit waterfalls, eat with the local tribes, and similar things. Each morning for breakfast, and each evening for dinner, everyone, both guests and staff, cook and eat together in the common area like a big happy family. The Spicy Villa is an amazing place to come and relax at if you want to get out of the city for a while. My only regret is not staying longer!

Grew up in the countryside, lived in Buddhist temple for 8 years as a novice monk then I went to university where I graduated in tourism management in 2002.

Along with my eco-lodges, I also operate an Eco-Tourism company, where I organize custom small and private group tours for outdoor activities off the beaten tracks, real village visits, local waterfalsl, bare back elephant riding, cooking by using bamboo in the jungle, healthy cycling and more. Ask for details!

I like outdoor activities such as trekking, hiking, cycling and off roading. I am very involved in local community projects and run an English teaching volunteer project as well for ethnic minority school kids.
